New combat training center in Mulino
According to the vice-president of Rheinmetall Defense Electronics on ground-based simulators Michael Krivits, cited in the article by Rupert Pengelley "Work on the Russian brigade combat training center" in the magazine "Jane's International Defense Review", the development stage of the task and specifications for the center of combat training in Mulino was completed by the end of 2011 of the year, which allowed starting the detailed design of the center systems from the beginning of 2012 of the year, this phase will continue until the beginning of 2014 of the year. Construction of buildings and engineering facilities of the center was started in 2012 year and should be completed by June 2013 of the year, and construction of infrastructure by the end of 2013 of the year. The Russian center staff must pass the first stage of training in Germany in February-May 2013 of the year, after which the preparation stage should be carried out directly at the center in Russia in August-October of 2013. Commissioning of the center systems should start in June 2013, and the center will be completed in June 2014.
Although the center in Mulino will not be a direct copy of the GüZ center of the German Bundeswehr in Altenmarkt, built and operated by Rheinmetall from 2001, its systems and bilateral training elements will be “very similar,” according to Crivitz. Currently, Rheinmetall Defense Electronics is working closely with the Russian Land Forces to determine their specific training requirements and needs. The German company is responsible for the development and supply of communications infrastructure, training battles, as well as laser tactical engagement simulation (TES) laser systems.
The facilities being built at the center in Mulino include a camp for the accommodation of a brigade that arrived for training; exercise control complex (exercise control - EXCON); laser simulator warehouse and assembly shop (TES); actually training and imitation complex; service complex; headquarters and complex management center; also three training facilities for working out combat operations in urban environments (military operations in urban terrain - MOUT).
The area of the direct combat training ground for conducting bilateral exercises should be about 200 square. km, and it should be equipped with a Tetra standard communication network supplied by the Austrian company Frequentis. The Rheinmetall group supplies laser simulators in a set designed for the simultaneous participation of more than 1000 exercise participants (reinforced battalion tactical group members), as well as potential enemy forces (OPFOR) up to the battalion. In addition to training in maneuverable combat operations and actions in urban environments, the center will be able to conduct other elements of combined arms combat, such as crossing the river, building bridges and providing air defense.
In total, the new training center in Mulino will provide training for up to 30 thousands of servicemen a year. Each brigade can go through several stages of training at different levels - from small units to battalions and brigade levels, with conducting exercises with simulators and live firing - with up to several weeks. Upon completion of the training cycle, final exercises will be carried out to ensure uniformity of training and verification of its level. In addition, brigade commanders can also be trained at the center using a combination of staff, field and simulation training facilities.
