The Pentagon Downplays Missing Weapons
General Mark Millie, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, said that the real number of casualties weapons much less than the one that was announced in the media.
General Milli stressed that he was shocked by the figures presented in the report. At the same time, he noted that fewer lost weapons appear in the official reports than in the Associated Press article, which was previously reported in material "Military Review".
- emphasized General Milli.
Recall that according to the AP report, at least 1900 firearms were lost or stolen from the warehouses of the army, the Marine Corps, the Air Force and the Navy, even from warships. Among the lost weapons - not only pistols and assault rifles, but also machine guns, grenade launchers, anti-tank systems and even mortars.
According to media reports, some of the lost weapons then surfaced in criminal chronicles as being used in the commission of violent crimes. Also, army weapons were discovered and, apparently, will be discovered for a long time by criminals during investigative and operational actions.
In reality, the loss of weapons can be large
The chief of the chiefs of staff said that he would ask each branch of the military to analyze all lists of weapons in service or in storage, in order to then transmit these numbers in a special report to the US Congress. Milli noted that the Pentagon takes the safety of weapons very seriously and is investigating any cases of missing weapons.
However, it is already clear that the number of lost weapons requires large-scale checks in the armed forces, as well as a revision of the very organization of the system for recording and storing military weapons. It is possible that the servicemen of the American army themselves, who have access to it, can trade in weapons.
Although Milli says that the real numbers of lost weapons are much lower than those voiced by journalists, they are most likely even higher, as stated by American journalists familiar with the situation. They are confident that the Pentagon is downplaying the scale of the loss of weapons. After all, some of the weapons sold on the black market could be disguised as combat losses during the numerous military operations that the United States is conducting around the world - in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and other countries. This issue also requires verification.
On the other hand, Milli himself may not be very worried about his own responsibility, since he has been chairing the Chiefs of Staff Committee since October 1, 2019. True, before he also held command positions in the troops. But, in any case, weapons have been missing for a decade and not only with the current American military leaders.
The problems of thefts and losses of firearms from army depots and in the location of units are quite acute in many armies of the world. But the US Armed Forces position themselves as the strongest and most organized army, and in this case it turned out that in this powerful military machine, weapons control is by no means up to par.
