US and EU imposed sanctions against the commander of the Belarusian "Alpha" and the companies BelAZ and MAZ
It is reported that the Europeans and Americans have introduced a new package of sanctions against Belarus. It is known that the US Treasury has introduced restrictive measures against the commander of the special forces unit of the KGB RB "Alpha" Sergei Zubkov. Zubkov was included in the list of those Belarusian citizens whose assets in banks connected with the US financial system (and this is practically all banks in North America and Europe) should be “frozen”.
The US administration also added that contacts with Sergei Zubkov and other persons from the sanctions list for US citizens and American companies are prohibited.
In this regard, the question arises: does the US Treasury Department expect to seriously discover foreign accounts at the commander of a special unit of the Belarusian KGB, and also to catch American companies in contacts with him?
Considering that representatives of Belarusian law enforcement agencies, including special services, are prohibited from having accounts in foreign banks and other financial assets outside Belarus, the sanctions look very strange.
However, there is another package of sanctions - already from the European Union - in which a prominent Russian businessman Mikhail Gutseriev turned out to be a defendant. The European list of sanctions includes the largest industrial enterprises of Belarus, including the factories BelAZ, MAZ, Belaeronavigatsia.
Against this background, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the meeting between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin "did not affect the sanctions agenda in any way." According to Psaki, the United States will continue to "defend democratic values around the world." Psaki confirmed Washington's preparations for the introduction of new sanctions against Russia. The reason this time should be the "situation" with Navalny and the commissioning of Nord Stream-2. At the same time, the United States itself calls the actions of the Biden administration illogical: at first, it lifted the sanctions against the operator "SP-2", now it is going to impose sanctions against Russian companies involved in the project. This is despite the fact that most of these companies with Russian jurisdiction have previously come under sanctions.
