US Air Force intends to increase the number of air bases with storage of nuclear weapons
The United States intends to increase the number of air bases in the United States with nuclear weapons... As follows from the data of the Federation of American Scientists, by 2030 their number will increase to five.
Currently, the US Air Force has five strategic air bases aviation, but only two of them have nuclear weapons storage facilities. If the American strategic bombers B-52H Stratofortress, B-2 Spirit and B-1B Lancer are deployed at Minot air bases in North Dakota, Whiteman in Missouri, Barksdale in Louisiana, Ellsworth in South Carolina and Dyess in Texas, then nuclear weapons are stored only at air bases Minot and Whiteman.
While the basis of US strategic aviation is B-52H, B-2 and B-1B, the Air Force command seems to be satisfied with this situation, but with the advent of the newest strategic bomber B-21 Raider, the military demands to deploy nuclear weapons storage at the other three air bases.
Whether work is already underway in this direction has not yet been reported, but judging by the deadlines, it can be assumed that they have already begun.
Meanwhile, it became known that the first two samples of the B-21 Raider have already been assembled and are undergoing ground tests, flights are scheduled for the next year, 2022. The US Air Force stressed that starting from the first flight model, the aircraft will receive systems and software for delivering nuclear strikes. However, in the first few years of service, the aircraft will not be certified for the transport and use of strategic weapons.
The B-21 Raider has been in development for the United States Air Force since 2015, when Northrop Grumman was awarded a contract to build it. The new bomber is based on the "flying wing" design.
The US Air Force command expects the first bombers to enter service in the mid-2020s. According to available information, it is planned to purchase at least one hundred new aircraft, which should gradually replace the aging strategic bombers B-52 Stratofortress and B-2 Spirit.
