Biden intends to announce the complete withdrawal of US combat units from Iraq
US President Joe Biden intends to make a statement regarding the termination of the US military mission in Iraq. We are talking about combat units, their complete withdrawal. This statement is planned to be made following a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qadimi, who arrived on a visit to Washington.
It is noteworthy that on the eve of his visit to the United States, al-Qadimi noted literally the following:
At the same time, the Iraqi prime minister stressed that official Baghdad does not refuse assistance from American intelligence.
It was noted that intelligence can help the Iraqi military and special services to more effectively resist extremist groups, as well as terrorist cells. Al-Qadimi also pointed out that American military instructors may remain in Iraq to continue training local military personnel.
Biden's readiness to announce the withdrawal of US combat units from Iraq is commented on by experts in the West and the Middle East. In particular, it is indicated that the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq may lead to a strengthening of Iran in the region. In turn, this could play against Israel, which has been trying to hold back Iranian development for many years.
It is worth paying attention to the fact that in 2020 Mustafa al-Qadimi met with the 45th American President Donald Trump. During that meeting, the leaders of the two countries agreed on a phased reduction of the US military presence in Iraqi territory.
It should be added that in recent months, US military bases in Iraq, including the Ain al-Assad base, have been subjected to repeated shelling. At the same time, the direct perpetrators of the shelling were never identified. Washington believes that this is the work of pro-Iranian Shiite armed groups in Iraq.
