American F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters will receive new radar with AFAR

Installing the APG-83 SABR radar on the F-16 fighter

The U.S. Air Force has begun to equip the F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters with the latest radar systems with active phased array antenna (AFAR). The contract for the organization of production was received by Northrop Grumman. This was reported by the press service of the US Department of Defense.

Within the framework of the launched program, the US Air Force will receive 372 F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters with installed radar with AFAR. The United States Air Force ordered Northrop Grumman Corporation to use APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) radars. The re-equipment of the aircraft should end by 2027.

Northrop Grumman was awarded a contract worth $ 1,008 billion to organize the production of 372 radar with AFAR for F-16 fighters of the US Air Force. Work under the agreement should be completed by May 2027

The Pentagon said in a statement.

For the first time, the equipment of F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters with a new radar with AFAR became known in 2017. Then the US Department of Defense intended to conclude a contract with Northrop Grumman for the installation of APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) on fighter radars. Initially, it was about 72 F-16 fighters of the US National Guard, as well as the possible installation of new radars on the new F-16 Viper modification.

The F-16 is a fourth-generation multi-functional lightweight fighter. He entered service with the U.S. Air Force in 1979 and is today one of the most advanced combat vehicles. According to the World Air Forces 2020 handbook, the U.S. Air Force has 790 fighters of this type in service.

Either they follow us, or we take an example from them.
Our SU-35 and MIG-35 are the same old wine (old - in the sense of aged and wonderful) in new furs.
We take new "devices" (which we will not tell you about) and - wow!
The devices fly - higher, further, faster!
And we spit your penguins on the propeller!

Is it on F-16 that Tom Cruise does his new film - Cobra Pugacheva? Or is there another plane in the movie? Can his glider do this?

Are you betting that the video is not a legacy Hornet? Or do you confuse the time period of the original film and the submitted clip recourse

... or is this another nail in the F-35 coffin. In 2017 they wanted to upgrade 72 F-16s, now, in 2019 - 372. In two years, such a jump! Although, it was originally planned that the 35th would replace both the F-16 and F-18 in the fleet.

This becomes serious if the new F-16 radar (approx. 790 pcs.) Has characteristics similar to the Russian N035 Irbis radar (on the Su-35, 70 pcs.), Which detects 1 m2 from 300 km, and 0,01 m2 from 90 km

Ok, even taking into account the magic of American physics, it is not possible to shove the Irbis level radar into Falcon ... well, if there are only 2 of them, and it is better to weld 3 pieces together - then there is enough space and energy for it .... it's like news about the appearance of a new 1,33 turbo engine in Arkan to start worrying that it will overtake Tahoe with 6,2 :)))

as well as the possible installation of new radars on a new modification of the F-16 Viper.

The F16 Block 70/72 originally comes with AN / APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR). And this radar itself is built on AFAR technology - SABR is a multi-function active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.

About 10 years ago, when the AFAR was just beginning to be discussed, our experts said that this miracle could ruin the country's economy and never receive mass repayment, then there was talk that our PFAR was no worse, now F 16 is old , now we read - we listen - we think - maybe - we will wait still?

        20 December 2019 15: 34
Why not? If we have a plane (Su-35S) in which the AFAR covers the AFAR sheep on the F-16 (and MiG-35) like a bull and is noticeably more powerful than the AFAR on the F-22 and -35, then is it worth cutting AFAR right now? Therefore, the MiG-35 with AFAR is not needed, and without it - all the more. Better to do the Su-35S. For the future, on the Su-57, there should be an AFAR of course. Innovation for the sake of innovation is not needed ...

It's not just about power. AFAR can work simultaneously
in several modes. It’s like several radars in one building.
One group of elements can scan the earth, the other follow
behind the situation in the air, the third - to launch an explosive rocket, the fourth - to create
          EW interference.

It turns out at $ 2,7 million per piece.
in 2010, our beetle manufacturer estimates at 3,5-4 million per piece. It’s cheaper for Americans, while this radar has a radius of up to 370 km, a viewing angle of 60 degrees, we will have up to 200, a viewing angle of 90 degrees
If all the characteristics are true, then we lose to the net in range, but there is a big advantage in the review.
