The assembly of the third generation "Doomsday aircraft" based on the Il-96-400M has begun in Russia
The assembly of new "Doomsday planes" based on the Il-96-400M has begun at the facilities of the Voronezh Aircraft Plant (VASO). At the moment, we are talking about two new air command posts, but the order of a third is not ruled out.
As the RIA News With reference to a source in the Russian defense industry, Voronezh has already begun assembling the first of the two ordered air command posts. The work is being carried out within the framework of the Link-S project. There is no data on the second plane yet, most likely it will be laid down later, but the third issue has not yet been resolved. It is not ruled out that the Ministry of Defense will nevertheless order another "Yom Kippur aircraft."
At present, Russia is armed with second-generation air command posts based on the Il-80. They are designed to operate in conditions of failure of ground control points, nodes and communication lines, a rapidly changing operational situation, as well as in the case of the enemy's use of nuclear weapons. It is for this reason that planes of this type are called “Doomsday planes”. There are four cars in total in Russia.
In 2019, a decision was made to modernize the existing VKP fleet of the second generation, while work was underway to create the "Doomsday aircraft" of the next, third generation. The aircraft was developed on the basis of the improved IL-96-400 by the Nizhny Novgorod research and production enterprise "Polet", which developed the second generation VKP.
Note that today only the United States and Russia are armed with "Doomsday planes".
