"Step to strengthen the Navy": Ukraine intends to buy two British minesweepers

This year, Ukraine intends to buy two British Sandown-class anti-mine minesweepers. President Volodymyr Zelensky arrives in Odessa today to sign the contract on the purchase of warships.
15 Sandown minesweepers entered service with the Royal Navy in the early 90s. Soon, three of these ships were handed over to the military of Saudi Arabia and Estonia. Of the remaining nine minesweepers, two more will soon arrive in Ukraine.
Such a purchase in Kiev was called "a step to strengthen the Navy."
The length of the British minesweeper is 53 meters. It is propelled by two diesel engines, as well as one electric engine - for low-noise movement. The maximum speed of the minesweeper is 13 knots. The ship's armament consists of a 30 mm cannon and machine guns. Despite the fact that it is called a minesweeper, it is not equipped with trawls. The ship searches for and neutralizes mines using special devices that can be controlled remotely.
Last fall, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a memorandum with the British side, according to which London will supply Kiev with the latest weapons, modern equipment, help in launching defense production lines and take part in the construction of facilities for the needs of the Ukrainian Navy.
