The Syrian government’s Arab army ran into a group of terrorists from the Islamic State (banned in Russia) east of Palmyra on Tuesday, Al-Masdar News reports.
According to a report on the territory of the province of Homs, the Syrian army managed to destroy several ISIS terrorists who were moving between the cities of Al-Sukhna and Palmira (Tadmor).
Another clash is also reported between the Syrian army and the Islamists near the Arvad dam. There is information about the victims on both sides, and also, according to unconfirmed reports, this battle led to the exit of terrorists from the area.
Following these clashes, Russian and Syrian military aircraft reportedly launched air strikes on ISIS alleged positions. Last weekend, the Syrian army also sent reinforcements to its units in the eastern part of the province.
The activation of the militants can hardly be called unexpected. Back in October, it was reported that Kurdish forces released ISIS militants held captive immediately after the start of the Turkish offensive in northern Syria. At that time, fears were expressed that this would lead to the intensification of the activities of a terrorist group in the territories previously occupied by it. In particular, in the Palmyra region this is exactly what is happening. Militants are trying to take control of an airfield located in this part of the Homs province.
It must be recalled that previously the SAA had already lost control of Tadmore (Palmyra). It was necessary to restore this control at repeated attack.
