Second only to Russia: a wind tunnel is under construction for testing a promising Turkish fighter
The Turkish company is building an experimental infrastructure designed to test models of helicopters and aircraft of its own design, especially promising fighters.
Turkish Aerospace builds Turkey's largest and Europe's second largest subsonic wind tunnel
- stated on the company's website.
The largest object in this category on the territory of Europe is the Russian T-101 installation, on which TsAGI (Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute) conducts experiments. The size of its elliptical nozzle, in which models and prototypes are "blown", is 24 by 14 meters. The dimensions of the analogue being built in Turkey have not been specified, however, judging by the company's statement, they are second only to the Russian "pipe".
Reportedly, the Turkish facility will consist of three test sections: large, small and open, which will be equipped with modern diagnostics of the state of the tested models.
Located in Russia, the T-101 went into operation in 1939. The specialists who worked on it made a huge contribution to the development of domestic aviation during the Great Patriotic War. It was here that the speed and maneuvering characteristics of Soviet aircraft were steadily increasing, allowing them to eventually gain air superiority.
