It was decided to involve Hungarian, German and French border guards in protecting the border of Lithuania with Belarus
The European Border and Coastline Agency Frontex will assist Lithuania in patrolling the border with Belarus. This decision was made, as officially announced, in connection with a sharp increase in illegal migration from the Republic of Belarus this year.
Today, July 2, six border guards from Germany, France and Hungary will join the Lithuanian colleagues. Frontex representatives will arrive with their weapons, equipment and equipment. They will serve at the border posts of Kapchamestis and Druskininkai. In general, during July, about 30 employees of the Frontex Permanent Corps are to be seconded to the Belarusian border. Over time, the number of foreign border guards in Lithuania may be increased.
It should be noted that the problem with illegal migration across the Belarusian-Lithuanian border really does exist. In the current year alone, border guards recorded 672 cases of illegal crossing, which is eight times more than in 2020. However, experts believe that the involvement of foreign border guards in the protection of borders with the Republic of Belarus may be associated with preparations for the Russian-Belarusian maneuvers "West-2021", which are planned to be held in the fall.
Let us remind you that Frontex agency started its work in May 2005. This organization is responsible for the coordination of national border services and the security of the external borders of the European Union. In 2016, due to the European migration crisis, the agency's powers were expanded. More than 700 people are serving in the ESSPO.
