June 20 - Day of the specialist of the mine and torpedo service of the Russian Navy
A festive day for everyone who serves or has served in the mine and torpedo units of the Russian Navy, appeared in honor of the glorious victory of our sailors in one of the combat operations of the Crimean War. This case is considered the first use of mines by the Russian naval fleetwhich was very successful.
When a joint group of French and British ships invaded the Gulf of Finland to attack Kronstadt and other Russian ports on the Russian Baltic coast, they first encountered minefields. Then the enemy lost four ships. To avoid even greater losses, the squadron had to retire.
This event took place on June 20, so this day became a festive day for miners and torpedo operators, which is reflected in the order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy on July 15, 1996.
A torpedo weapon was first used by the famous Russian naval commander Stepan Makarov. Not far from Batumi, he fired a torpedo at the escort ship "Intibah" of the Turkish Navy, sinking it. This happened during the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878.
The miners and torpedo fighters of the Russian Navy also showed themselves brightly during the First World War and the Great Patriotic War.
In modern conditions, the basis of the coastal defense of our state are mines and torpedoes. In addition, the submarine fleet is equipped with torpedo weapons.
And today, on their professional holiday, servicemen of mine and torpedo units receive sincere congratulations from relatives and colleagues. Voennoe obozreniye joins congratulations.
