Louis Maurer. Buffalo Bill is hunting buffalo

The opinion of those in power can be formed in the same way as the opinion of the last drunkard. The only difference is that for the former you need to try and lay out the money, and the latter will have enough vodka for the eyes. That is, a good PR - everything is in the head. Including in the field of distribution of certain types weapons...

The buffalo hunters have done more in the past two years to address the Indian problem than the entire regular army has done in the past 30 years. They are destroying the material base of the Indians. Send them gunpowder and lead if you like, and let them kill, skin, and sell them until they kill all the buffalo!

(General Philip Sheridan)

History weapons. And it so happened that the youngest son of Emperor Alexander II, Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, was captivated by American exoticism and decided to hunt buffalo on the prairies of the United States. He was a man in all respects worthy: he had an athletic physique, he obviously went to daddy by force, but he still possessed “infinite charm”, as the head of the palace chancery A. Mosolov wrote about him, about the Grand Duke.

George Catlin. Bison hunting

A man in the Empire, he was well, very significant, there is nowhere to go: the fourth son of Emperor Alexander II, brother of Alexander III, uncle of Nicholas II. And he was also an admiral general, that is, the main "chief" of the Russian naval fleet, but he did not shy away from art either - he was the chairman of the Imperial Society of Ballet Patrons, that is, he was a gifted and versatile person. I understood both in ships and in ballerinas, but then I decided to have some fun at the state expense and went on an official visit to the United States. Well, it is clear that the Grand Duke had only to wish that such a hunt was immediately included in the program of his stay. Later, the prince said more than once that this visit to him across the ocean, in his opinion, was the best episode in his life - let alone something, but he could not complain about his grand-ducal life.

However, there were different rumors among the people about the purpose of Alexei Romanov's visit to the United States. It is clear that no one canceled the official part of it, but they also said that the young prince the Tsar-Father simply decided to get rid of the actresses.

The visit began on November 20, 1871, when the frigate "Svetlana" delivered the Grand Duke to New York, and ended on February 23, 1872, that is, it would not be an exaggeration to say that our prince in America was somewhat ... "stuck." However, he had very good reasons for that. The fact is that then in American society they looked at Russia as the most devoted friend, again, we freed the peasants, just like they did the slaves, so now nothing prevented republican America from being friends with monarchist Russia. The prince met and had a conversation with President Ulysses Grant, talked with senators and generals, commanded a Broadway parade specially organized for him, visited West Point, and was shown the latest American torpedoes at the Brooklyn shipyard. This was the end of the official part of the visit, but ... then the prince was taken across the country.

Aleksey Aleksandrovich. Miniature of those years

He visited 34 cities in the United States, and everywhere in his honor, ceremonies, balls and banquets were held, and he made a particularly strong impression on American ladies. Well, yes, still: a blond, blue-eyed handsome man who perfectly holds himself in the saddle and wears such beautiful uniforms - ah and ah! With how many ladies of "light" and "half-light" he slept during this time, history is silent, but it is clear that he did not stay in the monastic rank and did not deny himself carnal pleasures.

However, he also wanted to hunt for buffalo, which he so bluntly told General Sheridan, and he did not fail to report the guest's desire to Grant himself. And he, being the Supreme Commander of the US Army (and a renowned Civil War general, besides!), Immediately dispatched the entire Western Division of the US War Department to conduct the "hunting fun", and entrusted Sheridan with carrying out this "operation".

The headquarters of the safari for the Grand Duke was located in North Plata, and Sheridan, for the sake of complete success, hired the most famous local resident, the former scout scout William Cody, nicknamed Buffalo Bill. True, at that time he was only 25 years old, but in America no one looked at his age, the main thing was how much a person succeeds in his business, and in everything that was associated with the extermination of buffalo, Cody succeeded to the maximum!

It is clear that local flavor was indispensable, and such, of course, were the Indians. And Sheridan ordered Buffalo Bill to find a Sioux chief named Spotted Tail and negotiate with him about the participation of his people in the "crowd." And Buffalo Bill made an agreement, promising the chief ... a thousand pounds of tobacco. But this was not enough, and another hero of the North American States, 32-year-old General George Custer, was urgently summoned from Kentucky to personally lead the royal hunt in the role of Grand Marshal.

Haida Moccasins, 1880, National Museum of the American Indian, Washington

They set up a camp on the prairie, which they flatteringly called "Alexey." The soldiers of the Western Division worked hard, but cleared one and a half hectares of snow from the snow, set up spacious tents for the prince and his retinue, and carpets, furniture, and bed linen were brought to the prairie from Chicago! Then they built a camp of four dozen tents (!) For their retinue - adjutants, orderlies and servants. Just in case, two medical tents were also equipped, flagpoles for banners were driven into the ground, and pits for latrines were dug or, better to say, cut down in the frozen ground, firewood and brushwood were prepared for heating - in a word, in a matter of days, a truly huge work that cost a lot of money. But to strengthen friendship between Russia and the United States, the Americans were ready for anything and - did not disappoint!

The prince rode across the snow-covered prairie on a letter train personally prepared for him, consisting of five luxurious Pullman cars. Well, to meet him at the station, probably almost the entire population of this town went, and with Buffalo Bill at the head - a man of six feet in a colorful leather suit, a fur coat up to the feet, boots with spurs and a black hat with soft brim sample. The cortege stretched out for a considerable distance, and it was not surprising, because more than five hundred people and more than a hundred carriages followed along with the prince, as well as many carts with provisions for such a mass of people, of which three were carrying only alcohol! They were accompanied by a whole battalion of cavalrymen, a military band playing their marches and several Indians in picturesque headdresses.

It took about 8 hours to get to the camp, so far from the "civilization" it was. The prince was greeted in a purely princely manner - with the performance of the hymn "God Save the Tsar" and a festive dinner with champagne. And this was only the beginning of the celebrations, because the next day, February 14, the prince had his birthday, and he was literally inundated with gifts, including ... samples of American weapons of excellent manufacture and from various companies. However, the prince dreamed of hunting, and God sent him a buffalo hunt! Buffalo Bill, who went on a reconnaissance mission, managed to find a herd of buffalo only twenty miles from the camp, and so everyone went to him, drinking champagne at breakfast again for the health of the Grand Duke.

Albert Bierstadt. Bison hunting

At first, however, the prince was not at all lucky: either the hand was trembling after abundant libations, or the excitement was too great: after all, to see a herd of buffalo rushing close up is not for the faint of heart, a habit is needed here. The main thing is that he missed all the time. Then Buffalo Bill gave him his gun, and with him the prince finally killed his first buffalo, and not just a buffalo, but the leader of the herd himself! Alexey Alexandrovich's delight simply knew no bounds, and he immediately ordered all the participants in the hunt to bring champagne.

Kiowa Indian drawing. Kiowa on the warpath. National Museum of the American Indian, Washington

And upon returning to the camp, another surprise awaited him: the Sioux Indians of the Spotted Tail tribe who arrived there greeted him with a loud battle cry - well, everything is just exactly according to the novels of Mine Reed and Fenimore Cooper! Well, the next day the hunt was repeated, only now the Indians were hunting them, and the whites were watching them. And they had something to see, because the Indians shot at the buffalo with bows, coming close to them almost closely, and deftly controlled their horses with their legs. And then the Grand Duke himself joined them - he managed to shoot eight buffalo, so the success of the hunt exceeded all his expectations. And besides, in the evening in the camp the Indians gave him a real show with military dances and recitations, which were immediately translated to the prince by an Indian who spoke English well.

The prince was delighted and ... presented gifts to all the participants in this action - 38 revolvers and knives with ivory handles, which cost the Russian treasury a lot of money. But as a return gift, Spotted Tail handed him ... a real tepee and a bow and arrow. The prince will then bring all these souvenirs to Petersburg, and the young offspring of the Romanovs' house will play with them for a long time to come.

Interestingly, on this hunt, the Grand Duke became so friends with George Custer that he offered to accompany him on a further trip around the country, visit Kentucky and even sail down the Mississippi to New Orleans. Then they corresponded for a few more years, until an Indian bullet ended Caster's life in the fateful battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.

Here it is necessary to get a little distracted from this hunt itself, and from the very visit of our Grand Duke to the United States and notice that it has always been and will be so: while the "higher" are drinking and having fun, while also doing important "state affairs" The “lower ones” do exactly everything without which the state cannot exist. So while the Grand Duke Alexei rode around the States, our military specialists were there since 1867: Colonel Alexander Petrovich Gorlov and Captain Karl Ivanovich Gunius. Through their efforts, the Russian army adopted the rifle of Hiram Berdan, modified by them - "Berdan No. 1" (model 1868) with a folding bolt, produced in an amount of about 37 thousand copies. At the same time, the important issue of arming the imperial army with a revolver was also being resolved in Russia, since before that it was armed with a single-shot primer pistol.

Buffalo hide Comanche shield. National Museum of the American Indian, Washington

However, it cannot be said that there were no revolvers in the Russian army at all. Back in the fall of 1854, Nicholas I received the famous Samuel Colt at his Winter Palace and received from him three completely luxuriously finished revolvers: a dragoon, a naval and a pocket model. The tsar liked the revolvers, and he ordered to make such 400 pieces at the Tula arms factory and equip officers of the guards naval crew and the rifle regiment of the imperial family with them, which was done in just a year.

What man's heart will not flinch from such a gift? This revolver of the Dragoon model is paired with the revolver donated by Colt to Tsar Nicholas I, and both of them are rightly ranked among the masterpieces of weaponry. It is part of a set of three pairs of gold-encrusted revolvers that Colt took with him to Europe in 1854. This year, the Crimean War broke out, in which Russia clashed with Turkey and its allies, Britain and France, and Colt actively sold weapons to both sides. In November 1854, he presented the Russian Tsar Nicholas I with three gold-inlaid revolvers, one from each pair. Of these, the third - the "dragoon model" with serial number 12407, is now in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The gift clearly demonstrated both the technical and artistic merit of his products, as well as his patriotism, which is present in the design of this revolver. After all, it depicts a portrait of George Washington and the coat of arms of the United States, and on the pistol presented to the king - a view of the Capitol building in Washington. The cost of such gift colts reached $ 400, and this despite the fact that the cost of the serial was 12 ... (Metropolitan Museum, New York)

However, for a regular army of many thousands, revolvers required not hundreds, but many thousands, and the most modern in time, while the famous "Colts" in the early 70s were no longer such. And again, none other than Colonel Gorlov, together with Colonel Yuryev, proposed to adopt a Smith & Wesson revolver. The firm was asked to make a number of changes to both the revolver and the cartridge - it was then that the gift sample of this revolver was tested by shooting by Grand Duke Alexei during his glorious hunt. One of the requirements for the new weapon was that its bullet would kill a horse from 50 meters. It turned out, however, that not only a horse, but also a bison could be killed from the new revolver, so the question of its lethality was immediately removed.

Russell Charles. Bison hunting

At the suggestion of the Grand Duke, the trigger guard was equipped with a concave "spur" for ease of shooting, so that he could even act as a "designer" of a new weapon for the Russian army. And ... his word eventually became the main thing in the decision to arm the imperial army with these revolvers or not.

Revolver "Smith and Wesson" chambered for the "Russian cartridge" of 10,67 mm. The third model, moreover, a soldier's, is not self-cocking. (Photo of the Royal Arsenal in Leeds)

Well, for the company "Smith & Wesson" the consequences of Alexei Alexandrovich's hunting became truly fateful. After all, the company produced for Russia more than 250 thousand of its revolvers of three models, which were successively replacing each other - in 1871, 1872 and 1880. (slightly different in details). The German company Ludwig Loewe & Co also made money on the Russian order, where about 90 thousand of them were manufactured, well, a lot of them were made in Tula at the Imperial Tula Arms Factory, which produced Smith and Wesson revolvers from 1886 to 1897! And who knows what kind of revolver the Russian army would have armed with in the last quarter of the XNUMXth century, if not for ... the successful hunt of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich, which he will remember for the rest of his life!

Yeah. Interesting article! Alexey Alexandrovich tasted the most pleasant things in life (and opium too).
The enemy of the people was this great prince. I hope that the author of the article will continue the story about him when writing an article about the Russian fleet during the Russian-Japanese war.

Was the "Russian model of Smith" produced in the "Double-action" version? As far as I know, they were all "single action". And the gradation for "officer" and "soldier" went already from the "Nagant".

Doctor of History Pyzhikov, in his research "on driving bears in cities and villages", unearthed interesting facts. It turns out that in 1866, during the reign of Alexander2, a ban on "driving bears" appeared; and why? , but because these creeps are torturing animals. And what were the real measures taken in accordance with this decree? And such: tame bears were simply shot.
This is for conversation: what were the traditions of the Romanovs regarding the nature of the state they ruled? Traditions were the same: that animals were shot, that people were kept like animals. And this was precisely with the arrival of the Romanovs, and before the Romanovs, the people lived differently and the attitude towards animals was also different.

There are many connections between the USA and the Republic of Ingushetia, for example the anthem is crazy, as it is very similar to the Russian folk song "Khasbulat the daring"

or on their day of independence, for some reason, they perform Tchaikovsky's overture with the built-in anthem of the Republic of Ingushetia of those years "God Save the Tsar" and all Americans begin to celebrate their main holiday loyally under Russian speech.
Apparently, the influence of RI on socialism was stronger than historians tell us. How all this happened, we do not know.

I was confused by only one thing - was it possible in 1903 to make such a clean musical recording? I had a chance to listen to old recordings, there was a rustle, crackling, overtones were not transmitted at all))) Although, of course, the opera and symphony were already recorded. There are even recordings of the great Enrico Caruso just in 1903, in my opinion, unimportant.

There are many connections between the USA and the Republic of Ingushetia, for example the anthem is crazy, as it is very similar to the Russian folk song "Khasbulat the daring"

"Khas-Bulat the daring" is a Russian romance. Verses by A. N. Ammosov, music by O. Kh. Agreneva-Slavyanskaya. The poem was first published November 16, 1858.
Composer John Stafford Smith wrote the music for the anthem in 1780

God Save the King / Queen is a patriotic song (1745), the anthem of Great Britain (not officially, but de facto), used at important state and public events in Great Britain. Royal (non-national) anthem of Norway - Kongesangen (sung in translation into Norwegian), the national anthem of Liechtenstein from 1920 to the present (with text by Jakob Josef Jauch), anthem of the Russian Empire in 1816-1833 (with text by Vasily Zhukovsky) ("The Prayer of the Russians"), the anthem of the German Empire (with the text of G. Haries) in 1871-1918.

              Norwegian does not exist.
In modern Norwegian, there are two languages, Bokmål and Nyunorsk.
There was also the so-called pidging language Russenorsk, a mixture of Russian and Norwegian, now this language is forgotten and no one remembers about it, except for linguists.

              https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Руссенорск

The official languages of Norway have different origins, Bokmål appeared in the early 20th century and was invented by Ivar Osen in 1917.
Well, New Norwegian is actually not new Norwegian, but old.

New Norwegian, or nynorsk, is based on the older dialects of Norwegian and Old Norse, although in recent decades the Nynorsk vocabulary has incorporated foreign words used in Bokmål. New Norwegian is native to 12% of the population, ie about 500 people, most of whom live in western Norway (Møre og Romsdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Hordaland and Rogaland), as well as in Oslo.

No wonder - the North was not affected by the war, and after it it received a workforce that was cheap as dirt - the Negroes. Yes, yes, it is blacks, because the politically correct term "African Americans" was invented only a hundred years later, as was political correctness itself. The Grand Duke was driven more and more across the northern states.
But in the South, things were much worse, as, indeed, in any area over which the war swept. For example, the once prosperous and largest port of the South, Savannah, did not look much better after the northerners than Stalingrad after the Germans. But the Germans were destroying a foreign country, and the northerners were destroying theirs.

Yes, almost the first special example of a status weapon ...

I'm very flattered. But in fairness, I want to note that the first status weapon was the sword, and later the sword. The firearms of their nobility, excellency, and lordship despised and hated. How, then, some barely trained stinker, who has an arquebus or pistol, can overwhelm a noble nobleman who learned to fence from his youthful nails, wearing armor at the cost of a medium-sized village, so that the nobleman would not even have time to get close to a sword strike.
Only much later, gentlemen officers recognized the usefulness of a short-barreled gun to shoot back drunk or rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr all the lower ranks, and still a status weapon in the army was a saber, and the navy dagger. And the revolver is for real self-defense, just in case, since there have been all sorts of cases, and with a saber, and even more so with a dagger, it won't hurt to wave a rifle with a bayonet or a club.
And the revolver became a status gun, perhaps, already under Soviet rule.

In terms of reloading - "Nagant" is a step back in comparison with "Smith", the British have all "Vebley" recharged in this way and there were no complaints. And on "Smith", if you did not open it with a fool, you could always pull out the spent cartridges one by one. And you try to reload the Nagant, pushing out the shells one by one with a ramrod. And during the battle? Until you shove at least one fresh cartridge, they will quickly chop you up with a saber, and without any firearms.

Tried it, and more than once. I've already lost half of the zinc in the shooting galleries. The occupation is rather dreary, but it is what it is for historical reasons. Extraction by the piece was one of the requirements in the competition in which Leon Nagan won, precisely because neither the officers nor the quartermasters in charge of the supply of cartridges to the active army liked the instant extraction of 6 S&W cartridges at once. Too many cartridges were lost, and there was always a shortage of cartridges in RI.

hi My friend Konstantin, in Nagan model 1895, this alternate knocking out of the casings is due to the very concept of this system (then the Nagan brothers "repented" and began to make their revolvers in a human way, without this worthless "patent self-expression"! winked ). request
As you know, in our Nagan (as well as in the sports revolver of Khaidurov TOZ-36, made on the basis of Naganov's "motives"), the drum shifts forward before firing, runs over the conical end of the barrel, being centered on it with the corresponding tapered notch.
And the slightly grooved muzzle of the cartridge case goes into the bore of the bullet entrance of the barrel bore, as if to "prevent the breakthrough of powder gases (but there is still a gas leak at this joint!)".
But on the muzzles of the spent cartridges, then it is clearly visible that the alignment of the drum chambers (especially in the combat Nagant, since in TOZ-36 the centering end face of the barrel is made with a double conical surface and, in general, was made more accurately, since the lead cylindrical bullet Vadkutter-Pyzherub sports revolving 7,62 mm cartridge V-1 was shellless, in contrast to the shell, with a blunted nose, the bullets of the combat Nagan cartridge) is not always exemplary and some chambers had mismatches!
With an increase in the shot, there is a height of the diameter of the bore of the bullet entrance and the part of the muzzle of the sleeve entering into it also swells more when fired than the diameter of the cartridge chambers in the drum.
And if they used a single extractor, automatic like the Smith-Wesson's or manual like the Colt's, for all 7 casings, it would jam tightly!
An automatic extractor would break down (a copier or a "cogwheel" would not be able to withstand the applied super-efforts), and a manual extractor would have to be pounded every time with all the foolishness with a heavy metal hammer to try to knock out all the spent cartridges at once! yes
And so, in turn, each cartridge case with a "blown" muzzle will be "guaranteed" to be knocked out and knocked out by strong blows of a small ramrod, albeit with difficulty, and with "such and such a mother"! wassat
They said that the Polish policemen, in the 20s and 30s, suffered like this with their Nagans, due to the use of reinforced revolving cartridges of the already "independent" Polish manufacture, with a higher maximum pressure of powder gases ?! what

I confirm. The cartridges enter the drum easily, like clockwork (however, why "how", I do not regret lubrication), and is also discharged almost under the influence of gravity. And in order to push out the spent cartridge case, the extractor often has to be pressed with all the foolishness. But this is the price of obturation, which seriously increases muzzle energy. According to Wikipedia, the condition of the competition was originally to stop the horse at a gallop, but in the end the horses were not harmed. We were satisfied that a 50 m bullet pierced 5 inch boards one after another, we decided that this should be enough for a horse lol .

The man put in charge of the entire fleet of the empire was interested only in women and booze all his life. The result is Tsushima.

From the memoirs of Alexander Mikhailovich. First - a conversation about sending the Second Squadron. Further - the personality of Alexei Alexandrovich:
Rozhestvensky, however, announced that he was ready to immediately go to Port Arthur and meet the Japanese face to face. His almost Nelsonian speech sounded comical in the mouth of a man who was entrusted with almost all power over our fleet. I reminded him that Russia has the right to expect something more substantial from its naval commanders than a willingness to go to the bottom.
“What can I do,” he exclaimed. “Public opinion must be satisfied. I know it. I am fully aware that we do not have the slightest chance of winning the fight against the Japanese.
“Why didn’t you think about it before when you made fun of the Mikado sailors?”
“I didn’t make fun,” objected Rozhdestvensky stubbornly. This is the maximum that you can expect from a person.
And this man with the psychology of a suicide was going to command our fleet! I was deeply shocked and, forgetting the well-known character traits of our dearest General-Admiral, went to Uncle Alexei. The date was rather comic in nature. All Mikado's armed forces on land and at sea could not embarrass Uncle Alexei's optimism. His motto was unchanged: "I don't give a damn about anything." How our "eagles" of the "yellow-faced monkeys" were supposed to teach a lesson remained a mystery to me. Having thus dealt with all these questions, he started talking about the latest news of the Riviera. What would he give to find himself in Monte Carlo. Ask questions: did I see Miss X and did I like Miss Y? Am I going to dine with him and remember the old? His chef invented a new method of preparing sterlet, which was the greatest achievement of the culinary art, etc.

The appointment of Rozhdestvensky is generally beyond comprehension.

He was strange in himself. During the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-78, he served on the steamer Vesta. The steamer was commanded by Nikolai Baranov, the designer of that very rifle for the fleet. After the battle of Vesta with the Turkish battleship, this event was considered heroic. The only one who later wrote a devastating article that, they say, "flight" - it was Rozhdestvensky. There, it almost didn't come to court with Baranov. In general, the future Tsushimovite was rough, and with conceit.
By the way, in that battle on the Vesta, a private (volunteer!) Stepan Karlovich Dzhevetsky, the future designer of submarines and torpedo tubes, took part. One of the submarines of his design was tested in Gatchina in the presence of Alexander III. Now there is a monument to her not far from the palace. drinks

It is written, of course, entertaining, but the author, apparently, was influenced by the work of Ryzhov, who is inclined to sacrifice the historical side of the issue for the sake of entertaining.
The visit of the Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich to the United States was not caused either by the prince's desire to hunt for buffalo, or by an attempt to tear him away from Sasha Zhukovskaya, the daughter of the poet Zhukovsky, with whom the Grand Duke was just having an affair that ended in the birth of his son Alexei.
It was a return visit, planned back in 1867, when the American squadron of Admiral David Farragut visited St. Petersburg.
On a return visit in 1871, a squadron under the command of Vice-Admiral KN Posiet departed for the United States, on which the Grand Duke was also present as a goodwill ambassador.
This was the first official friendly visit, in which a representative of the ruling dynasty took part, and he was supposed to demonstrate to the whole world the strength of Russian-American friendship and end with the signing of an agreement on a military alliance.
But thanks to the efforts of the Ambassador of the Russian Empire to the United States, Konstantin Gavrilovich Katakazi, who, instead of strengthening friendship, began to criticize the president's entourage, received diplomatic tension and the US demand that the ambassador be immediately recalled. Therefore, the meeting with the president lasted only an hour, and the prince had to "settle" the conflict.
As for hunting buffalo, then the versions are diametrically opposite. In any case, the book of the French historian Georges Blond "La grande aventure des migrateurs" says that General Phil Sheridan was the initiator of the hunt, and fifteen hundred bison were killed.

The biggest atrocity in Africa on my part is the promise to put his "Roujo" in the ass to one lover of "trophy hunting" from "Europa". By the way, referring to local blacks who accompanied the "Hunter", I realized that they fully support my opinion. So the incident was short and does not attract an article. True, then they still put up, but this is a standard booze, only in Africa. What is there to write.

There is a suspicion that the cause of enslavement is toxoplasmosis. Cats are one of the spreaders of the parasite (primary host, h.p.). The parasite itself changes the behavior of the secondary host - for example, mice are not afraid of cats. For the parasite, this plays into the hands, because due to the fact that the mouse is eaten, it will enter the cat's body where sexual reproduction will take place. A person also changes character and speculates, which is why they love the tailed mustache smile By the way, at home there is a blue Russian cat, two ordinary cats and a Rottweiler ...

Yes, that's for sure. I was here in August in Sergievka (the Leuchtenberg estate, between Peterhof and Martyshkino) decided to throw a fishing rod in a park pond. I found only one place where the depth is more than a meter - shallow! Threw it. The bite was wild - immediately dragged. Pecked .. rotan .. And immediately sucked almost to the ass. When I just couldn't pull the hook out of two, I spat. Well him. Really, it became a pity. recourse

It is purely logical to assume that both the Colt and Remington and the gunsmiths are worse, they all had to try to appease in k .. Either Alexey Alexandrovich turned out to be an expert in weapons. Or Gunius and Gorlov ts "unobtrusively" suggested: here is an interesting model

Gorlov chose this revolver and offered to take it into service, increasing the caliber. At his suggestion, the barrel latch and the drum retainer were changed. All other changes were made at the suggestion of the Russian representative at the Smith and Wesson plant, Captain Ordinets.
About the participation of the Grand Duke in this matter - a legend, no more (a little more tar).

Viktor Nikolaevich, you confirmed my assumption that Gorlov and Gunius turned out to be experts in small arms. We chose a promising model for that time

How could non-specialists be sent there? Gorlov is a member of the GAU Artillery Committee, colonel. Gunius - Secretary of the Weapons Commission, Captain. With all the costs and disadvantages of that time, fools were not sent on such business trips.

There is an interesting novel from the genre of alternative history, and it is called the Admiral General. The hero of the novel, a hit from modern managers, falls into the body of the Grand Duke and at the appropriate time, while doing what the Grand Duke should have done to raise Russia. Quite interesting, albeit controversial.
