The Polish army began to receive modernized T-72M1 tanks
The Polish army received the first batch of modernized tanks T-72. As transmits "Warspot" with reference to defense24.pl, representatives of the Polish company BUMAR-ŁABĘDY transferred the first eight MBT T-72М1 to the troops.
Plans for the modernization of the Soviet T-72 tanks in service with the Polish army were announced in the 2017 year. At the same time, the Polish Ministry of Defense announced the launch of an analytical program to modernize obsolete tanks. Earlier, in the 2016 year, Poland intended to write off the remaining T-72 weapons, gradually replacing them with a new combat vehicle developed as part of the Gepard project. However, as it turned out, mass production of the new tank could not be launched earlier than 2026, and tanks were required "now." Therefore, it was decided to modernize the MBT T-72.
From 1979 to 1991, the 682 T-72 was produced in Poland in a year, a small part of them later underwent a deep modernization and received the name PT-91 Twardy, but most of the vehicles continue to operate in the basic version.
It is reported that during the modernization, Polish T-72 change engines and install a new launch system. The night vision devices of the driver and commander are installed. In addition, tanks receive new electronics, modern sights, navigation and digital communications. The exact number sent to upgrade the T-72 is not known, but according to unofficial information, we can talk about the order of 300 tanks. Completion is scheduled for 2025 year.
In addition to the MBT T-72 and RT-91, the Polish army is armed with a little more than 200 German tanks Leopard 2A4 and Leopard 2A5.
