Latvian President: Baltic republics should head for closer integration
63
The President of Latvia, Andris Berzins, stated that Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are too small states in order to survive separately from each other in the long term. Therefore, the three Baltic republics need to develop as close cooperation as possible, Berzins said in an interview with the TV program “New Week” of the LTV channel. “If we want to survive in the modern world, we need to unite efforts,” the president concluded.
Arguing about the future of the Baltic region, the head of state said: “In my general opinion, each of us is too small to survive in the long term. If we do not find a way to get closer over the next ten years, none of these countries "They will simply dissolve because we are too small. We need to act on that basis." Berzins promised: “I will try to do everything from the point of view of Latvia’s interests, so that we can be together and keep moving forward. Estonia has managed to establish cooperation with Finland and learn from its experience in various fields. Latvia and Lithuania have been through clashes during their state formation business interests, and the business was set higher than the state. But now we have grown. "
It should be noted that the option of creating one "superstate" on the basis of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia has been debated by the elites of these republics since the 30 of the last century - because, individually, they are too insignificant players on the world stage. The current performance of Berzins is quite in line with similar views.
