Soviet submarine M-96, missing in 1944, found at the bottom of the Baltic Sea

70

At the bottom of the Baltic Sea, a Soviet submarine M-96 was discovered, which went missing in 1944. The submarine was discovered by a Russian-Estonian expedition.

As a member of the expedition Konstantin Bogdanov said, the "Reconnaissance and Diving Team" and the Estonian search team Maxstar Expedition took part in the search for the submarine. The search took place on July 11-13 in the Narva Bay.

According to available information, the submarine M-96 "Baby" has fought in the Baltic since 1941 and managed to make six successful exits to the sea, mainly performing the functions of reconnaissance off the enemy coast and landing scouts. The submarine set off on its seventh and last voyage on September 7, 1944 and never returned.

According to archival documents, the M-96 was supposed to overcome the Seeigel minefield and conduct reconnaissance in Narva Bay. However, the team did not get in touch in due time. All the past years, the submarine, together with a crew of 22 people under the command of Lieutenant Commander Nikolai Kartashov, was considered missing.

Since it was assumed that the submarine died in the Seeigel (sea urchin) minefields, they were unsuccessfully searched for it in the area for three years. The entire course of the boat from Lavensari Island (Powerful Island) to the end of the Seeigel mine lines located north of Bolshoi Tyuters Island was checked. However, they found a submarine in the Narva Strait, lying at the bottom. Studies have confirmed that this is exactly the M-96.

The submarine lies in the northern part of the Narva Bay, at a depth of 42 meters. Inspection showed that the boat died on the surface, probably during the night charging of the batteries.

- leads RIA News Bodanov's words.

As previously reported, the M-96 was the last unidentified Soviet submarine on the list of missing persons in the territorial waters of modern Russia.

Well, but seriously, they also found the missing (how many there were hundreds of thousands of nameless all the time).) The search must continue until the last soldier is buried .. hi
Now all this is difficult, history is being rewritten and that the most terrible thing is desecrating the graves of Soviet soldiers .. Ah, times and in a nightmare this would not have dreamed before.

Yes, there are "moral" in the power structures, but every year normal people go out in search of the dead. Because this is Our Shared Memory.

No, most likely this place will be declared a "naval burial" with the appropriate legal status (a naval burial is subject to the jurisdiction of the flag state of the sunken ship (vessel) or aircraft, and no state, individual or legal entity is entitled without the consent of the latter to carry out any ship lifting or other underwater work at such an object, except for cases when the sunken object threatens or is a source of pollution of the marine environment, and the former shipowner is removed from work to damp the existing hazard).

From now on, it is not a nameless point. A place of worship, a mass grave - it will be marked on memorial maps.

Well done men, they are doing a great job ... this is a common grave of sailors, now the coordinates will be plotted on nautical charts, and passing ships will be able to pay tribute to them, loved ones will be able to lower a wreath on the grave of their relatives ... Konstantin Bogdanov has been looking for men who are not indifferent for many years and find our boats
If we talk about the Baltic, then in 2012, the Department of the Ministry of Defense for perpetuating the memory of those killed in the defense of the Fatherland gave us the coordinates of the submarine Pravda, discovered during the laying of the Nord Stream, and asked to examine it.

We examined, installed a memorial plaque, held an action in memory, and gave military honors. And then it turned out that there were about 20 submarines not found in the Baltic since the war. So we got over to the cold dark waters of the Gulf of Finland. There is quite a lot of work here: to date we have found 11 or 12 submarines, there are still eight left to find.
low bow to them for this, because it is very important for the relatives of the deceased sailors ...

The nuclear submarine * Kursk * was nevertheless taken out.
And they took it to the shipyard. And, I personally observed her in the PD.
There is even a free photo on the Internet.
It is not known whose. After all, photography / video shooting at sensitive facilities is fiercely prohibited ...
Even a subscription about it is given. request

And how many are not buried in the Smolensko-Kalininsky Svitsky swamps from Ozernoye to Bely. Operation "Thunder", about which they were silent, only fellow countryman Tvardovsky wrote -
        I am killed under Rzhev,
        In an unchanged swamp,
In the fifth company, on the left,
With a brutal raid. I didn't hear the break
I did not see that flash, -
        Like a precipice from a cliff -
And neither the bottom nor the tires.
        And in all this world,
Until the end of his days,
        Neither loops, nor crochets
        From my tunic.

Мы have not yet found ORP "Orzel".

ORP "Orzel" - Project 877E submarine
B-351 = Orzel, transferred to the Polish Navy on June 29, 1986, is still in service, is the "most modern" submarine to date and the only submarine in the possession of the Polish Navy.
      ORP Orzeł (1938)

Look for your own, or from your allies
The M-96 was the last unidentified Soviet submarine on the list of missing persons in the territorial waters of modern Russia.

        Some comments.

There was also the so-called Second "ORZEŁ" - a project 613 submarine (NATO code: Whiskey), built in the USSR, leased since 1962 and acquired in 1965 by the Polish Navy, in which she served from November 29, 1962 to December 31, 1983 ...

The current ORP Orzeł, after various awkward adventures, has not yet fully regained full combat effectiveness. The Polish Navy has two more submarines - ORP "SĘP" and ORP "Bielik", but units almost half a century old have no real combat value.

And yes, we ourselves have to look for the first ORP "ORZEŁ" somewhere in the North Sea - according to the latest data, it is very likely that it was sunk by mistake by an English plane.

This still remains a painful enigma for the Polish Navy - the more I appreciate Russia's effective efforts to find sunken ships. And pay tribute to the fallen!

The submarine lies in the northern part of Narva Bay, at a depth of 42 meters. Inspection showed that the boat had died on the surface, probably during a night charge of the batteries. The engine telegraph on the bridge shows the command "Full Ahead", the rudder is turned to the right, the upper conning tower hatch is open. A mine explosion occurred under the bow of the boat, breaking the hull. According to the Russian historian Miroslav Morozov, based on an analysis of German documents, it can be assumed that the M-96 most likely died on September 10, 1944 at 3:48 am. It was at this time that a German submarine, located in Narva Bay, recorded a mine explosion with its hydroacoustics.

Well, but seriously, they also found the missing (how many there were hundreds of thousands of nameless all the time).) The search must continue until the last soldier is buried ..

Here we are only talking about submariners, the number of submarines was known for sure and this is probably the last of the missing / dead. On land, of course, the picture is completely different, and there the search continues, although this is an extremely dangerous business, recently two from the official search squad were blown up by a shell.
