Silent Soviet-built submarine caused concern in Thailand
The Thai Navy is going to adapt to the changing conditions, which were called the "new situation." This was announced after information became known about Myanmar’s intention to send its first submarine to the Andaman Sea in order to ensure security in the local water area.
As the publication indicates The phuket news, the Kilo class diesel-electric submarine [line of Soviet submarines of the 877 and 636 type], which Myanmar acquired from India, is due to begin combat duty on December 24. This was announced by the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Thai Navy Prachachart Sirisavat.
In this regard, the Third Command of the Navy, based in Phuket and responsible for the waters of the Andaman Sea, was instructed to monitor the submarine, which can operate under water for 45 days.
- notes The Phuket News, indicating that the Deputy Prime Minister of Myanmar has already voiced a desire to enter into negotiations with Russia on the purchase of more pennants of this class [apparently, “Varshavyanka”].
At the same time, Thailand is in the process of acquiring three Chinese submarines of the S26T type. An agreement has already been signed worth 2 billion dollars [apparently, this price includes associated costs]. The construction of the first submarine started in China on 7 on September; its transfer is expected in 2023. Funds for the second submarine in the amount of 0,4 billion dollars have not yet been allocated.
- explained Prachachart.
Amid concern over the appearance of a Soviet-built submarine in a neighbor, it announced its intention to develop the Thai submarine fleet. At the same time, information about the Navy's previous desire to replace the purchase of submarines with the acquisition of expensive frigates was called "confusion".
