Plans, orders and new modification. Commercial prospects of the Su-57E

To date, the Russian aviation the industry has launched serial production of promising Su-57 fighters for our armed forces. An export version of the aircraft was also developed, which is offered to foreign countries. Orders for such equipment have not yet been received, but their appearance is expected in the very near future. In addition, it is planned to bring to the market a new modification of the aircraft.

An ambiguous past

The issues of exporting the future aircraft have been studied almost since the start of the PAK FA program. By the beginning of the tenth years, they found the first potential customer, and also determined the principles of further cooperation. India has shown interest in the new Russian aircraft, wishing to take part in the development of its export version.

In 2010, the experienced T-50 was shown for the first time to representatives of the Indian Ministry of Defense and Aviation Industry. They were satisfied, and in 2012 there was a formal cooperation agreement. In accordance with this document, the Russian United Aircraft Corporation and the Indian Hindustan Aeronautics Limited were to develop an updated Fifth-Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) project based on the PAK FA.

It was reported that the first customer of the FGFA would be the Indian Air Force. In the future, the two countries could bring such an aircraft to the international market and start selling it to other states. However, the search for buyers, as far as we know, did not have time to start.

In the mid-tenths, the situation around the FGFA changed. The Indian side began to criticize both the joint project and the basic PAK FA / T-50. Various complaints were made against this aircraft, and doubts were also expressed as to its compliance with the 5th generation criteria. In April 2018, India withdrew from the FGFA project and it was closed.

Having stopped working on FGFA, Russian enterprises used the accumulated experience in a new project. Already at the MAKS-2019 salon, foreign guests were shown the Su-57E export fighter. Several foreign armies became interested in this machine, but no real orders have been received yet. Our specialists and managers hope that the situation will change in the near future.

Intended customers

Against the background of events around FGFA, officials from different structures have repeatedly raised the topic of potential customers for such equipment. The failure of the Russian-Indian project had virtually no effect on this trend. They again talk about potential buyers, and their circle does not change.

It is expected that the modern export fighter Su-57E will be of interest to various countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Orders are also pending from the armies of South America. Unofficial reports previously mentioned possible deliveries to North African states showing great interest in Russian-developed military equipment.

Back in the summer of 2019, Turkey entered the circle of potential customers for the Su-57E. At MAKS-2019, the prototype was demonstrated to the military and political leadership of this country, and they did not exclude the possibility of purchasing such equipment. A real contract for the supply of aircraft has not yet been signed, but its appearance is still possible. The Turkish side is going to study its needs and proposals of foreign countries, and only after that the choice will be made in favor of the Su-57E or other imported equipment.

Even at the stage of the FGFA project, the Russian fighter attracted the attention of the Algerian Air Force. Later, representatives of this country got acquainted with the newer Su-57E and left good reviews. In the wake of these events, at the end of 2019 appeared news about signing a contract. Foreign media reported that the Algerian army ordered 14 Su-57E fighters and the same number of Su-34 bombers. Equipment with a total cost of approx. 6 billion US dollars will be transferred to the customer until 2025. However, the information about the Algerian order has not yet been officially confirmed.

There is information about other potential customers. So, in the fall of 2019, the leadership of Rostec spoke about the possible delivery of the Su-57E to the armies of India and the United Arab Emirates. The foreign press during the same period wrote about possible orders from China and Myanmar. It is noteworthy that China has two of its own 5th generation fighter projects. India after leaving FGFA only talks about a new generation, but no real steps are being observed.

New argument

A few days ago, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov spoke about plans to create another modification of the Su-57 fighter. This time the car of the latest generation is going to be made a two-seater, which will improve performance and gain new opportunities. In addition, such an aircraft will have to attract foreign customers.

What changes the new project envisages has not yet been specified. At the same time, one can assume where they will lead. Obviously, the two-seater cockpit will make the aircraft not only combat, but also training, and this will simplify the training of pilots. The increase in the crew will reduce the workload on both pilots, at least without losing efficiency. They will use advanced electronic and computing facilities to help them in all situations.

Demonstration flights at MAKS-2017. Photo of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation

A two-seat aircraft will be able to show increased efficiency in traditional and fundamentally new scenarios. For example, positive results should be expected in the context of the group use of the Su-57 and slave UAVs. It will be easier for a crew of two to fly and control Drones.

The two-seater Su-57 may more fully correspond to the views of some potential customers on promising technology. It should be recalled that the most popular Russian fighter on the international market is the Su-30, operated by two pilots. In a number of foreign tenders recently, fighters with a two-seater cockpit also won. A promising modification of the Su-57E will be a response to such trends.

General perspectives

Russian-made combat aircraft are very popular on the international market. New orders for this or that equipment are regularly received. However, the basis of such exports is still formed by fighters of the previous 4th generation. Our first sample of the next generation is already being offered to customers, but orders for it are not yet available.

This state of affairs is unpleasant, but it can only be considered a temporary problem. The Su-57E has every chance of gaining a foothold in the world market and even taking the place of the most popular Su-30. Several specific factors still interfere with obtaining such results, and it is necessary to get rid of them as soon as possible.

The main problem at the moment can be considered a low production rate. The production of the Su-57 is already underway using serial technology, but the number of manufactured equipment is still small. To re-equip its own aerospace forces and to fulfill foreign orders, large-scale production is required. They plan to solve this problem within the next few years, and this will lead to obvious positive consequences.

The export potential of the Su-57 can be increased by creating a new modification with a two-seater cockpit. However, such a project is still only planned, and it will take several years to develop and master production. During this time, customers can only be offered a basic single-seat aircraft.

Finding customers can be difficult for political and other reasons. The Russian Su-57E on the international market is becoming the main competitor of the American F-35 fighter. The United States already has a lot of orders for such equipment and is interested in new ones. As potential buyers, they consider countries that may also be interested in Russian aircraft. Time will show how the struggle for the contracts of these countries will look and what it will lead to.

Pending orders

Thus, the Su-57 fighter in the original and proposed two-seat version has great export prospects, but they have not yet been realized. There are several typical problems on the way of the aircraft to international contracts, which should be dealt with in the near future. As a result of such events, potential customers will begin to turn into real recipients of Russian equipment.

How soon it will be possible to solve all the problems and get the first orders - it is unclear. However, there is reason for optimism. This time, the topic of exporting the Su-57 is being discussed a few weeks before the start of the MAKS-2021 salon. It is quite possible that this is not a mere coincidence, and a long-awaited export contract will be signed at a future exhibition.

Commercial prospects of the Su-57E ....

First, you need to saturate your own videoconferencing with the required number of new fighters. Without this, it is absurd to talk about "commercial prospects".

I agree, moreover, it is far from the truth.
The Russian Su-57E on the international market is becoming the main competitor of the American F-35 fighter.
Not once, not in one category.
And so there is no need to compare the commercial version with the basic one. If you were offered to buy the most advanced vacuum cleaner, but on the condition that it will not collect all the garbage, but only of certain sizes, but at the price of the brand, would you take it? So it is here. So, the question of buying does not depend on the brand, on the satisfaction of the customer's requirements. Here, as it were, soft and warm intertwines.

I am interested in one moment in this matter.
Russia negotiates with the Indians, the Chinese, etc., but for some reason ignores us. But Kazakhstan is very interested in cooperation in the military-industrial complex and not only. We need modern air defense systems, aviation, electronic warfare systems, UAVs, etc. We are ready to give money and build factories, but we get negative answers - we even buy a Buk in the export version - we can agree on protecting Russia's interests. I don't know what the problem is, maybe Ak-Orda is to blame somewhere, but I know that ours are ready for a lot. I will not deny that it was that the T-72s were sold to Jordan, which ended up in the hands of the barmaley - ours themselves were in shock, but as it turned out, NATO was behind it.
I will give one example to prove it. Tu-334 - they were ready to give money for everything (modernization, industry and pre-production order), but ... NATO supporters crushed the production of "Utes" in Uralsk - everyone thought, skiff - but no, production was recently resumed. Bearings in Stepnogorsk - it didn't work out - pulled in the Russians in order to keep production. Titanium, uranium, Ulba Metallurgical Plant with rare earth, etc ...
I don't understand what the problem is. Could it be that these nomads have left their imperial manners and Moscow still has a vector to Europe?
"Knowledgeable" people in the Republic of Kazakhstan say that somehow they have begun to negotiate on space (Baikonur and Soyuz-5), but they AFFIRM that Moscow wanted to "sneeze" at us - I don’t presume to assert the truth or not. hi

There were many claims ... more important. It is not so difficult to make a twin ... There were complaints about the key options of the 5th generation: The presence of AFAR, turbojet engine, stealth characteristics,% of composites in the fuselage ..... some problems with strength were due to the presence of internal compartments ..... etc.
And, plus, the Indians wanted (according to the experience of S30MKI) to get production technologies for the ball. But 2018 in the Russian Federation is not 1990 .....

India withdrew from the project due to the fact that they were not satisfied with the characteristics of the aircraft for stealth, due to the power plant used and disruptions in the development time.

For marketing the Su-57E, downed penguins are needed, for example, in Syria. Precisely knocked down, like a lame goblin in Yugoslavia, and not fallen from a collision with a bird laughing or under unclear circumstances, like in Japan.

    Export potential?
    Zero!
All sanctions amendments will remain in effect for many, many years.
    Do not flatter yourself.
The example of Indonesia, Egypt - like the first swallows.
In the best case, a few pieces will be delivered to Belarus as a "gift".
Even in Kazakhstan, I'm not sure.
    For others it is unrealistic!
    Very expensive to buy.
    Prohibitively expensive to maintain.
training of pilots and technicians for 5th generation aircraft is not at all the same as for 4th generation with pluses.
All weapons are new and expensive.
The new generation of aircraft is an entire new support infrastructure.
    Iran? Sanctions...
Vietnam? Tunisia? Malaysia? they have relatively fresh planes, which are also not cheap, and they will not be able to break the last money-boxes for another 20-25 years.
And these countries do not have an escalation potential.
Vietnam will never oppose China anyway.
Tunisia also has no problems in northern Africa.
The Malays can, due to a sluggish confrontation with Indonesia, talk about something, but ... no.

        So.
The involvement of a potential consumer in the development and production program from the earliest stage - gives a greater percentage of interest.
For this is not only the purchase of military equipment (government expenditures), but also the employment of the ordinary population (government revenues along direct and indirect lines).

Large batches = more than 10-15 units, as our yellow-faced partners like to buy from us.
To whom to sell - Egypt / India / Turkey / Ethiopia / UAE / PRC / Brazil / South Africa / Argentina / Kazakhstan / Mexico / Nigeria. I do not consider the Philippines because of their difficult relationship with the PRC, although in principle it is also a very interesting market (although Duterte is a great sausage), Iran would also be a good market, but because of its position in Israel it would not be the best idea. taking into account its purchasing power also, in principle, cannot be non-homeopathic. Deliveries to Vietnam might be an interesting idea - but again, it is difficult to assess how much Vietnam needs them and how this will affect our relationship with the PRC.
Perhaps Indonesia - but here you have to dig for the details.

The rest are either not in our weapons system, or too poor.

None of them will buy a plane worth well over $ 100 million a piece, not counting the costs of:
          - training of pilots,
          - complete rearmament with appropriate missiles,
          - purchase of supporting equipment for avionics diagnostics,
          - procurement of supporting equipment to ensure airfield based,
          etc. etc.

And the poorest Argentina, which even decommissioned 40-year-old planes cannot afford, is nonsense at all.

In this context, I completely disagree with you.
For there is such a thing as psychology.
For the past three years, China has been keeping all the ears of its citizens buzzing that they are at the pinnacle of progress.
The purchases of foreign weapons by China are practically reduced to zero.
Separate components are also being bought, but the systems as a whole have not been bought for at least three years.
              And even longer.
Even if they want to touch the Su-57, they will never buy it. Officially. For they will lose face. And they lose it only within the Chinese culture.
It is on this aspect of the Chinese mentality, observation over many years, that I conclude that China will not buy.

Who's talking about money? And what kind of money is dollars? From which we "kind of leave"? We are developing concessions all over the world - and Argentina is a hefty resource piece, so they have something to "buy" for - here our ability to sell is important. No matter what the state of the economy of a particular state is, two factors are important in the sale of arms - the relative stability of the political system and a certain level of ambition. Each of the above countries has both.
You say that Argentina's Armed Forces fleet is outdated - but is it a dead end? This is the opposite of what is an opportunity for a good deal. When the United States sells its F-35s to Poland, Denmark or Greece, these are not the richest countries. However, the deal "comes through" because the Americans know how to sell, which we should learn, because we are losing markets - we are being squeezed by both the Chinese and the Europeans.

China will definitely be interested in buying - at least to study technology and compare with its stock. Another thing is that China is interested in smaller parties, and there are more of us - here we have to find some kind of compromise that is beneficial to us and acceptable to them. The 5th generation of aircraft is a rather delicate matter - the PRC does not have the opportunity to study the F-22 / F-35, but they got the hang of studying and copying our equipment.

Egypt or Ethiopia, I would not call "poor" - Ethiopia is currently implementing the Aswan Dam / HPP, which it needs to cover from the air from its neighbors, who, to put it mildly, do not like this dam. There is a "question price" and where there is a question price, there is also an arms market.
Specifically, Egypt has a very reasonable policy (for the region) and a good economy (again, for the region), while the region itself leaves much to be desired in terms of security.

South Africa is interesting again - concessions, it is also worth considering that they have somewhat lost their technical competence since the time of apartheid, while economically it is one of the strongest African states, which is in difficult relations with neighbors on a broad front.

Mexico / Brazil is one of the richest states in Lat. America - the latter is also with a claim to regional leadership and is not in the most ideal relations with its neighbors.

Yes there is. Up to 1,4M with 6 missiles.

Do you have internal compartments for weapons?

So I write, this will not allow Rafal to be the 5th generation.

Will not. They simply do not need this plane.

Cite a source that says Raphael has supersonic cruising speed without using afterburner. This is the first time I hear such information.
I can give you a link to the plate with the performance characteristics of aircraft of the 4th generation. Raphael has the lowest top speed, the weakest engines. How can he accelerate to supersonic without afterburner? Explain.

It only speaks of your incompetence. As well as the "tablets" given by you. Information about this is located in 5 minutes. Rafal, Eurofighter, Gripen have non-afterburning supersonic with weapons and / or PTB. The Su-35 also has it, but without weapons and PTB.

Even without regard to all other reasons: the Su-57 will not be bought for one simple reason - there is no established production and service, which is very important for complex equipment.
How many planes are there in the troops? How much can the industry export? Single copies. Nobody will wait twenty years for the cars to arrive. It's easier to buy fourth-generation aircraft and not take a steam bath.

This is what I cannot understand. The Americans, in order to make it easier for the pilot to complete the combat mission and relieve him of secondary work, automated the control of the aircraft as much as possible by installing a powerful combat computer and developing unique software. Here, judging by what the author writes, this task is being solved by an additional crew member ... By 2024, the Bl.35 software will be loaded on the F-4. This will dramatically increase the combat capabilities of the aircraft both in armament and in flight characteristics. Are we going to fend off this threat by increasing the crew to 3-4 people? Two trends in the development of combat aviation?

Lord, what a politically correct article ... Everything is called some kind of roundabout ...
How long can you promote an empty space, there is almost nothing yet ...

"Our first sample of the next generation is already being offered to customers, but there are no orders for it yet." - there are no orders, although they even offered the killer Endogan.

"The Russian Su-57E on the international market is becoming the main competitor to the American F-35 fighter." Yes nifiga, sheer ... fantasy.

"The production of the Su-57 is already underway using serial technology, but the number of manufactured equipment is still small."
To put it bluntly - only 1H, and with an obscure motor, the pocket does not allow ...

In general, everyone has refused so far, and especially the Indians. They love to dance in films, but they are not fools and they know how to count money. Apparently, after such a scammed pace with SU, IL, missiles - they were offended ...

So, what do we have at this stage, specifically what the Su-57 is and how it differs from the F-22 and 35.
    1) The world's first combat fighter with optional unmanned mode
    2) The world's first fighter capable of carrying hypersonic missiles.
    3) The world's first fighter with actually working stealth technology (none of the 57x transfers to the SAR were tracked by the radars of either Israel, Turkey, or NATO as a whole.
    4) The world's first fighter capable of flying drones as part of a single complex
    5) flight characteristics exceeding even the flight characteristics of the Su-35 of the most maneuverable MFI in the world.
    6) Immediately after the Su-57 was put into service (December 2020), the production of the F-35 was completely stopped and their purchase was stopped. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
    7) And this is only from the known

Known, they forgot to say about the number in service, and in which countries of the world this miracle technology ...
And do not forget to find out, maybe in the NATO countries all production of fighters has been stopped ... You never know.

How can one make a small novel "war and peace" from "news", in one and a half paragraphs, not in terms of a masterpiece of literary thought, like Lev Nikolaevich's, but like Ryabov's: "I want more and more bukoff and znakoff", and pofik, that the thought (and it is completely absent) is repeated 100500 times ... But how can you print this?

If you start to study the materiel and not the slogans of your colleagues, you will understand why Russia is in no hurry with the introduction of the 57th into mass production, throwing efforts to fine-tune this most high-tech IFI in the world.
Moreover, after the interception of the Italian F-9 by the Russian Su-2021SM on June 35, 30, it became clear that there was no need to rush at all.

I had already studied the materiel when I finished Faki in Dolgoprudny ...
And what about interception, who intercepted whom in the end?

There is nothing special about the interception of the F-35 by the Russian Su-30 SM. There, the F-35s fly with lenses because they carry out the function of EP policy and they do not need any stealth. But here is a very powerful e-optical senzori, which is very useful for further recognition of objects
