President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin assigned Maria Zakharova the highest diplomatic rank. Thus, he praised her work as an official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The presidential decree on assigning the diplomatic rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Maria Zakharova was published today on the official website of legal information.
Prior to this, only two women in Russia were conferred such honor - Valentina Matvienko and Eleonora Mitrofanova (head of the Federal Agency for CIS Affairs and compatriots living abroad).
The status of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary is the highest rank that can be assigned to Russian diplomats. This is regulated by the Law on the Specifics of Passing the Federal State Civil Service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since 2015, Maria Zakharova has been the head of the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, and in 2017 she received the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, which she possessed to this day.
In addition to Zakharova, on the same day, nine other Russian diplomats were given the highest diplomatic rank.
Last month, she (Maria Zakharova) was awarded the Order of Honor. The same award was then received by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.
