"Hussars of Death" attack French cuirassiers. Hood. Giuseppe Rava

In a bloody saddle, a horse will carry me away,
Gentle green maple from the battle fire.
The hussar mentic is burning, wide open in the shoulders,
In the crimson yellow light, the light of the last ray.
Hussar ballad, 1962

Military affairs at the turn of the eras. Well, in our cycle about the military affairs of different eras, it came to the hussars. However, we have already talked about them here, including the Polish ones with "wings". But today we will begin our story with a description of the French hussars, participants in the Napoleonic Wars, many of whom, as it turned out, returned to Europe from the United States, where they fought again in the hussars against the British.

However, the first hussar regiments in France appeared shortly after the French Revolution of 1789, when the new republican government formed 1791 hussar regiments between 1795 and 13. For twenty years of war, the fate of all these regiments was more or less similar, however история it was the 7th hussar regiment that was very different from all the others.

This regiment was founded in 1792 in Compiegne by the decree of the Convention and was called the Hussar regiment de Lamotte. The following year, he became the 7th hussar and in 1794 became part of the army of General Pitegru, who fought against the Anglo-Dutch troops of the so-called First Coalition.

We are very lucky today. Thanks to photographs taken in the 50s of the 7th century, when the participants in the Napoleonic wars were still alive, we can see them with our own eyes, albeit aged, but alive and dressed in the uniforms they have preserved. For example, Monsieur Mayor, who served in the 1809th Hussar Regiment from 1815 to 12. On the chest is the medal of St. Helena, released on August 1857, XNUMX. All by that time the surviving veterans of the wars of the Great French Revolution and Napoleon received this. He wears the full uniform of a Napoleonic hussar, and a fur-trimmed cap with a high plume speaks of his belonging to the hussar elite

In that year, the cold came very early, hostilities were suspended, and the troops went to winter quarters, and the British troops returned to England altogether. Well, we were at war at that time. In early November, the river Baal froze over, separating the two armies. But then the French commander received news of a possible revolution in Amsterdam; and without hesitation gathered his strength and crossed Baal on the ice. The race against time has begun; it was necessary to prevent the enemy from organizing resistance in Holland. The light cavalry units had more work to do than the heavy cavalry, and here they had to work hard. On the night of January 11, 1795, the 7th Hussar Regiment arrived at the anchorage of the Dutch fleet in Texel and saw that the fleet was anchored and at the same time was frozen into the ice. The hussars galloped on the ice and, surrounding the ships, forced their crews to surrender. So the 7th Hussar Regiment of France became the only cavalry regiment that went down in the history of battles at sea.

Hussars of different countries
Quartermaster Monsieur Fabri served in the 1st Hussar Regiment, famous for his valor even among the brave Napoleonic hussars. From 1792 to 1809, this regiment won a number of brilliant victories, and at the end of the war, in 1815, suffered heavy losses at the Battle of Namur. On the chest of Monsieur Fabry is the medal of St. Elena

On September 20, 1806, during the war with Prussia, Napoleon formed a light cavalry brigade from the 5th and 7th hussar regiments, which then numbered 935 people, which he transferred under the command of General Lassalle, the most popular and "most hussar" of all French generals Napoleonic Wars. It was he who said: "The hussar who was not killed at 30 is not a hussar, but shit!", And proved this by the fact that he died at the age of 34 - he was killed in the battle of Wagram, leading the attack of his cavalrymen ...

Monsieur Dupont is also from the 1st XNUMXst Hussars. He wears a formal version of the uniform, embroidered with braid and with numerous buttons. The buttons on the trousers with their shape and color at that time often indicated belonging to a particular shelf, as well as the color of the cords on clothes. From the inside, hussar trousers were hemmed with leather, since ordinary fabric was quickly worn out from friction against the saddle and horse hair. A high plume on the hat indicates an officer's rank. Armed with a Mamluk saber, which means that he participated in Napoleon's Egyptian campaign

But before that, pursuing the Prussians, he and his hussars overcame 1150 km in 25 days, or on average they covered 50 km a day per day. Finally, at the head of 500 men, he captured the fortress of Stettin, the garrison of which consisted of 6000 men and 160 cannons. Napoleon then wrote to Murat, to whom Lassalle was directly subordinate: "If your hussars take the fortresses, then it remains for me to melt the heavy artillery and disband the engineers."

After the Russian campaign in 1807, the famous portrait of Lassalle was painted in the uniform of the 7th hussar regiment with general insignia on the sleeves; this was the very form in which he was killed at Wagram in 1809.

Here is this portrait of Lassalle by the artist Antoine-Jean Gros Army Museum, Paris

After the restoration of the First Empire in 1815, the 7th Hussar Regiment became the senior regiment in the Hussar Division of Colonel General de Hussars, which gave his cavalrymen the right to various privileges. But then he was still disbanded, as too loyal to the deposed emperor.

After being defeated by France in 1805, Austria could not recover from it for a long time, but in 1809, after an uprising against the French occupation forces in Spain and a national awakening in Germany, Austria nevertheless decided to start a war with Napoleon. Then the Prussian Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Brunswick entered into an alliance with the Austrians and assembled a detachment of infantry and cavalry, consisting of a thousand horse hussars and the same number of infantrymen. Due to the tragedy that befell his family (the death of his father, who fell on the battlefield) and his entire country, conquered by the enemy, the duke chose black for their uniforms and a skull with crossbones as an emblem for headdresses. By the way, this is where the name of this corps Schwarze Schar ("Black Gang"), or "Hussars of Death" came from. Equipment and weapons were purchased from the Austrian arsenals, and the hussar regiment had four squadrons full of squadrons and also a horse artillery battery of four guns.

"Hussar of Death" 1809 Fig. from the book: V. Vuksic, Z. Grbasic. Cavalry. The history of fighting elite 650BC - AD1914. L .: Cassell, 1994. P.187

As you know, the hostilities in 1809 ended with a new defeat for Austria, with which the duke, however, did not accept. He decided to fight his way with his troops to the Atlantic coast and sail from there to England. On its way stood the troops of Westphalia and the city of Halberstadt, which was defended by 3000 soldiers. However, at night, the Duke's troops managed to take the city gates, after which the surviving 500 people of the hussar regiment, commanded by Major Schroeder, burst into the main square of the city in the dark. The enemy reserve of several hundred people located there was forced to surrender, and the city, with the exception of a few centers of resistance, surrendered. After resting and having recruited several hundred people in the city, the duke arrived in his native Braunschweig two days later. However, numerous pursuers chased him, and the sent messengers managed to warn the French garrisons about the advance of his detachment. Nevertheless, in spite of everything, a week later, after several small skirmishes, the "Black Squad" of 1600 people still managed to reach the sea. With the help of various tricks, the hussars managed to lead the pursuers away from the landing site, so that they even had time to sell their horses before leaving. The Duke and his men boarded British ships and, after disembarking at Yarmouth and Grimsby, entered British service. The following year, they took part in an expedition to Spain with the British, Italian and Spanish troops under the command of John Murray and fought there bravely.

The Black Hussars remained in British service until mid-1815. However, to participate in the "Hundred Days" campaign, during which Napoleon was already completely defeated, the duke managed to assemble another regiment of "black hussars" numbering 730 people. So soon, under his command, there were already two hussar regiments dressed in a very characteristic uniform.

Well, now we will go overseas again and see how things were with the cavalry and all the same hussars there. And “there” it was like this: The War of Independence ended, the French hussars sailed away, but new… new ones were not brought there. Moreover, Congress left only 100 soldiers in the army, because the United States did not need more then! True, it soon became clear that in such a number the American army could not even fight the Indians, and its number was increased to 3000 people. The cavalry of the young country was dragoon, wore Tartlon helmets trimmed with bear fur on the crown, and even with a turban in the color of the squadron, of which there were only ... four! Well, in 1802, the cavalry in the US Army was canceled altogether!

Then the war with England began in 1812, and the cavalry was again needed. Dragoon, again in helmets with a crest and tail, but in uniforms embroidered with cords with "Hungarian knots", which gave her a seductive hussar look. But the war ended, the cavalry was canceled again, and for as long as 20 years! Border patrolling was entrusted to militia formations of mounted rangers. They were hired to serve for a year. They were paid one dollar a day (a huge sum for that time!), But they did not differ in discipline or combat effectiveness. Well, of course, they didn't wear any uniform either.

Hall's flintlock breech-loading rifle, model 1833, which was in service with the American Dragoon cavalry: caliber .58 (14,3 mm). The photo below shows the shutter device

Then the cavalry was again needed, and in 1833 the American Dragoon regiment was created again, in which there were 600 people. They received downright chic uniforms with an abundance of gold embroidery and high, like those of a hussar, shako with a peak and a sultan, and double yellow stripes on their trousers. On the shoulders of privates and officers were epaulettes, however, with a fringe, only the officers. The uniforms were dark blue (the trumpeters had red!), The trousers were sky blue. The ceremonial uniform was especially beautiful, and the regiment, fighting the Osage and Kiowa Indians, used it as a fighting one and with success: the simple-minded Indians (Osage, for example), amazed by the appearance of the Americans, immediately agreed to make peace only after seeing them!

Dress uniform of the American dragoon regiment of 1833-1851: 1 - officer, 2 - bugler, 3 - sergeant (two stripes downward on the sleeve) and ordinary dragoons. Figure: L. and F. Funkenov

The American cavalry looked about the same at the beginning of 1861, and then the Americans had enough cavalry. But after Bull Run, the first battle of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln drafted half a million volunteers into the army, including the cavalry. The federal government's ambitious plan to equip and train such a large number of people began to pay off within two years.

A very funny photo: the Aston pistol, model 1842, caliber .54 (13,7 mm) - the first American capsule pistol, and below, for comparison, a revolver of caliber .31 (7,8 mm) Colt-Pocket model 1849 of the year

At the beginning of the war, the Union army could count on six regular cavalry regiments, but by the end of 1861 there were already 82. The following year, the Union had 60 soldiers, and almost 000 horses were purchased for the army. Since the regiments were formed in cities, counties or states loyal to Washington, they were named after these places: the 300st New York Cavalry Regiment, the 000th Ohio Cavalry Regiment, and so on. All allied regiments were then called simply cavalry, since when comparing them with similar European units, it would be easy for us to notice that they all performed the functions of dragoons. That is, they had to fight both on foot and on horseback.

During the Seminole Wars, the US Army also tested the first Colt ten-shot drum rifles produced in 1837-1841: Colt Paterson .69 caliber (17,5 mm) and Colt Paterson # 2, model 1838, caliber .44 (10,9 , XNUMX mm) with hidden trigger - pictured

Drum and ring for cocking the hammer and simultaneously turning the drum

By the end of 1863, both sides began to "lose momentum," and the war for the volunteers began to lose its appeal. In New Jersey, authorities decided to make cavalry recruitment more interesting and challenging, and posters were posted throughout the state that read “Horse and sword in hand” advertising recruitment to the US 1st Hussars. People are rather stupid, and the chance to become a hussar instead of a regular cavalryman soon provided the regiment with the necessary number of people. A beautiful uniform was sewn for them, similar to the Austrian hussar, and the state spared no expense for their equipment and weapons. In early 1864, the regiment, fully equipped in horse ranks, marched through Washington, and, as was the custom at the time, President Lincoln inspected it in front of the White House. His appearance in hussar uniform attracted the attention of the press, and reproductions of photographs appeared in all newspapers. In the army list, he was listed as the 3rd Volunteer Cavalry Regiment of New Jersey, and the number "3" was embroidered in a wreath on their caps, but they called him "the first hussar." However, it remained in the history of the American cavalry as the only regiment with the name of the hussar, and because of its rich form, its cavalrymen received the nickname "butterflies".

On September 13, 1864, at the Berryville Road, the regiment's hussars defeated a large force of Confederate cavalry and forced the 8th South Carolina Infantry Regiment to surrender, along with the banners and the commander. They also fought at Appomattox, Cedar Creek and Five Forks.

Colt revolvers at this time had already found their way into the army. Here is one of the popular early examples of this weapons - "Colt Paterson" No. 5, "holster model", caliber .36 (9,6 mm). Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

"Colt Paterson", "belt model" No. 3, caliber .31 (7,7 mm). Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

These "hussars" did not fight the Indians. The severity of the Indian wars fell on the shoulders of the same dragoon cavalry. But we will talk about this in the next article.

In 1812, 6 of the 12 hussar regiments that Napoleon had at that time took part in the invasion of Russia (the rest of the French hussars fought in Spain at that time). These were the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th regiments; all of them, except for the 11th hussar, attached to the 3rd infantry corps of Marshal Ney, were part of the reserve cavalry corps subordinate to Marshal Murat.
Each hussar regiment consisted of four squadrons, and a squadron consisted of two companies of 125 men each; thus, the number of the regiment was 1000 hussars. All companies of the regiment (except the 1st) were called central, and the 1st company was called elite. It was a special, selected company, to which only skilled soldiers with great combat experience who had distinguished themselves more than once in battles were appointed. The elite companies were the commander's reserve and the main striking force of the hussar regiments. The veterans of the elite companies outwardly differed from the rest of the hussars in that they wore not a shako, but bear hats with a slab and a red sultan, which were the subject of their special pride. Sultans on shakos and bear hats were used in parades and other solemn occasions; in the campaign against the sultans, they put on a protective cover or even took them off. All French hussars wore uniforms traditional for this kind of troops: multi-colored dolmans, fur mentics, light boots, chakchirs (tight pants), richly embroidered with gilded or silver (depending on the color of the regiment) cords.

(Note: in various sources and on tablets, the collar and cuffs of the 6th hussar are given both red and blue)

Regimental coloring of the 7th hussar:

Doloman and the mentic are dark green; chakchirs, collar, cuffs - scarlet; the instrument metal is white, the cords are white (according to the regulations, in fact, many hussars of the 8th Regiment wore dark red cords).

Regimental coloring of the 9th hussar:
Doloman - scarlet; mentik, chakchirs, collar, cuffs - blue; instrument metal and cords are yellow.

Regimental coloring of the 11th hussar:

The 11th Hussar was the only regiment in which the mentics of the privates were trimmed with white fur. The elite company also wore not brown, but white bear hats.

And, most likely, there will be more about the hussars. We are currently in correspondence with the Hermitage about photographs. And there you will see how it will turn. But you made gorgeous additions that I personally could not have done.

I will try to bridge the gap between two articles by V. Shpakovsky, yesterday, about food and today, about hussars.
In the article about the hussars there are 2 photos, as the author writes in the 50s of the XIX century, i.e. on the photo of a man 55+ years old (this is the minimum).
I dare to suggest that the uniform was not sewn on the occasion of the "ceremonial" photo, but this is the very form in which these gentlemen spent their young years.
This is what “right” products, right lifestyle and ecological environment mean.

The shape is really original, but historians agree that the tailors adjusted it for the photo, since the figures of the veterans have changed for more than forty years.
The veterans in the photo are 70-80 years old, since the photo is not earlier than 1857, when Medaille de Sainte-Helene was established, which is available to all veterans. The most realistic date of the photo is May 5, 1858.
The author of the photo is unknown. The originals, of course, are not colored.

Not a fact. It could well be 60 years old. The medal was given to all who were enrolled in the army until 1815 inclusive. Taking into account that in recent years Napoleon recruited frank children of 18 years old (1797 or so), then by 1857 they were 60. Moreover, these "young" should have been the majority of the survivors. The person in the photo obviously does not look like a 70/80 year old. If the photo is not naturally retouched.
As for the shape, most likely a reproduction. It is unlikely that 40+ years has been preserved in such a good condition.

A hooligan. Ladies meet a hussar.

Aleksey, if you remember, after the occupation of Paris in 1814, a whole selection of pictures was published depicting French ladies arm in arm ... with the Cossacks! drinks

The artist depicted numerous visitors to the most famous place in Paris, about which most of the Russian memoirists wrote. Household sketches of the famous palace were left by A. D. Chertkov: “In the Palais-Royal, merchants, restaurant owners and others pay 3000 francs for a room in the arcade ... on the third floor there is a gathering of public girls, on the second - a game of roulette, on the mezzanine - loan office, on the ground floor there is a weapons workshop. This house is a detailed and true picture of what rampant passions lead to. " A visit to the Palais Royal and close communication with the "ladies" often ended badly. It is no coincidence that a woman selling condoms is standing next to the Cossacks.
        Or this:

Here is what A. Ya. Mirkovich wrote: “Women looked at the Life Cossacks with curiosity, but first from afar. They were afraid of them, believing that we are northern barbarians, and the Cossacks are completely wild, peeling off the skin from prisoners. However, having made sure that they were not at all animals, but on the contrary, gentle and courteous, they began to examine them more closely and, apparently, admired the beauty and costumes of our Don fellows ”.
Here is a selection of watercolors by Georg-Emmanuel Olitz about the Russian Cossacks in Paris in 1814. good

If I'm not mistaken, the action of the novel "Hard labor" is like -1905-1907.

Begins before RYAV, the main action ends in 1905, not counting the finale. The morals of convicts and life on the island, I think, Valentin Savvich largely took from Doroshevich.
And here is one character from the life of Sakhalin at that time. In 1879 Warrant Officer Landsberg, the hero of the Turkestan campaigns and the Russian-Turkish war, stabbed the Petersburg usurer Vlasov to death, and not one, but with a maid.
Landsberg decided to get married. And since before that he borrowed from Vlasov, either he was afraid that he would disgrace him, or he needed money. Vlasov, on the other hand, trusted his future killer very much.
In general, the warrant officer stabbed the moneylender and the unnecessary witness who turned up inappropriately. He was arrested. Further - a copy from the article:
In court, Karl was silent, immediately admitted his guilt. One can only guess what he experienced when the prosecutor opened the envelope and read Vlasov's letter to Landsberg: "My dear, Carlos, accept my wedding congratulations and my gift ...". "Birobidzhan Cossacks" today has become an ironic proverb in the tongues. But, probably, few people imagine how many glorious Cossack families had Jewish roots. The cantonists who had served 12-20 years of service, experienced in military affairs, were eagerly accepted into the Cossacks. These are Rubies, Isakovs, Borisovs, Mayorovs, Evreinovs, Mirnye and many others. etc. Naturally, the founders of these Cossack families were ethnic Jews who forcibly adopted Orthodoxy in childhood, for a person of the Jewish faith in tsarist Russia could not be a Cossack.
In the ranks of the TKV were not only ordinary Cossacks, but also generals - the descendants of the cantonists. These are Lieutenant General M.I. Yadov, Major General S.S.Baranovsky.
Ivan Dmitrievich Volzhensky did not manage to become a general - he was killed on August 22, 1832, but the ataman of the Greben line, the colonel of the most titled Cossack regiment in RI, became a legend of the Terek Cossacks.

                  From Chervlennaya on alarm
                  Grebenskaya rushes the field.
                  Rides, rushes like a storm
                  I rode to Gudermes,
Where is Kazi-Mulla with the horde
Ten thousand were waiting for him.
The regiment did not flinch upon seeing
                  This power is before you.
The sabers took out and raced
To fight a mortal with that horde.
A coward won't be born here in the mountains
                  All Caucasians are daredevils
But how to cut with sabers
There is no meaner than combers
                  Brave Volzhensky Colonel
                  Hit the horde first
And with the regiment he rushed about in it,
                  It’s like hell.
                  The horde trembled, fled
                  We rushed after her.
But an ambush awaited us there
                  Of those brave people.
                  Right, left bypassed
                  Our brave regiment Grebenskoy
                  Here Volzhensky was killed,
Here blood flowed like a river.
The regiment fought to the death
                  With that countless enemy.
                  The enemy parted from fear,
The path opened in front of the regiment.
The regiment rushed to the crossing,
                  What was behind the Terek.
There the soldiers shouted to us:
"Honor and glory to you, hurray!"

The anthem describes an episode of the 1832 summer campaign. On August 22 (new style) Kazi-Mulla Gazi Mahomet (1793-1832), the leader of the Murids, the first imam of Dagestan and Chechnya with 10000 detachment, made a demonstrative raid on the Russian fortress Suddennoy, which controls the crossing of the Terek, in order to ambush the Russian troops. To the aid of the garrison of the fortress, 5 hundred Cossacks of the Grebensky regiment were sent with two cannons. An unequal battle took place. But the Cossacks managed to break into the Sudden and close the crossing. The losses of the commanders amounted to 155 people (152 killed, including the regimental commander and 3 died of wounds) and both guns (one of them was then recaptured by the Cossacks on September 22, 1832). Losses of murids - 621 people.
For this battle the Grebensky regiment was awarded by the Emperor the "Golden staff to the regimental St. George's standard" and "Golden regimental trumpets"

Well, this would definitely not go to the Cossacks. Pension is decent, there is a house, a wife. Yes, the last three-year period. They promised to push our November call on 66th in May 69th, but the Ministry of Defense, in its great wisdom, decided to arrange a grandpugalovo in the form of large-scale exercises. Even the cadres from our Europe caught up, they had already seriously decided that they were being taken to the war, uncles for forty years with a lifig, I met them in the field, talked. So we were held back for another three months and ended up with a total of two years and nine months. But the reins were let go and we came off there like black - everything got away with.

Yes, no luck ... But we didn’t rot the youth, there was no "bullying" as such in the army, and in our regiment it was strictly, we ourselves, sergeants, looked after it. So no one cleaned their boots for the old men, the most "terrible" thing for the young was to hem a fresh collar for his commander, and on a park day everyone plowed the same way in their cars. What later got divorced in the army is just a mirror image of everything that happened in the country in general.

Then prussian duke Friedrich Wilhelm Braunschweig

I don’t know about you, but this phrase jarred me.
In short, the future "black duke" was the fourth son of the Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand and the English-Hanoverian princess Augusta. In connection with the serial number, the inheritance in his homeland did not threaten him, he could not devote himself to a spiritual career and go to a monastery, being a Protestant, and therefore joined the Prussian army, where he succeeded in service.
And then two things happened at once. Friedrich's father was mortally wounded in the Battle of Auerstadt, and his older brothers for health reasons were unable to bear the burden of power. And the "black duke" became ... nothing, since his inheritance was included in the kingdom of Westphalia, where Jerome Bonaparte became king. Then, of course, "King Eremu" (the nickname Jerome in the Russian army) was driven away, but only the son of Friedrich Wilhelm had a chance to ascend the throne, since he himself died three days before Waterloo.
In general, Karl Friedrich from the glorious family of Welfs, if Prussian, then a general, and if a duke, then Brauschweig.
