"Optimization" of the Marine Corps: the United States decided to stop funding a military base in Honduras
The American press, citing the military command, reports on new plans to "optimize" the Marine Corps (ILC). According to columnist Philip Utley, funding for the rotational deployment of the US ILC Southern Command will end in 2022.
We are talking about the military base of the SPMAGTF command, which was formed in 2014. The base is located in the town of Soto Kano in Honduras. Initially, it was assumed that the US Marines would provide assistance to Latin American states in a number of security areas, including countering drug trafficking. Also, the US Marines trained representatives of the local armed forces.
Based on a budget request, funding for this military base will end from 2022. In the United States, they say that this will save more than $ 3 million a year and redistribute the functionality of the Marine Corps.
Philip Utley notes that these reforms are primarily related to the fact that the US Marines want to re-profile to confront China. Earlier in the American blogosphere there were materials about the possible deployment of US ILC servicemen in Taiwan "in case of Chinese aggression." So far, there is no official confirmation of the upcoming transfer of US ILC fighters to Taiwan.
Earlier in the US Marine Corps decided to abandon the use of tanks... Tank units of the ILC were disbanded, combat vehicles were transferred to other branches of the military.
USMC Lieutenant General David Bellon noted that the Marine Corps "will continue to engage with partners in Latin America in the name of common goals and ideals."
