Walk around Kiev. Triple Senses

151

The station received me, like the rest of the passengers, with noise, summer heat and surging memories.

Something remained, as before, a lot, mainly in small things, has changed. But I will not bore you with descriptions of the architecture and everyday life of the people of Kiev. Today I am interested in the topic of monuments and street renaming.

On the website "Voennoe Obozreniye" periodically there are articles with obscure words "decommunization" and "desovetization". So I wanted to see with my own eyes how it all came down here.

Of course, I could not see all the monuments, but I laid out a route for myself so that at least with one eye I could look at those that were familiar.

Well, let's go?

If you go down from the station down the street "Comintern" ... Stop! There is no such street, it turns out. There is "Simon Petliura". As for me - a very controversial person to name the street after him. I look on the Internet on the go. Whoa! Renamed 173 streets from 1962. That is, every eleventh.

Here you need to do historical retreat: streets, cities and towns have always been renamed. At least for the last century. An example would be Petersburg - Petrograd - Leningrad or Tsaritsyn - Stalingrad - Volgograd. All the republics of the former USSR suffer from this, except for Belarus - not a single city there has been renamed. So theoretically nothing unusual, but the sediment from the streets of "Bandera", "Shukhevych" and "Petliura" was deposited in the soul ...

As a civil engineer, I always believed that the names of boulevards and streets should be neutral - "... I will walk along Abrikosovaya, turn onto Vinogradnaya and on Shadow Street, I will stand in the shade ...". Yuri Antonov is right - that's what you need to call it.

Okay, I went down the Petlyura street, turned left ...

And "Victory Square" has not changed! There is a stele with a gold star on the dome, and on it the letters are gilded - in Russian, by the way.

Here is a photo attached. Hand made.

I turn the other way, go up Shevchenko Boulevard ... Hmm! And the monument to Shchors is worth it!

True, some idiot from the side wrote clumsily "KAT" (executioner in Ukrainian), but there are enough vandals everywhere. Although the utilities could wash it off.

Okay. I get on the tram and go to the military school where I studied thirty years ago. Worth it! True, the "Directorate of the Land Forces" settled there for a long time, but a commemorative plaque is fixed on the facade.

Check this out! Graduates did their best!

Of course, no one allowed me to enter the territory. Then a short walk and ... What is this? A hundred times passed by the monument to Cossior, it looks somehow wrong. I cross the street, come closer. The same bust, but not to a Soviet party leader, but to some UNR colonel! Everything is like Mark Twain. Well, should the pedestal be empty?

Sighing and shaking his head, he made his way to the metro and drove to the center.

Arsenalnaya station, by the way, is the deepest in the world, and its hallmark is a Russian mountain cannon, standing on a high pedestal. The monument was erected in honor of the workers of the Arsenal plant, who had revolted.

Yeah - the gun is in place. It was painted, however, not quite in a natural color, but it was not this that killed me, but the inscription made instead!

Now the inscription says that the monument was erected in honor of the suppression of the uprising at the Arsenal plant by units under the command of the very same Petliura!

Scratching the back of my head - maybe I no longer need to go to the Museum of the Great Patriotic War and the Walk of Fame? Who knows that I will still be waiting there? Well, okay - I'll risk it. Moreover, it's just a stone's throw away.

The Park of Glory remained in its original form. Well, the flags are not the same, but so - everything, as in childhood and adolescence.

And the central alley itself remained the same ...

He came closer to the stele. I was not mistaken - the eternal flame burns.

He stood for a couple of minutes, paused, thinking about those who rest under the granite slabs, and headed through the park towards the museum.

And here a pleasant surprise awaited me! Modern monuments to the three and twice heroes of the Soviet Union! And made so masterfully!

Now past the Pechersk Lavra to the museum. True, now it is called the "Museum of the Second World War". Nothing has changed there either. Cannons at the entrance to the territory ...

There are not many people on the occasion of the working day. Apparently, that is why the ticket office for the open area of equipment was closed. The security guard said the cashier left for a couple of minutes, but after a quarter of an hour I did not wait for her. With a wave of his hand, he took one photo and went the opposite route. Here it is. Why did you do it? To show that it is standing on the Li-2 platform in an authentic color and with stars on its wings.

Before closing the planned route, I made a small detour to show you another monument "Dedicated to military pilots."

Leonid Bykov as Captain Titarenko. With a map in his boot. On board the same treble clef and notes ...

And on the copper plane there is an inscription:

I left Kiev in the evening with threefold feelings. Like this? And like this: to erect and demolish monuments is understandable. To preserve them is even more so. But remodel ...

How wrong Stalin was! I could not calculate all the consequences. It would be better if they left him to the Poles, along with all of Galicia. However, even now it is not too late.

I cannot agree with your generosity - this raguli should have been given to the Poles and other Canadians, and Lvov and Galicia should have been kept for themselves. Our grandfathers fought for them, not Polish ones.

          How wrong Stalin was!

Stalin was not mistaken. The followers of the accepted territory did not manage to clean up, or rather, did not want to. Those who are buried today with military honors by the Kiev shape-shifters were identified and imprisoned in due time. If at the end of the 50s they were not allowed to get together again and in the 80s to raise their heads, there would be no problem of the Ragul seizure of Kiev. Only one claim can be made to Stalin - he, under the guise of "assistants" (Khrushchev and Co.), failed to see the gravediggers of his cause. Unfortunately....

      Andrey Nikolaevich,
I think no. From the first lines, a certain advocacy is read, they say they live like they lived, the monuments have not yet been demolished and there are museums, do not believe Solovyov and Skabeeva, and not clear to the author "decommunization" and "desovetization" is generally a masterpiece (the inscription on the Arsenal cannon is carefully read). I would pay while standing, if instead of photographs that can be viewed on the Internet online, the author would have taken and recorded on the phone a conversation with the military personnel near the school in which he studied, they said I was a Russian from Russia "the country of the aggressor", how do you guys serve ? Or in the Lavra he asked the priests about the tomos, how many parishes they had squeezed out for the new Vira. At worst, in the kitchen with ordinary people of Kiev over a glass of tea, he discussed the law on titular nations and the Russian language, schools, history textbooks, how much better have they started to live since 2013? This would be the truth of life, and not an attempt to whitewash, albeit a small Motherland, but heading towards a real military conflict with Russia.
PS "Leader" we also have relatives living there, they tell what is going on and not all of them are turned off. How can I help them? They consider themselves Russians.

I agree. The author would not hurt to start his essay about Nezalezhnaya from the moment of crossing the border. Obviously, the most acute moments are omitted when independent border guards are trying to find out "For what purpose are you following into the world of democracy?" , and cunning customs officers are unobtrusively interested in the contents of your wallet. And not only...
On the whole, the article gives the impression of a story about a walk through a cemetery. Just quietly, without attracting too much attention from local zealous lads and girls in uniforms, walk along the alleys, make sure that not all the dead were dug up and thrown out of the graves. And to state "It could be worse" ... crying

I would take off my hat and shake hands with the "Leader" if he began his report on May 9 on the Heroes Square among adequate Kievites with portraits of his ancestors and Marshals of Victory, Kovpak, etc. And then he moved to the place of the Bandera march with torches and Nazi slogans and declared his civil position to them, since he lived and served there. And he did it like that of Y. Antonov "I will walk along the apricot, turn onto the grape, and on the thorny street I will stand in the shade, the report is over."
        2. How did you cross the border?
Humanly. Only I do not wish this method to anyone - you show a certified telegram that your father is dead, and "malicious" border guards and customs officers are checking something in computers and humanly speaking so - we condole. And they miss it. And they don't even ask whose Crimea.

            1. Thanks for the kind words. An article on prices and life? Not. I won't. It will not fit into the format. I often comment that in Ukraine not everything is as bad as they paint to us, or as they want, what would it become. They call me for provocations and then minus me.
Well, and so, at first glance ...
It became harder for the people. Here, the coronavirus tried, and the authorities (Ze of those with whom they talked, no one favors. And they swear on Gunpowder, and this. The Ukrainians are not lucky with the "top"), and the war in Donbass.
Food prices are pleasantly pleasing. They are a little cheaper than ours. There is variety. And even "forbidden" for us - from Poland, Germany, Hungary.
Communal is yes. She jumped and, they say, this is not the limit. The passage has risen.
I do not spread the numbers - because I myself am confused about something, but something "flew into the ear and flew out" - the information for me is not very useful.
It became dirtier. Utility workers are either not enough, or they are allocated little funds.
To say that everything disappeared and was closed - I will not say either. For example, I got used to the "grocery store" all my memory. Now I'm driving past - half closed and the sign "rent", and in the second branch of the "new post office" and there really is a queue. By the way, young people often and densely make purchases on the Internet.
And so ... People live. They work, meet, give birth, walk with children.
It is summer now. There are a lot of young people and children. All merry, joyful. Apparently, for them on the plane of Bykov's monument it is written: "We will live" ...

What flared up in Moscow and St. Petersburg - "thanks" to the European Football Championship and the spectators of the visiting teams. And in order to understand the situation in Ukraine deeper, you need to LIVE in it as an average citizen for at least half a year, from November to April. And not to pile up debts on housing and communal services with an average pension (2300-2500 gr) or an average salary (5000-6000 gr). But not according to the calculations of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine (3354 gr of pension and 11579 gr of salary), but in real life. And in general, no capital in the world is an indicator of the well-being of the country as a whole. How many times have Zhukov Avenue been renamed? And the monument to Vatutin or the First Horse, although it is not in Kiev? Where are they? But General Vatutin the liberator of Kiev. How many dogs were velikokry hung on him now? And when the Vologda compatriots were forced to take away the ashes of the Twice Hero of the Soviet Union fighter pilot Alexander Klubov from Lvov? Chechen? But this organization was defeated jointly by the Gestapo and the Security Service of Ukraine. In general, your route, as they said in Mukachevo, is to dash along a dog's circle - two parallel streets - then (1975) Lenin Street and Pobedy Street. The most comfortable, along which residents walked their dogs in the evenings. There are tens of thousands of such renaming throughout all of today's Ukraine. And very far from always the residents were asked for consent to the renaming. In any case, they never asked in the provinces. The renaming of cities and villages is generally a circus on a dart. The village of Novogrodovka in the sub-Ukrainian Donbass was renamed to New York, Dzerzhinsk to Pokrovsk, Dnepropetrovsk to Dnipro, Zhdanov was renamed to Mariupol, Dneprodzerzhinsk, Artemovsk in Donetsk region to Bakhmut. Here's decommunization in real life. Residents pronounce the last name in two versions - BakhmUt or Balamut. Karlo-Liebknechtovsk was renamed Soledar. Locals pronounce it as SoPledar. The name Bakhmut does not take root, the name Soledar does not take root.

he explained everything much earlier in his famous speech at the 10th Congress of the All-Union Communist Party of Belarus in 1921, where, in fact, he confessed to the ART of the created "nations" and the "inevitability" of Ukrainizations (which turned out to be complete nonsense - even his repressions could not completely squeeze the Russians out of the Russians () :

Further, I have a note that we, the communists, are allegedly implanting the Belarusian nationality artificially. This is not true, because there is a Belarusian nation that has its own language, different from Russian, and therefore it is possible to raise the culture of the Belarusian people only in their native language. The same speeches were heard five years ago about Ukraine, about the Ukrainian nation. And recently it was said that the Ukrainian republic and the Ukrainian nation are an invention of the Germans. Meanwhile, it is clear that the Ukrainian nation exists, and the development of its culture is the responsibility of the communists. You can't go against history. It is clear that if in cities Ukraine is still dominated by Russian elements, then over time these cities will inevitably be Ukrainianized. Forty years ago, Riga was a German city, but as cities grow at the expense of villages, and the village is the guardian of nationality, now Riga is a purely Latvian city. Fifty years ago, all the cities of Hungary had a German character; now they are Magyarized. The same will happen with Belarus, in whose cities non-Belarusians still predominate.

1 Letters "I" and "I" - denote different sounds (Y and I). A spelling different from the PRESENT Russian language is associated with the same spelling of many words in the Russian language before 1917 and in the Ukrainian language:
Russian і (and long) in Ukrainian - і (sound and)
Russian and (and short) -> and (sound of s)
      Russian e (open e) -> e (sound e)
Russian yat (closed e) -> i (sound and)

2 Kosior is spelled with one "s" - Stanisław Kosior - one of 4 brothers who were high officials. rank, three of them were shot, one managed to die himself.

It was necessary to enter correctly stylistically and grammatically the translation from the national language into Russian.

That's right, in Russian, "the language of interethnic communication" - Nikita, Nikitovich.

Excuse me, but in terms of the standard of living, the convenience of living, comfort, safety, and the level of infrastructure, these are cities from different centuries.
The simplest example - in recent months I have been reading victorious reports from the Kiev media about how paper tickets on buses will soon be canceled ...
And I don’t remember that Sobyanin would proudly open a new toilet in front of the cameras as something incredible.
Who is there already according to the account the mayor "completing" the metro to Troyeshchina?
And the author's nostalgia for the city of his youth is quite understandable ... it is not clear, however, why this figure of Petliura, destroying Jews, is "controversial" or ambiguous for him (I do not remember), but otherwise everything is clear. But the fact that he kept silent about how dozens of, if not take away, monuments to Soviet soldiers were taken away and thrown into the Kiev Museum of totalitarian regimes, this somewhat reduces the objectivity of the article. But this is the author's vision of the city and it is deliberately subjective and based precisely on personal emotions and impressions. And this is absolutely normal.

1970s Kiev was beautiful. In any season. It is beautiful for its shabby old streets with castles, With sunny Sofia (on the site of the crosses - the sun with rays), with the marble sarcophagus of Yaroslav and the ancient dull frescoes of Yaroslav with his daughters and other historical and religious motives. With green Khreshchatyk and Shevchenko Boulevard, Blooming chestnuts, an ivy-covered circus, next to which, opposite the KIEV Department Store, were the home ticket offices of AEROFLOT and the stop of trolleybus No. 5 to cozy Zhuliany. Lavra was still bombed, Stella was standing. And everything collapsed under Gorbachev. Under him, nationalism flooded out of all the cracks. There was no republic, where the howl would not start: "We feed Moscow, give freedom, let the Party steer. And, recruited in childhood Abwehr agent Mikhail Gorbachev. And his assistant, an agent of the CIA of the Academy of Sciences. Yakovlev began to destroy everything collected by the Narols USSR with difficulty.

How under this article (together with the author) a herd of "sleeping" Ukrainians climbed out. How colorful everything is now in Ukraine according to their fantasies, already horror.

I express my condolences to the author ... it is very difficult ... and this pain never goes away, it only slightly softens from time to time ..
Once upon a time one could just come to Kiev. Now I have no idea how to get there. It seemed to me that Kiev lagged behind Moscow by 10 years in terms of improvement, infrastructure. Even the residents dressed differently). I wonder how it is now.
For me, Kiev was previously an artifact from pre-Mongol history. Sofia .... We climbed the whole Lavra. I managed, I remember, to get to the Scythian gold exhibition. Just amazing and amazingly beautiful things. But not a word in Russian, it was jarring then ... When everyone around everyone speaks Russian, except for announcements of stations in the metro!
They recalculated the prices of our money and felt themselves rich after Moscow).
How old is this feud now? Until Ukraine ceases to consider itself Anti-Russia, and the Russians will not call Ukrainians an artificial people with an invented history and language. Donbass is a separate topic. Too much blood has been spilled there. And Crimea, you ask the Crimeans. As the local taxi driver told me, all the violent and wanting to live in Ukraine, went there. True, then in a quiet way, some of them returned.

Was several times in Kyeve, chestnuts, but Chestnut Alley in König is steeper.
Chicken Kiev in a Borispol restaurant is shit, schnitzel in the summer canteen tastes better.
Fucking taxi drivers, well, you had to get from the railway station to Zhuliany, and in EMNIP 1987 the winter was fierce, they asked for three tariffs.
They arrived, with my height and weight, explained that he was wrong, for some reason he immediately agreed.
