June 18 - Day of Service of Military Communications of the Armed Forces of Russia

The structure of the Russian Armed Forces has a military communications service (VOSO). Her duties include the preparation of communication lines for military formations and military transport. VOSO servicemen perform the function of representatives of the Russian Ministry of Defense on railway, water and air transport.

The year of foundation of this structure is considered to be 1868. That year, on June 18, the Minister of War of the Russian Empire Dmitry Milyutin, by his order, created a committee in charge of all military transportation by railways, rivers and seas.

An invaluable contribution to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War was made by the delivery of reinforcements to the front, weapons, ammunition, medicines. In 1941, the rapid transfer of troops from the Far East to Moscow actually saved the capital of our country from being captured by the German fascist invaders.

It is already difficult for a modern person, accustomed to mobile communications, to imagine that, just like cargo, triangular messages from relatives and friends were delivered to soldiers in railway cars or cars during the Great Patriotic War. And, conceived for them, these letters were even more important than food, ammunition or warm clothes. It is not for nothing that in wartime and after the Victory so many songs were composed, where field mail is mentioned.

Today, VOSO contributes to the rapid transfer of cargo and personnel of all branches of the armed forces, which means more efficient performance of their assigned tasks in peacetime or wartime.

The main feature of the military communications service is that, like no other military structure, it has to closely interact with civil services involved in cargo and passenger transportation by air, rail, sea or river transport. Therefore, representatives of VOSO are present in most of the departments of civil transport in our country.

The day of the service of military communications in our country has been officially celebrated since 2017, when the corresponding decree of the President of the Russian Federation was issued.

Even in Soviet times, I had a chance to deal with the reception and dispatch of railway transports with ammunition. To escort the transport, a guard came from the battalion of escorting military cargo, the chief of the guard was a conscript sergeant (there were no contract soldiers yet) and three sentries. They were allocated a so-called teplushka, a regular freight car, in which a flooring was made of boards where they slept, a partition of boards that fenced this flooring, a stove stove with a supply of coal, and at the opposite end of the car there was a latrine - a hole in the floor. And so they drove for a week, or even two. Guys, I congratulate you on the holiday, you served honestly.

Until 2007, while he served, nothing has changed. I'm sure it's the same now, the boys drive for a month or more in such hellish conditions. It is especially hard in winter, on the move, it blows everything, at least than swamps. The brake pads from the carriages are especially good at warming, the stove is red, but it soars disgustingly. It is also necessary to keep the pots hot so that they do not fall off. They also do not always succeed in washing, more often they fail than succeed. I served in the commandant's office and never nagged and did not write comments when checking the guards, unless they mow with weapons or sleep ... unshaven, dented shape ... And what first struck me was that they extorted rations and stew for it ... I would have looked at them, at their condition, if they had traveled the whole country in a freight car ...

Oh, the most interesting thing is how we drove, they did not allow coal from gondola cars to "take". Some with understanding, no problem, a couple of buckets from 70 tons will not decrease. But there were also especially stubborn, rotten people, there were 30 people on the street, and he felt sorry for a bucket of coal, although this coal was poured from the cars in sacks on the move ... But they were quickly put in place.

The VOSO service is undoubtedly needed, without it we cannot transfer troops in our vast country, but we only need it in good shape, and not in the way I saw it (true for a long time, but ...)
Low office ceilings and dwelling among civilians, and not in a military environment, is very relaxing, as a result, we often have almost civilians, with a learned mantra: “Don't heat the Polsters (these are such balls in the box of the carriage), ladies, there is no coal. - I'll sign it. " And then add it to the book in my office.

So I had to put in a position of a ban on further movement of the echelon (I was the head of this echelon), when already at the third major station from Moscow they could not bring bread to me in time, in Ryazan I had to scandal, drove to a dead end and the bread was delivered.
In Tashkent, they didn’t give coal: they said Russia changed money for new ones, but it didn’t give it to Uzbekistan, the old ones went down rapidly (1/10), they didn’t print their own yet - it’s 93 years old. I put a chain with buckets - there were carriages with coal across the track, and machine gunners - not to shoot, of course, but let me give you a kick if someone got in the way. In Samarkand, they tried to send us 5 times on the road with a hose in a container, which had not yet filled me with water. It was good there was a stop-tap in the second-class carriage - 5 times and pulled while the water was flowing.
It was a catastrophe, there was no longer a single country, VOSO and in a simpler time became lazy, and then ... Well, a big war with the mass transportation of troops did not happen - order would have been restored, of course, but many would have had to be shot ... lovers of stew ( as shown in The Soldier's Father).
I hope that now everything is not so, and those who serve on the holiday. But do not forget for whom and why you are sitting in large cities, and not in the taiga, and do not build up your beer belly.
