Bundeswehr switches to a new machine

The Bundeswehr is rightly considered one of the largest armies in Europe. The total number of military personnel in Germany, as of June 2020, was estimated at 185 thousand people. The size of the armed forces is of great importance when the army decides to switch to new models of small arms weapons... It is on such a step that the German military are currently taking, who have chosen a new main machine gun for their armed forces. The upcoming rearmament is significant, since for the first time in decades, the main supplier of automatic weapons for the Bundeswehr will not be Heckler & Koch, but Haenel from the small town of Suhl in Thuringia. For connoisseurs of the arms world, this company is known primarily for its cooperation with the famous German designer of firearms Hugo Schmeisser.

The Bundeswehr buys 120 thousand new machines

According to the German media, CG Haenel won the tender for the supply of new machines for the Bundeswehr. It should be noted that this is the first time the company has won such a large government contract. We have not followed the financial performance of Haenel from the small town of Suhl, but now we can safely say that the financial position of this company in the near future will be healthy. It is already known that the company will supply the German armed forces with 120 thousand Haenel MK-556 assault rifles and components for them. The total value of the transaction is estimated at 245 million euros. The fact that it was the Haenel company that won the tender for the supply of 120 thousand machine guns, the German Defense Ministry announced on September 15.

It is worth noting that the Bundeswehr announced a competition for a new assault rifle in the spring of 2017. In the same year, the Haenel MK-556 assault rifle (MK is short for Maschinenkarabiner) was first shown to the general public. As you might guess from the name, the new machine gun was created for the main NATO ammunition 5,56x45 mm. The tender itself has been held in recent years, the process of testing and refinement of weapons has continued over the past three years.

At the same time, CG Haenel has already officially commented on the decision of the German Ministry of Defense of September 15, 2020 to choose the MK-556 assault rifle. The company emphasizes that hard work over the past years has allowed the Haenel model to defeat well-known German and international competitors who took part in the tender for the supply of a new assault rifle for the German armed forces. The company notes that the MK-556 assault rifle best meets the requirements of the Bundeswehr Procurement Office. This model won on the basis of field tests, overall efficiency and economic considerations. Haenel emphasizes the fact that the new MK-556 assault rifle is 90 percent made in Germany in the economic region of South Thuringia.

According to media reports, the Haenel assault rifle was "slightly better" and cheaper than the upgraded versions of the G36 assault rifle from Heckler & Koch. The latter has been in service with the Bundeswehr since the mid-1990s. Specifically, with this model of automatic weapons in the German army, relations did not work out. A wave of criticism of the assault rifle rose in 2012, when publications began to appear in the media that the G36's shooting accuracy decreases in high ambient temperatures and during intense combat. These publications were based on the experience of German soldiers who served in Afghanistan as part of the NATO mission. Heckler & Koch rejected claims to weapons, but in 2015 the Bundeswehr still decided to change the main machine gun.

Haenel won the battle of David and Goliath

The contract for the supply of 120 thousand MK-556 assault rifles looks very large for modern European realities. Experts knowingly compare the unfolding before our eyes history with a biblical story in which David defeated Goliath. The comparison suggests itself, given that over the past decades, the main supplier of automatic weapons for the Bundeswehr has been Heckler & Koch from Baden-Württemberg. Heckler & Koch is now not just legendary, but also a very successful company. Products under the HK brand are widely represented in all countries of the world, while the company has its own branches and divisions in the USA, Great Britain and France. The company from Baden-Württemberg has been supplying automatic weapons to the Bundeswehr since 1959. Against this background, the victory of a small, little-known company Haenel in a very large competition looks even more interesting.

In fact, for a long time, CG Haenel's main asset has been its past. The company's revenue is at least 30 times lower than that of Heckler & Koch. At the same time, Haenel is a company with a richer history. If Heckler & Koch was founded in the early post-war years, in 1949, then the Haenel company dates back to the middle of the 1840th century. The date of foundation of the Haenel company, which initially specialized in the production of not only small arms, but also bicycles, is considered to be XNUMX.

The specialists of this company from South Thuringia have been working on the creation of firearms for 180 years, having accumulated a wealth of experience during this time. Today the company produces both civilian weapons and works with government customers in the person of law enforcement agencies. In addition to automatic weapons, the company produces hunting rifles and sniper rifles. At the same time, it was the models of automatic weapons that brought the greatest fame to the company. Haenel has gone down in history forever as the company that created and produced the Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle (known as the StG 44 and MP44) during the Second World War. The creator of this well-proven weapon on the battlefield was the famous German gunsmith designer Hugo Schmeisser.

True, this was the last truly high-profile success of the Haenel company. After the war, most of the company's equipment was exported to the USSR, where designer Hugo Schmeisser, who worked in Izhevsk until 1952, also went. As you might guess, the enterprise ended up on the territory of the GDR and for a long time was engaged in the production of only pneumatic and hunting weapons.

The second life for the company began already in the 2008st century, when it was recreated under its historical name in 2007. CG Haenel is now part of the Merkel group of companies, which has been owned since XNUMX by Caracal LLC from the United Arab Emirates. It was the significant Arab investment that got the Haenel company back on its feet, effectively restarting its production. Russian experts have already expressed their opinion that it was their Arab owners who were ready to dump and reduce the price of the machine in order to enter the German market, to win the tender for the supply of new machines to the Bundeswehr company Haenel. Good modern relations between Germany and the UAE are also noted. So the deal may have some geopolitical context. The fact that the Bundeswehr will to some extent depend on a state-owned company from the Persian Gulf is called in Germany, if not a sensation, then a truly unprecedented event.

With the arrival of the Arab capital, CG Haenel again launched a full-fledged production of sporting, hunting and army small arms. Before the success with the new MK-556 assault rifle, the company had already managed to conclude several contracts with the law enforcement agencies of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Bundeswehr. In particular, Haenel limitedly supplied the police units with a semi-automatic CR 223 rifle, and for the army a Haenel G29 sniper rifle chambered for a fairly powerful .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge (8,6x70 mm). The G29 sniper rifle was put into service back in 2016. These were not bulk shipments. The company's staff in Suhl is very small: according to the official website of the company, it has only 120 employees. In this regard, the German newspaper Deutsche Welle believes that to fulfill the contract for the supply of 120 thousand machines to the Bundeswehr, the help of the parent holding from the UAE and its production facilities may be needed.

What is known about the MK-556?

The new Haenel MK-556 assault rifle is built on the ergonomic and well-proven AR-15 architecture, well-known in the arms world, which is unmistakably guessed in the external appearance of the weapon. This model uses a short-stroke gas-operated automation and an adjustable gas chamber. A distinctive feature of the model is that it is initially available with a different set of barrels: 16, 14,5, 12,5 and 10,5 inches. The semi-automatic model Haenel CR 15 was built on the same base AR-223, which was already used to a limited extent by the German police. In this regard, the MK-556 is a fully automatic and updated version of the CR-223.

Depending on the length of the barrel, the maximum length of the machine gun, as well as the weight of the weapon, will change. For example, a model with a 16-inch barrel (408 mm) will have a maximum length of 923 mm, and the weight of the machine without cartridges will be 3,6 kg. At the same time, an assault rifle with a barrel length of 10,5 inches (226 mm) will be noticeably more compact. Its maximum length is 781 mm and its weight is 3,35 kg. All MK-556 models will be equipped with 30-round box magazines. If necessary, other stores of the NATO standard STANAG, including drum ones, can be used.

Like all models of modern small arms, the new German machine gun is friends with Picatinny rails and allows the installation of a wide variety of sights. Also MK-556 is equipped with a telescopic 6-position stock, which can be easily adjusted in length. In general, this is a standard unremarkable model of automatic small arms chambered for a 5,56 mm cartridge, built on the basis of the AR-15. A sufficient number of such models are presented in the world today. A solid weapon that does not claim any innovative laurels and breakthrough solutions.

MK-556 is an almost complete clone of the AR-15.

You are wrong - instead of the classic AR-15 scheme with the direct effect of powder gases on the bolt carrier, the automation works using a gas piston, i.e. a completely different system turns out.
Where did you get that Haenel belongs to the UAE? I did not find it. For that I found a trace. data: -

But even if you're right and the company is owned by the UAE, that makes a difference. Located in Germany, the production and designers are German. The fact that the Arabs are investing money, so what.

There the tube was torn out and a needle and a spring from a ballpoint pen were put in its place. Now the frame is thrown not by a breath of gas, but by poking the spoke (the frame, perhaps, is a little lighter, by the weight of the spoke).

With regards to the locking system, the Ge 36 uses a modified AR18 scheme rather than the AR15, both of which are an evolution of the Lewis locking system, before the AR15 a similar turning method was used in the FG42. Stoner himself considered the AP18 to be a much better design than the AR15.

In a special sports discipline, this weapon is used with the latter quarter of the XIX century and is designed for accurate target shooting at a distance of up to 100 m, depending on the caliber.

The targets are painted wooden circles marked with rings with a central 40 mm diameter highlighted in black. On targets, paint marks each hit. Hunting clubs in different countries keep entire collections of such targets, signed by shooters and collected for decades. They're not just shooters' attention. In Ferlach, Austria, I was told that a large part of the painted targets with traces of holes, collected in the old city shooting gallery, were taken out by the US military in the late 1940s. "

These publications were based on the experience of German soldiers who served in Afghanistan as part of the NATO mission. Heckler & Koch denied weapons claims

I wonder which machine gun does not lose its accuracy in such conditions.

The wave about the terrifying drop in accuracy and the massive jamming and mass death of servicemen due to this was raised by stupid journalists, then this wave was picked up by the parliamentary opposition, and away we go. All these articles had a very distant relationship to reality. In the same incident in Afghanistan, there simply could not be a situation where a jammed weapon would lead to death. It is enough to read the report, who is where and when. And the passage about the fact that, due to overheating, the soldiers shamelessly smeared, and could not kill a single mujahid, just beyond reason. Even testing aimed at drowning the G36 revealed that when firing 150 rounds for 20 minutes (this is the standard scenario) at 300 meters, only a 30% drop in accuracy when overheated. Let me remind you that according to the requirements of the Bundesphere of the nineties, the G36 was supposed to provide an accuracy of 4 MOA. That is, even taking an accuracy of 4 MOA (and in reality it is twice as good in modern G36 models) it was 36 cm by 300 meters, it became 47 cm. Where is the terrible problem here? And how much does the accuracy drop with the same shooting, for example, in the M4? Or a thesis about a constructively more intense heating than others, the question is how much faster, by 10%, by 100%? Nowhere are there words about it, it feels like they have again blown up the nonsense to the size of an elephant.

The problem with the G36 was different: its receiver was made of nylon filled with fiberglass, such a composite has a low thermal conductivity, any local overheating leads to warping. Plus an aiming bar spaced apart from the box. All this together, when the rifle was heated by solar radiation in the Afghan highlands and with additional heating of the G36 from intense shooting, led to accuracy plus or minus bast shoes.

By saving on the construction material of the box, "Heckler und Koch" dropped its reputation below the plinth and the competition of the Bundeswehr was naturally won by its competitor.

They put the barrel in g36 stupidly in plastic, and there is nothing to say, despite the fact that HK even offered the Bundeswehr a version with a normal barrel fit into the metal, they refused.

It was not their decision, but a warrior ... remember at what time it was born - the unification of germanium, the collapse of the Department of Internal Affairs and the USSR, and so on, etc. and g-11 had to be changed ...

G36 was accepted when the money was available, it seems that g3 was submitted for the competition under the cartridge 5,56, and if it was not (I don't remember well), then most likely they would have ordered it. The military could not choose such shit for themselves, they rather pushed it through, but again, later it was offered not a smoker, they refused. And, the Bundeswehr is the warriors. And when the USSR was falling apart, the Germans had a lot of money, and there was a lot of money before, when there was an alliance, and if it hadn't been, they would have found it because of the alliance, for example, from the Americans. So it's just a circus.

Uh ... you are so interesting ... "I don't know, but there was money, and if it hadn't been, then they would have found ... and if they hadn't, then there would have been a lot" and so on ... no, the German the warriors had no money! For after there was a reorganization of the army after the unification of the germaniums! There was a modernization of the mig-29, which are now flying in Poland and much more. There was a wave of immigrants from the USSR, the purchase of former Soviet property, albeit for loins .. That is why the g-11 program was closed ... and the g-3 under 5,56 did not work for technical reasons ... why was g-36 chosen, moreover, as far as read the manufacturer offered plastic at a higher price, but the military saved

G11 was closed due to the fact that it became clear that it would take a long time and costly to complete it, and the prospects were unclear. And g36 was made in the 90s, bought from the end. It was at the beginning of the 90s that the Germans had no money, it was in the 90s that NATO, seeing how the alliance collapsed, missed the chance to devour the social camp and Russia for a pittance and re-equip at the expense of the acquired funds in order to further rob the world, it’s in the 90s that the richer Americans could not give the Germans loans, since it is not a pity and it is not yet completely clear how the Russians are there, this rearmament with machine guns costs unrealistic sums, but like a couple of nuclear submarines costs.

In 2015, the Bundeswehr nevertheless decided to change the main machine gun.
This is their right. Their money. Their desire. We only have to closely monitor this choice and make appropriate conclusions, military specialists.

Well, a company that is part of the Merkel group of companies won a state tender in Germany. So what?

As far as I understand the subject, MK-556 has the following family tree AR-15 -> HK-416 -> SIG516 -> CAR 816 -> MK-556. Moreover, starting with SIG516, the changes are not fundamental, we can safely say that these are all microscopically improved clones of HK-416, there even one of the leading engineers of HK-416 was lured sequentially from one company to another, specifically with the aim of getting "the same as and the HK-416 is only better. " At the same time, HK-416 cannot be called a clone of AR-15, because the gas venting mechanism is fundamentally different, the genealogy of which comes from G36, which borrowed from AR-18.
However, specifically the MK-556 has a significant lag in barrel life compared to the HK-416. 15000 and 20000 shots, respectively. But this is not a constructive, but a technological difference.

The AR-18 has a more standard arrangement with a short stroke gas piston. The piston, made in the form of a glass, "put on" on the gas chamber branch pipe, has its own return spring.

This is exactly the kind of automation in MK 556

Relax, the gas engine 416th, the development of the 36th engine, does not have any glasses in it, but there is a system of self-adjustment and dumping the development forward.

Heckler & Koch hasn't had much luck in the past.
They successfully completed the Pentagon's order to replace the M4 with their improved
rifle HK-416. More reliable in terms of misfires and with the same precision.
The largest contract was expected. And the order came out - zilch ...
The Americans suddenly decided to radically change the cartridge by increasing the caliber.
And now they lost in their native Germany. crying

Technically, the difference between MK556 and XK416 is minimal. The same gas outlet system with a short stroke of the piston located above the barrel, locking - by turning the bolt, the same adjustable gas chamber. It seems to me that the only reason why they chose MK556 is PRICE. HK increases the value for everything they do purely because they have the H&K label on them. By the way, in the USA, on the civilian market, kits for converting the AP15 into a gas outlet system with a short piston stroke have proven themselves EXCELLENT. One is Adams Arms (with a regulated gas chamber) and the second is Osprey Defense (nothing is regulated there). By the way, there is a video when they kill with automatic fire AP15 from the Adam's Arms systems. The barrel bent from overheating before the gas piston system failed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XY8iNt064sE&t=452s By the way, after that Adams put himself a piston on his AP15 5.56x45 and his AP15 5.45x39. And I have no regrets. Considering the "dirty" gunpowder in the Volk, Tula, Medved and Barnaul cartridges, 250 bucks for these systems justified themselves. There were practically no misfires. Unfortunately, unlike Osprey Defense, the Adams Arms system does NOT work with 7.62x39. Rather, it works, but after a long file processing, while Adamz Arms immediately says that "you play at your own risk, we guarantee only 5.56 and 5.45". For example: put a lightweight bolt (Bolt carrier), drill a hole in the gas outlet in the barrel, play with the weight of the buffers and the force of the springs. He's still a crap. Especially considering that nothing is free. Only one lightweight shutter is worth, EMNIP 130 bucks guarantee that after installing this shutter 7.62x39 will not work either.

CG Haenel is now part of the Merkel group of companies, which has been owned by Caracal LLC from the United Arab Emirates since 2007.

Mmmm, what an interesting case. And then they ask where the Islamists are taking money from, but for example the Arabs pushed their khm-khm to the Germans, otherwise it is incomprehensible to pay the Arabs a little less in the homeland of National Socialism, the main thing is not HK, they could really support the domestic, the weapon is still the same the most. Although the Germans have that from whom the money will go, they have troops in the BV so as not to shoot and fly.
