Domestic rocket engines: Soviet legacy and modernity

35

In 2021, Russia and the whole world celebrated the 60th anniversary of the flight of the first man into space. The smile of Yuri Gagarin personifies the victory that was achieved in the already distant 1961 by Soviet science and engineering. Today, when it comes to the development of the domestic space industry, it is difficult to ignore the Soviet legacy that is bearing fruit to this day. Until now, rocket engines, the development of which was carried out in the Soviet era, are also actively used.

Russia, thanks to the Soviet scientific and engineering school, remains among the world leaders in the field of space rocketry. Not only Russian rockets are sent into space on our engines. For a long time, the Americans also have to buy engines for their missiles from the Russian Federation. By and large, if at one time Russia had decided to demonstrate character and responded to American sanctions by banning the supply of rocket engines to the United States, then the United States would have been left “without space” for several years. But this did not happen, since the Russian Federation continues to position itself as a reliable partner, which is ready to cooperate with the same Washington, even under the constant sanctions pressure from its side.

On the channel "Star" the release of the Military Acceptance program was released, dedicated to the development, creation and operation of Russian rocket engines. The program also talks about a unique rocket engine that does not need the usual fuel.

About domestic engines as a Soviet heritage and modern developments:

This, of course, is not true. If Russia banned the supply of engines to the United States, ULA and Orbital would suffer from this, and SpaceX would happily rub their hands with their Merlin engines of their own production.

If the government banned the supply of engines to the United States, then most likely it would be more difficult for us to save this industry.

“Today, foreign contracts provide more than half of the revenue, the rest is government orders. The bulk of the revenue is generated from the supply of rocket engines to the United States - RD-180 for United Launch Alliance and RD-181 for Orbital ATK, ”said Igor Arbuzov, CEO of Energomash, in January 2018.

SpaceX, with their own-made Merlin engines, would be gleefully rubbing their hands.

They already do 4 launches a month.
On the ISS on June 3 with a fresh booster equipped with new cameras and a broadcast channel

Today the old commercial satellite Sirius took out

A week later, a global navigation satellite. And a week later, a 70 seater bus.

Since the beginning of the year, Musk has 18 launches - 16 for China - 8 for Russia.

Science - we believe, we hope.
Vnvebov - yes, as long as there is money, they can wait until broadcasting.
Luna 25 - probably not flying:
Now Dmitry Rogozin said that the launch could be postponed to 2022. “In August, we will understand exactly what is happening in terms of time. The second launch window is February 2022 and the third is May 2022. February window we brush aside, because there you will have to do very complex orbital “body movements”,

                  That is probably May 2022.

Others are the ISS program. Express, Meteors, Messengers, Ionospheres, Glonass. Something will leave for 22 years. But something will be released.

Everything they could and wanted, they pissed off. Much has been lost in other republics, which alone Yuzhmash is worth. And ship turbines from Nikolaev? There were many unique things in Belarus. But much has been saved, much has already been recreated from scratch. Life does not stand still, work continues. And here, not only money is needed, we have huge problems with education. And with space, as with rocket engines, everything is not so bad. New missile systems are an example for you.

By and large, if at one time Russia had decided to demonstrate character and responded to American sanctions by banning the supply of rocket engines to the United States, then the United States would have been left “without space” for several years.

Russian engines are used in only one American rocket, the Atlas-5. This is a conversion missile, converted from ballistic missiles decommissioned and already paid for by the Pentagon. Because at the time it was profitable. The share of Atlas launches per year is 3-5 out of about 40 US launches. There would be no Atlas, the Deltas would take its place, so what kind of "would be left without space" can we talk about request

Further, the RD-180 does not belong to Russia and it cannot simply refuse to supply it. Due to their high cost, Atlases are currently flown mainly for the interests of the military, so by selling engines, Russia strengthens the US defenses.

Well, by and large, Russia should be grateful that the United States actually saved its space industry during the collapse of the 90s by loading space shipyards with orders. Basically, of course, this was done so that specialists would not scatter to countries like Iran or North Korea, but nonetheless.

the same goes for the air launch - now we’ll stop making turbines, we’ll leave the MS-21 with all the cooperation, we’ll put the engine in one place and take care of the superduper heavy-aircraft - we urgently need an air launch.

3:23 "800 tons of thrust, that means 246 thousand horses" - I wonder how much more this error will be dragged from one video to another, from one article to another. 246 thousand horsepower (in human units - 180 MW) is the power of the turbine. Which, as part of a turbopump, pumps fuel from tanks into the combustion chamber.

        to say, to say,
        please:
RS-18A-B, call sign Stiletto, that is, a converted Rokot.
Rokot threw 2200 kg for 200 km, plus he could deliver it to orbits, and the second Rokot-M would be more powerful.
360 mines were dug for them, even if a third was cut in Ukraine in the nineties - there are reserves.
        .
June 2020 - an agreement between the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Khrunichev Center on the conversion of RS-18B Stiletto ballistic missiles removed from combat duty into launch vehicles that received the Rokot-M index, without the use of Ukrainian components.
March 2021, on the website of the launch services operator, Eurockot Launch Services GmbH, it was reported that the first launch of the Rokot conversion light class launch vehicle, created without Ukrainian components, will take place in the second half of 2022, this will be a commercial launch. It is also indicated that the company is ready to accept orders for launch services.
the cost of launches - there is a figure of about 45 million dollars - this is with the whole economy.

I have a lot to say in fact, and I do not want to be silent. For example, have you heard that Roskosmos allegedly refused to participate in the construction of a circumlunar orbital station? Rogozin tweeted there that they say the Americans do not want to work according to joint standards. Do you know what happened there? Amers have 110 volts in their modules, Russia has 24 volts. Now, for example, Boeing ordered a 24-volt to 110-volt adapter from Russia for its Starliner for docking with the ISS. But when NASA requested the creation of a 110-volt gateway from Russia, Roskosmos said that it could not, the competencies were lost. Well, further propaganda tried to somehow present it as a victory.

            and for what?
there is only one goal - the military-industrial complex should work, saw the loot, politicians should triumph, sticking a flag into the moon on their behalf. a bonus fresh selfie from orbit and the surface and stones (though not precious).
And all this is desirable at someone else's expense. they can no longer stop - they swelled fifty yards.
but these are plans until the 30th year, then they MUST (OTHEREVER EVERYTHING DOWN THE CAT - just a repeat of fifty years ago) according to plans after 2030, to build a lunar base, and this is no longer a couple of people with a rover, you can’t get off with a trifle.
and again the same question pops up - WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF ALL THIS ACTION?

Perhaps nowhere is there such a high tension in work as in the space industry. Here both military orders and for the national economy. The path from the development of a new engine to production is not easy. And not only here it is a matter of bureaucracy. Lack of funds is the main thing. All enterprises in the space industry are ready to provide something new. But the choice fell on one or two enterprises. And those who remained on the sidelines are forced to lay off workers and employees. Now things seem to be getting better with this, but the issue of money remains the most important.

Stalin and the Bolsheviks created such a base that they destroyed it starting in 1967 and could not destroy it. But then the Americans suggested - cover everything and fall apart, and they did what two huge wars on the territory of Soviet Russia, and then the USSR, could not do. But well done, the drunken government decided to be an appendage, as Stalin wrote. So they remained an appendage to this day.
