Armor for the poor: BRDM-2MB "Bekas"

Small armored bird

The developer of the armored vehicle BRDM-2M "Bekas" is Alexey Butrimov, the founder of the Moscow region firm "B-Arms". The Federal Service for Intellectual Property issued a patent for a similar method of modernizing an armored car less than a year ago, in November 2019.

B-Arms is quite closely involved in military equipment: judging by the company's official website, there is even a T-72 modernization program in its portfolio. The buyers of such equipment are third world countries that are unable to purchase expensive and modern armored vehicles. Thus, four years ago, B-Arms prepared several dozen modernized reconnaissance armored vehicles for Laos, Kyrgyzstan and Serbia. In particular, 30 BRDM-2SM Strizh vehicles, which the Serbs equipped for service in reconnaissance companies, went to Belgrade free of charge. tank divisions. The recipe for modernizing a well-deserved armored car (production ended in 1989) is quite simple: replacing an outdated power plant, minor internal alterations, and local strengthening of the reservation.

The driver's workplace has not fundamentally changed. Source: bmpd.livejournal.com

The B-Arms did not dare to change the power structure of the armored hull. All the numerous users of the second series of the BRDM were not satisfied with the archaic for the 2st century embarkation and disembarkation of the crew due to the small number and size of hatches, as well as the low level of ventilation of the engine compartment. Among the minuses are also manual control of the armored turret, a low level of visibility, a small volume of the habitable compartment and an uneven bottom of the car, which seriously complicates the placement of the crew. That is why both in the "Strizh" and the more modern "Bekas" they removed the additional wheels located in the base, thereby making room for the landing. The jet propulsion unit was scrapped, but the BRDM-2 did not lose its ability to swim. Behind the arches, a hydrodynamic unit (guide flaps) is mounted, made "with the possibility of supplying a motor impulse to the car from the rotation of the wheels when the car is in the water." That is, in other words, the BRDM-2SM / MB will float due to the rotation of the wheels. This, of course, will seriously reduce the capabilities of the car afloat (speed no more than XNUMX km / h), but for potential customers this was not a priority. It is expected that most of the buyers will be from countries with hot climates - this is unequivocally hinted at by the sandy camouflage of the first Bekas.

Spectacular footage in a puddle. The BRDM-2 is now swimming badly - the water cannons were taken to the B-Arms. Source: bmpd.livejournal.com

Removing the insides of the car, arches of additional wheels and a water cannon, made it possible to free up more space, which was taken up for additional ammunition and space for the landing. In the sides there were hatches for entry / exit, equipped with liquid crystal screens. The images are displayed on them from cameras mounted in special enclosures outside. Such is the modern reading of the technology of sixty years ago.

In total, the BRDM-2MB accommodates five people: 3 crew members and 2 paratroopers. The developers are seriously talking about strengthening the mine protection of a light armored car. In particular, the authors redesigned the floor of the car, mounted additional protection outside, and covered the backs of the driver and commander with vertical sheets of armor. The engineers also took care of the explosion-proof seats for the crew and the landing, but not enough. On the one hand, they are attached through a shock-absorbing system to the ceiling and wall, and on the other, they do not protect the fighter's legs. Ideally, special footrests should be installed here, which generally isolate the feet from contact with the floor. This allows, in the event of a mine being detonated under the car, to protect the ankle from a fatal blow. However, all these tricks in terms of protection against IEDs are like a dead poultice: the BRDM is planted very low, its bottom is flat, its mass does not exceed 7,5 tons, and the crew with the landing party are located several tens of centimeters from the ground. In addition, judging by the photographs of the "Bekas", the side hatches do not have crossbar locks and are unable to protect the soldiers from excessive pressure leakage in the event of a nearby land mine exploding. At the moment, there is no information about the amount of explosives that the Bekas can withstand. Most likely, in order not to be disappointed, the developers did not conduct tests to undermine the BRDM-2MB.

Not to the Russian army

Depending on the wishes of the customer, the BRDM turret can be made completely remotely controlled, for which a hole is cut out in the armor to mount the aiming system. The tower, by the way, is borrowed from the BTR-80 and carries a 14,5 mm KPVT machine gun. The Bekas also received Ki-126 wheels from the family of Arzamas armored personnel carriers - this, according to the authors of the project, will simplify the interchangeability of combat vehicle units.

Source: bmpd.livejournal.com

Now about the armor. To enhance the protection of the BRDM-2, the developers used the time-tested spaced booking. In the case of a light armored vehicle, this is actually the only way to defend without a significant increase in the mass of armor. On average, the entire set of mounted armor can pull 800 kilograms. According to the developers, the Bekas's forehead can withstand a burst from KPVT from 300 meters, but, obviously, until at least one sheet of additional armor is ripped off the mountings. The sides must resist 7,62 mm and 12,7 mm calibers. But here, too, the authors saved money. Why is there no splinter lining on the car? Or are B-Arms confident that high-hardness armor will not emit a fragmentation field inside the vehicle? In general, the flaw is obvious, future customers should consider this option when contacting craftsmen near Moscow.

The GAZ-41 carburetor power plant was replaced with a YaMZ-534 136 hp diesel engine. from. Power eventually dropped by four horsepower, but torque was expected to rise. A characteristic feature of the modernized BRDM-2 is a removable locker at the stern, which plays the role of both additional protection for the engine and a container for transporting equipment. Depending on the version, the specific power of the BRDM-2MB varies from 18 to 20 liters. from. per ton. For comparison: for armored vehicles of the "Tiger" family, this parameter only starts from 26 hp. from. per ton. At the same time, the "Tiger" is also much better protected, although it is deprived of a rather ambiguous ability to swim. As can be seen from the above, there have been no major breakthroughs with the Bekas's mobility, although the mileage at one filling has increased to an impressive 1000-1500 kilometers.

Source: ru.motor1.com

History with "Bekas" in the media is presented as a successful upgrade to modern requirements for combat vehicles. This is certainly not the case. It is enough to compare it with a similar but lighter amphibious armored vehicle "Strela" from Arzamas, to understand which dinosaur they tried to restore in "B-Arms". Although the BRDM-2MB "Bekas" still has a plus, it has nothing to do with combat effectiveness. Now BRDM-2 is scattered across more than forty armies of the world with a circulation of many thousands. This whole armada requires modernization, and B-Arms specialists may well take on some of these orders. And this is foreign exchange earnings, additional jobs and high added value of the final product.

In the appendix to the Russian army, I really want to hope that the Ministry of Defense will not be interested in such crafts and in the very near future all BRDM-2 vehicles will be withdrawn from the state. And let those who cannot provide their soldiers with decent protection should use "Snipes".

And how is it outdated. Cars of the same type are flowing into the army of damned bourgeois. This is not a front-line technique, but, as its name suggests, the BRDM is a reconnaissance vehicle. Small, high permeability and biting if necessary. She has a flaw. Width. Narrower than the rest of the armor. If in one column they do not get into a rut, there have been explosions in Afghanistan for this very reason.

    - the author, I will probably disappoint you, but this BTR-80 borrowed the turret from the BRDM-2, like the BTR-70 and BTR-60PB
And in terms of uselessness, it is a reconnaissance and patrol vehicle, it is not intended to go on the attack and in its capacity it fully justifies itself hi

"This is a reconnaissance and patrol vehicle"
Was before modernization, but with the removal
additional wheels, allowing you to overcome a trench, ditch and other similar obstacles, became an armored car, which, of course, is inferior to the new Tiger. Now on such a BRDM it is good to patrol the roads, albeit bad ones, but it is bad to conduct reconnaissance off the roads.

Then it is necessary to put intelligence in the UAZ. The sense is the same as in this "paper" BRDM wassat ... But I think that intelligence officers are too valuable a category of military personnel that we need to really take care of. And if you put it in armor, then in one that resists the weapons of motorized infantry units of a potential enemy. And he has a 25-40 mm submachine gun per compartment, 50 mm in the future. Ideally, an antidote is also needed from ATURA. It is high time to admit that the armoring of the BTR-BRDM-MTLB does not meet modern requirements.

Its units are equipped, for example, with the M2A3 Bradley or Bxer infantry fighting vehicles, for which our 14,5mm bullet is like peas against the wall. Even Lithuania buys Bosers for its army. They only drive the Basmachs across the deserts in Hamers. If the idea comes to them to fight with us, they will use their entire armored arsenal. It is unlikely that a German or American general would send his troops without reliable armor. They will immediately be demoted to the ranks for an extra killed soldier. Only we, from more or less strong armies, cling to the equipment that protects the crew from 5.56-7,62 mm rifle range. One here joked, like, we will cover the losses of the unemployed. West armored its infantry vehicles from 30x165. And the weight of 7 tons suggests that the protection of this armored vehicle only from the Chinese can opener. If NATO switches to 6,5 mm caliber, then most likely even a foot soldier will be a real threat to the mess. I would not have sent my son to the war in such a machine (if I had asked for my opinion). I have a suspicion that our high command is not preparing for a war with NATO on a ground theater of operations, or is preparing, but does not consider it possible in the foreseeable future. Laser target designation equipment is possible. Reliable communication so that intelligence can be transmitted quickly. Or replace the tower with DUM from 12,7. The weight will decrease. Honestly, all this is disgusting to look at. Maybe the Tiger and others like him, due to the newest (and very expensive) armor, are in fact better protected than the BRDM-2 and BTR-60/70/80. But one glance at these machines is enough to understand which one is for combat and which one is for ranger-style pokatushki. The entire experience of the Great Patriotic War was invested in the armored hull of the BRDM and armored personnel carriers. Just against bullets, the rational angles of inclination of the armor work perfectly, sub-caliber bullets are not yet used in small arms. Futile attempts to increase the ability to withstand mine explosions (in-1, you can lay so much that the tank will explode, in-2, there are mines that hit combat vehicles on the side, and not in the bottom) only increase the height, visibility, as a result, the vulnerability of the vehicle ... Now you can't fit much into 8 tons. The engine and transmission must be changed, as this is the standard procedure for modernizing armored vehicles in the West. Armor - how it goes. Good buoyancy for a reconnaissance vehicle in Europe is just really needed. This armored car is not an armored personnel carrier. This is a reconnaissance vehicle. Two person crew + two scouts. And it is not at all a fact that the commander should stay in the car.

Strange modernization if you are serious about the name of the car. In my opinion, the way to modernize such vehicles should not be in increasing armor. The armor there is more than adequate for the tasks of this machine.
More important for such machines is noise reduction and increased cross-country ability. Good surveillance aids providing observation and driving both day and night. A radio intelligence complex based on an SDR radio station, with the help of which it is possible to detect radio signals in a wide range and timely transfer of information. Laser detection sensors. And an analogue of such a system as SPO-15. In case the enemy uses radars to control the area. The ability to shoot smoke grenades in both manual and automatic modes in any direction. Based on the readings of the laser sensors. Equip the armament with stabilization and an automatic retention system in the sight.

Only oh-oh-very incompetent people can disfigure a machine like that.
