Swedish press: NATO teases Kremlin with its war games ahead of Putin-Biden meeting
Before Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin meet in Geneva, NATO teases the Kremlin with its war games, which are taking place near the borders of the Russian Federation. And although Joe Biden is formally considered the main protagonist at the NATO summit preceding the Geneva event, in fact the meeting of the leaders of NATO countries is largely devoted to the Russian president.
Swedish columnist Jonas Gumesson writes about this in an article published in the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.
The author argues that most of all the alliance state is concerned about the strengthening of Russia's military power, which may threaten security on the European continent. Despite this, NATO countries are in no hurry to spend too much on defense needs, for which they are constantly criticized by the United States.
Of the 30 alliance countries, only 11 spend at least two percent of GDP on defense. And France in general is striving for complete self-sufficiency of the European Union, opposing excessive dependence on the American defense-industrial complex.
At the same time, a whole string of NATO military exercises are taking place in the European region, which cannot but irritate Russia and President Vladimir Putin personally. It can hardly be considered a coincidence that they intensified significantly on the eve of the meeting of the leaders of the Russian Federation and the United States. Perhaps such a show of power plays the role of leverage for pressure on the Kremlin.
