"The threat comes from Russia and Turkey": Sweden fears a new war in Europe
Populism of the media and political leaders, deeply mixed with national and religious contradictions, can cause a major European war. All this has already happened, but alas, story does not teach people anything
This topic was raised by Gustav Reinfeld, author of an article in the Swedish newspaper Dagens Industri.
Sweden fears a new war in Europe. Reinfeld calls the current situation "the perfect storm", which can lead to the most dire consequences.
From his point of view, first of all, the war could be unleashed by the head of the Russian state Vladimir Putin or the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whom the author considers authoritarian leaders who are trying to change the European borders.
- Reinfeld quotes the former head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry Karl Bildt.
He believes that the so-called old Europe, realizing the danger of a redistribution of borders, created the European Union, which actually abolished the borders between states. According to the author, this allowed the EU countries to protect themselves from the danger of a new war.
Therefore, Reinfeld believes, the threat to Europe comes from Russia and Turkey, which are not part of this interstate association. And although Sweden is on the periphery, in the event of a major conflict, there is a risk for it too. This statement came against the backdrop of numerous exclamations from Stockholm that Russia is allegedly the main threat to the Swedish kingdom. To fuel the idea of the threat, Sweden is either looking for a mysterious Russian submarine in its territorial waters, spending tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds, or declaring the need to restore the country's previously closed naval bases on the islands.
