NATO intends to abandon the deployment of land-based installations of nuclear missiles in Europe
NATO will not deploy land-based nuclear missiles in Europe. This decision is planned to be taken at the upcoming NATO summit in Brussels, which will be held on Monday, June 14.
According to Defense News, referring to its own sources, on the eve of the meeting of US and Russian Presidents Joe Baden and Vladimir Putin, NATO decided to come up with an initiative to abandon the deployment of ground-based missiles with nuclear warheads in Europe. At the NATO summit, which will be held tomorrow, Monday, this proposal will be put to a vote and must be adopted.
According to two officials representing Europe and the United States, a clause banning the deployment of nuclear missiles on European territory has already been included in the draft final communiqué of the summit.
According to the newspaper, having made such a decision, NATO will try to relieve tension in relations with Russia. In addition, the decision should set the stage for discussions on arms control between Biden and Putin.
Earlier, the media reported that the leaders of the two countries at a meeting in Geneva will certainly raise the issue of further arms control. Against the background of the termination of the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles (INF Treaty) and the US attempts to finally bury START-3, this issue becomes very urgent. Moscow has repeatedly stated that if the United States refuses to deploy missiles in Europe, Russia will also not deploy its ground installations in the European part of the country.
