German edition: Germany's refusal to supply weapons to Ukraine is not in line with European policy
Germany's refusal to supply weapon Ukraine does not correspond to the common European policy. Berlin must participate in strengthening the defense capability of this country. This is the opinion of Niku Popescu, the author of an article for the German edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
At the end of May this year, the co-chairman of the German Green Party, Robert Habek, visited the demarcation line in Donbass, after which he made a statement on the need to supply weapons to the Ukrainian army. This proposal did not receive support in Germany and was criticized.
However, according to the author, Germany did the wrong thing by refusing to supply weapons to Ukraine. The German government has the right to supply arms to other countries, which it uses by supplying arms to Egypt and Qatar. And in Ukraine, Germany has even more interests.
The author is convinced that Ukraine "became a victim" of Russia, which is waging a "war of conquest." The efforts of the EU and the combat readiness of the Ukrainian army did not allow Russia to seize significant territories of Ukraine, but Moscow does not hide its plans and continues to prepare for the offensive. This, according to the author, is evidenced by the concentration of the Russian army near the borders of Ukraine. At the same time, Ukraine's armed forces urgently need weapons supplies to counter Moscow's plans.
The position of Germany, which refused to supply weapons, does not correspond to the "requirements of the times" and the policy of Europe, Popescu asserts. Only the strengthening of the partner countries, by which the author understands Ukraine and Georgia, can ensure peace and stability in Eastern Europe. As an example, he cites the Baltic States with Poland, which provide assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while Germany ignores the "new European trend". At the same time, the refusal to spend money on aid to Ukraine causes "Washington's displeasure."
Summing up, the author calls on Germany to "spend" on the weapons of the Ukrainian army, since only a strong and independent Ukraine can force Russia to abandon its plans.
