"They promised to be admitted to the EU": Zelensky held talks with Macron and Merkel
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Paris, where he held talks with French leader Emmanuel Macron, as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who participated via video link. The general statement made by the leaders of Ukraine, France and Germany after the meeting was greeted with enthusiasm in Ukraine.
So what did Zelensky, Macron and Merkel talk about and what promises did the Ukrainian president bring from Paris? The main thing that Zelensky has achieved is a general statement by the leaders of the three countries, in which they call on Russia to withdraw its troops from the Ukrainian border. That's all.
True, Zelensky also said that he discussed with Macron and Merkel Ukraine's accession to the EU, but even in the Ukrainian press this is mentioned in passing, without specifics, whether the leaders of France and Germany promised something or not. It is reported that the Ukrainian president asked the French to support the declaration on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. That's all. The question of Ukraine's joining NATO, which the Ukrainian president has tirelessly repeated in recent days as "the only way out to end the military conflict in Donbass," was not raised at all.
Of course, the issue of the implementation of the Minsk agreements was not ignored. In Kiev, before the meeting in Paris, they repeatedly spoke about the need to hold a meeting of all the leaders of the "Normandy format", but it was possible to agree only on a meeting of "political advisers" to be held on April 19.
Thus, one can sum up the results of the Parisian voyage of the President of Ukraine. Kiev was once again promised to be admitted to the EU, which has already been done repeatedly over the course of several years. Of course, they called on Russia to stop "building up military strength" near the borders of Ukraine, but this statement, in one form or another, has been heard for more than a week from everyone who can. And, of course, we agreed to start work on the Minsk agreements, but Russia also called for this, and it was not necessary to go to Paris.
Whether or not he achieved what he wanted, Zelensky certainly won't say. He will again declare Europe's full support for all of Ukraine's undertakings and the imminent entry into the EU and NATO. And for this in Paris it was possible not to go.
