"Alarming trend for NATO": new Iranian modernization of the T-72 tank

21

The Iraqi People's Mobilization Force (PMF), backed by Iran and operating separately from the country's military, has demonstrated its combat potential. On June 26, at the base in Ashraf, PMF troops, numbering up to 150 thousand soldiers, held a military parade, showing their equipment.

As noted in the 21AAR edition, more than two dozen, in particular, took part in the celebrations. tanks... Among them were 9 T-72s, which have undergone significant modernization; seven of them were equipped with a new set of armor, and two are identified as T-72S, operated by the regular army of Iran and the IRGC.

T-72S were acquired by Tehran in the 1990s to replenish the dwindling fleet of British and American tanks. The newer T-72s, which took part in the parade on June 26, deserve special attention. In appearance, they are closer to the Serbian modifications of the T-72 - MBT M-84AS1 / AS2, being also similar to the Czech model T-72 "Scarab".

The Soviet T-72s are some of the most battle-tested tanks in the world, but they are notorious for their vulnerable carousel magazine mounted under the automatic loader for the 125mm 2A46M gun. When the lower half of the hull or the flanks of the turret is penetrated by high-explosive shells, this often leads to detonation of the ammunition stored in the store and the destruction of the tank.

- indicated in 21AAR.

The seven upgraded T-72s, delivered by Iran to PMF, have towers of large size and are surrounded by composite panels, which, according to the author, "doubles the thickness of their armor", while the rear of the turret was covered with grilles. Composite armor panels have also been added under the turret and above the Glacis [sloped front hull]. The tracks of the tanks are partially covered with new rubber side skirts, held together by rows of armor panels, and rectangular sheets suspended on either side of the engine compartment. The external fuel tanks, located at the rear of the hull, also have a different shape.

Exporting upgraded T-72s along with other Iranian weapons systems to Tehran's proxies such as PMF is an alarming trend for NATO as they could then be transferred elsewhere, such as Syria to fight against the United States or Turkey.

    Well, all NATO tensed Iranians put grills on the tank request ... The headline in the article is directly on a nuclear bomb, but the meaning was only enough for the grates.

      You have not read the article carefully. This is a different army in Iraq, it has different goals and objectives. This is especially true, given the possible withdrawal of P_ndo troops from Iraq ...

        And what kind of panels? Written composite, i.e. just extra thickness, no DZ. Well, this is not very important for modern joint ventures, RPGs, for example, are not relevant. Then, along the entire perimeter, they sewed up slat-armor, or something. In the manner of the Canadian Leo A-6.

        The presence of US and NATO troops in Iraq (formerly Turkey), i.e. in the west of Iran and Afghanistan (formerly Pakistan), i.e. in the east of Iran, coupled with the naval group and Qatar in the south, with the constant presence of the AUG, surrounded Iran. In the north, it is more difficult, there is conditionally neutral Turkmenistan, the Caspian Sea dominated by Russia and the Transcaucasus, where in Georgia, and now in Armenia, the West has failed to gain a foothold. Those. here Rimland's "anaconda's noose" especially strained his grip (here it was torn as a result) in general, the soul of the Heartland, most of which is Russia and it is here that the Heartland acts and it is territorially Iran. You can laugh, but the doctrines of Mackinder and Speakman determined the policy of Britain and the United States, and after WWII, the West as a whole. Let me remind you that according to British Mackinder, who owns the Heartland, he dominates the planet. And the British did everything to capture the Heartland, using WWII, and WWII. Those. revolutions against the background of WWI destroyed the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, Chinese and of course the Russian (where there was a direct attempt at occupation under the name of intervention). In particular, Kolchak was a British puppet, Poland was under a protectorate, Basmachi, etc. But ... everything went to pieces, and then the Reich, fed by the British breast, also managed to bite the owner, but almost ate it. And Hitler followed Heartland's theory unambiguously. As a result of WWII, Great Britain itself collapsed, choking on the Heartland. Then American upstarts appeared, led by Speakman, and developed the Rimland theory, i.e. whoever owns the outer ring around the Heartland owns the planet, such as the "anaconda loop" to strangle the Heartland, because ... and that's all about him. Here we see the encirclement of a chain of American bases, puppet regimes, etc. And then a complete failure, and it was around Iran, the ring could not be closed. First, the Shah of Iran did it. They set Hussein on Iran, and then entered Iraq and Afghanistan. Here is a sleepy Joe withdrew troops from Afgan, now he is withdrawing from Iraq. What we have? We have the collapse of the Rimland theory. And Russia withstood and even Iran withstood (in many respects because of Russia, which did not allow the small ring of a boa constrictor to close, around Iran in the Caucasus, the Caspian Sea and the SA, and of Syria). The anaconda is torn to pieces exactly in the belt from the Middle East to Japan. Just to the trash. Pakistan has kicked up, which is now a greater ally of the PRC, not the West, and is reaching out to Russia. And the Turkish nightmare ... This is the result of the Great Gas War or the Fourth World War. In fact, with the collapse of Rimland, we have the collapse of the US empire. In order for it to maintain its position in the APR, it is necessary to contain China, not to allow China to become an Empire. If not, then the fate of Britain, which became Britain, is simply Britain. The question of the reserve currency and the system of world trade will immediately arise. Also, the United States could not get Jabal naphtha, oil from Iraq and Iran, as well as Venezuela, and a little earlier missed Russian oil. Those. the main commodity of planetary trade. Why do Israeli analysts especially lament about the Taliban, including Kedmi, etc. They lament that the bonds have been lifted from Iran. The military noose was sleeping, which could not be tightened.

        Right! This is the missile defense of the Iranian army of Iraq ... It will make a rustle in the country when the striped-eared ones remove their troops from there.

      They are annoyed not so much by the fact that the Iraqis hung something on the tanks, but rather by the fact that Iran is working closely with the Iraqi people's militia, under the influence of which the Iraqi parliament in January 2020 decided to withdraw the foreign contingent from Iraqi territory, in other words, indicated to the mattresses on Door. The tanks are just additional confirmation of the close contacts between the NM and the IRGC. It turns out that after the Americans leave, Iran will greatly curtail the US's ability to influence the situation both in Iraq and in Syria, where mattresses "guard" the Syrian oil industry and closely mingle with the Kurds, who now have to experience all the delights of the "hegemon" leaving. those. betrayal on the part of the "ally", more soon they will be beaten all together - Iraqis, Turks and Syrians.

    When the flanks of the turret are pierced by a high-explosive fragmentation projectile, not only the store cannot be added, but glasis can also be torn off along with the armor panels.

      I remember in the second Chechen some kind of box by mistake turned the wrong way and got out into an ambush - a hell of a lot of hits, but got out on its own back to its own - 72 or 80 ka? It hurts interesting. I remembered KV then.

        In the Second Chechen, EMNIP, only T-72s participated. Well, the Vovans have the T-62.
        And the survivability of the T-72 with the complete DZ was really very good.
        Tank battalion 506 Guards. MSR 27th Guards mf:
        In two days of fighting in the area of the railway depot, the tank with side No. 611 was hit three times by the Fagot ATGM and six times by RPG-7 grenades.
        The hits occurred in the following parts of the tank.
        ATGM - to the left under the tower (all):
        - two - in the fuel tanks on the fenders under the tower, which during the fighting tankers always kept "dry". The tanks swelled and exploded, then the elements of the mounted explosive reactive armor on the tower worked, there was no armor penetration;
        -one - on board under the tower; it is reflected by the activated element of the mounted dynamic protection mounted on rubber-metal side screens.
        Grenades from RPG-7:
        -one - on top of the commander's hatch of the tower; a cumulative jet pierced the hatch and, without hitting the tank commander, went into the aft wall of the tower;
        -two - to the left in the upper frontal part of the tower; neutralized by triggered elements of mounted dynamic protection;
        -Three - on board the hull, 2 on the left and 1 on the right; all are reflected by dynamic protection elements mounted on rubber-metal side screens.
        As a result, not a single hit led to the loss of combat capability of the tank.

        After successfully completing the task and after receiving a radio command to retreat, tank 623, which had previously rushed forward, began to retreat, not reversing, but turning around. Thus, he put his stern under fire from the enemy.
        Over the next short period of time, the vehicle received 3 hits from RPG-7 anti-tank grenades.
        (...)
        Nevertheless, the tank under its own power with a broken engine crankcase (!), Walked another 300 m at high speed and took refuge on a neighboring street in the location of federal units. There the crew left the car and quickly left it. Tankers reported that oil-fuel fog had begun to accumulate inside the tank and that a fire and explosion could occur. Soon the engine stalled. But nothing caught fire and did not explode. During the day, the engine was replaced, the inlet from the cumulative grenade was brewed, and the tank again went into operation.

        I know that one of the T-72s in Chechnya caught 8 hits from an RPG-7V, but got out of the battle on its own and was repaired by the unit's remrota forces. I don't remember the modification.

    Composite armor panels are cool. It is necessary to give "Oscars" to news or translators. I thought that the composite was needed for the "Chobham" type armor, but I had no idea how a tank could be sheathed with toilets.
