On December 9 on December 2019, specialists from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) presented another report on the global arms and military services market. According to the data presented for the 2018 year, sales weapons and military services, 100 of the world's largest companies in the defense sector of the economy grew by 4,6 percent compared to the figures for 2017 of the year. In monetary terms, the sales volume of the top 100 companies of the military-industrial complex amounted to 2018 billion US dollars at the end of the 420 year.

SIPRI experts in their press release highlight the fact that compared to the 2002 year (this is the first year for which the institute has data for comparable comparisons), the volume of arms sales on the planet in 2018 increased by 47 percent. This report should be considered, taking into account two things that are specifically stipulated by the institute. Firstly, this rating completely excludes military companies from China that do not fully disclose their accounts. Secondly, the rating includes only 100 of the largest military companies in the world.

To make you understand the sales volumes of these companies, we give a simple example. Amphenol Corp. ranks 2018 in the ranking according to the results of the 100 year. (USA) sold products for 820 million dollars. The company, practically unknown to the general public, produces cables, connectors, printed circuit boards and various electronics for military products experiencing severe overloads and the influence of aggressive environments and negative factors, that is, for rockets, airplanes, helicopters, UAVs, ships, spacecraft, etc.

Russia's Positions in the Top-100 Arms Companies of the World Rating

The total sales volume of Russian companies in the military-industrial complex remains stable, without experiencing serious shocks. In total, the top 100 of the largest arms sellers in the world includes 10 representatives of the Russian defense industry. At the end of the 2018 year, they sold arms and military services for 36,2 billion dollars, while experts note an insignificant decrease in sales, which amounted to only 2017 percent compared to the figures for the 0,4 year. At the same time, due to the growth in sales of competing companies from other countries, primarily the USA and Europe, the share of Russian arms manufacturers in the rating decreased from 9,7 percent to 8,6 percent in the 2018 year.

This is still enough to hold second place in terms of arms sales after the United States (59 percent). The UK ranks second with a slight margin - 8,4 percent (35,1 billion dollars, a drop compared to 2017 year by 4,8 percent). It is worth noting that Russian defense companies took the second place, bypassing the UK back in the 2017 year, maintaining this state of things according to the results of the 2018 year. The fourth place is occupied by France with a share of 5,5 percent (23,2 billion dollars).

Russian companies included in the Top-100 rating prepared by SIPRI experts demonstrate diverse dynamics. Five companies showed an increase in arms sales at the end of the 2018 year, and five, on the contrary, reported a drop in revenues from the sale of weapons and military services. But even despite the growth in sales, not all companies from Russia managed to improve their ranking in the short term. Compared to the 2017 year, only two Russian companies managed to rise: the East Kazakhstan Concern Almaz-Antey and Uralvagonzavod.

Position of Russian companies in the Top-100 rating:
9 place (+ 1 in the ranking): Concern East Kazakhstan Almaz - Antey. Sales of arms and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 9 640 million dollars (the share of military products and services in total sales - 98 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 8 195 million dollars.

15 place (-1 in the ranking): United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). Sales of weapons and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 5 420 million dollars (the share of military products and services in the total sales - 83 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 6 168 million dollars.

18 place (-3 in the ranking): United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC). Sales of weapons and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 4 700 million dollars (the share of military products and services in the total sales - 84 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 4 762 million dollars.

26 place (-2 in the ranking): Tactical Missile Weapons Corporation. Sales of arms and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 3 600 million dollars (the share of military products and services in total sales - 98 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 3 443 million dollars.

33 place (-1 in the ranking): United Engine Corporation (UEC). Sales of arms and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 2 950 million dollars (the share of military products and services in total sales - 76 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 2 926 million dollars.

40 place (-5 in the ranking): JSC NPO High-Precision Complexes. Sales of arms and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 2 630 million dollars (the share of military products and services in total sales - 97 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 2 706 million dollars.

45 place (-2 in the ranking): holding company Ruselektronika. Sales of arms and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 2 330 million dollars (the share of military products and services in total sales - 87 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 2 171 million dollars.

52 place (-15 in the ranking): Russian Helicopters holding. Sales of arms and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 1 810 million dollars (the share of military products and services in total sales - 60 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 2 601 million dollars.

53 place (-7 in the ranking): Concern Radioelectronic Technologies (KRET). Sales of weapons and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 1 770 million dollars (the share of military products and services in the total sales - 92 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 2 113 million dollars.

64 place (+ 4 in the ranking): JSC NPK Uralvagonzavod. Sales of weapons and military services following the results of the 2018 year - 1 370 million dollars (the share of military products and services in the total sales - 62 percent). Sales in 2017 year - 1 281 million dollars.

Almaz-Antey concern became the locomotive of the Russian defense industry: in 2018 alone, it sold military products at 27 percent of total sales of 10 to the largest Russian defense industry companies. This is largely due to the success of the S-400 Triumph air defense system, which was in demand on the international market and continued to be actively purchased by the Russian Armed Forces.

In a situation where the volume of arms purchases for the Russian army is declining, as the large-scale rearmament program is approaching its logical conclusion, hopes remain for the export of new weapons. This trend is most clearly seen in the example of Russian Helicopters holding, which in 2018 showed a drop in sales by 30 percent, primarily due to the completion of mass deliveries of Russian army helicopters. In the future, it seems likely that the situation can be improved by the introduction of the fifth-generation multi-role fighter Su-57 onto the export market. As experience with C-400 systems has shown, Russia is ready to actively promote the latest weapons in the international market, with considerable flexibility. For example, the buyer of two C-400 divisions (with all possible reservations) was Turkey, a member of NATO.

US Hegemony in the Arms Market

The United States dominates the arms and military services market. The top 100 of the largest defense companies in the world according to SIPRI include 43 companies representing the United States. They accounted for 59 percent of all sales of arms and military services in the world for the 2018 year. The total sales of weapons and military services of the American companies included in the rating amounted to 246 billion, an increase of 7,2 percent compared to the 2017 data of the year. For the first time, starting in 2002, the first five places in the rating were unconditionally taken by US companies: Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and General Dynamics, having squeezed such a large arms manufacturer as BAE Systems (Great Britain) into sixth place. Only the five largest US defense companies account for 148 billion dollars in sales or 35 percent of the total sales of 100 of the world's largest manufacturers of weapons, military products and military services.

According to SIPRI experts, the main events for the American defense industry in 2018 were the increasingly clearly observed consolidation processes among all the largest military-manufacturing companies. In 2018, two of the five leading US defense companies, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics, made multi-billion dollar acquisitions. At the same time, Od Flirant, Director of the Arms and Military Expenditures Program of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, noted that U.S. companies are preparing to implement a new program aimed at modernizing arms adopted by Donald Trump back in 2017. As part of the solution to their challenges, American manufacturers of military products are actively uniting with each other in order to produce models and weapons systems of a new generation, as well as more successfully fight for contracts from the US government.

The first place in the world and among American arms companies is rightfully held by the military-industrial corporation Lockheed Martin. She alone sold 2018 billion dollars worth of military products in the 47,26 year, which is more than all the 10 Russian defense companies included in the rating combined. In many respects, the success of this manufacturer is associated with the implementation of a large-scale program for the rearmament of the US Air Force on the fifth-generation fighter-bomber F-35. US forces plan to purchase 2443 of such aircraft of three modifications, about a thousand more F-35 Lightning II aircraft are exported.

Additional facts

According to the results of the 2018 year, 80 companies from the SIPRI Institute prepared the Top-100 rating based in the USA, Europe and Russia. Of the remaining 20, the largest defense companies in the world 6 belong to Japan, three each to Israel, India and South Korea, two more Turkey and one company - Australia. Among these countries, two can be especially distinguished, which are actively increasing arms sales. So South Korea, according to the results of the 2018 year, sold arms and military services for 5,2 billion dollars (an increase of 9,9 percent compared to the 2017 year). Turkey showed even more impressive performance - arms sales for the year increased by 22 percent, reaching 2,8 billion. This is largely due to the desire of the Turkish authorities to significantly modernize their own armed forces and the defense industry.

It's just business, nothing personal. And opposing the capitalist countries to each other is stupid, that NATO has declared "Russia is not an enemy, this is not the USSR."

No one can believe in this world at all. But one must understand that the increase in arms purchases is possible only with the growing threats to the security of a potential buyer from various directions. Therefore, the main seller takes all measures so that no one in this world feels safe. And even if NATO does not call us the enemy, in any case, building up its armed forces will be based on a possible confrontation with us and China. And this, whatever one may say, is the risk of full-scale hostilities. Here the threats of Mujahideen jihadmobiles will not work, the scale is not the same.

In fact, they are very sluggishly rearming themselves. Doesn't feel like preparing for war. China is actively rearming itself, and this is understandable - it is matching its ambitions and capabilities as the world's second power. Russia is actively rearming itself, it is also understandable - if you spread rot on your army for 25 years, then a little "accumulated". For the rest, everything is very measured.
And this rating shows rather who and how much have put their trinkets to anyone, and here, of course, the Americans are great, pulled half the world.

You need to understand that in the dollar environment there is such a thing as inflation. It also needs to be corrected. To understand its significance for the dollar, I will cite a fact: over the past 20 years, the dollar has depreciated by about 10 times.

      10 December 2019 10: 27
which 10 times? over the past 20 years, dollar inflation amounted to approximately 63%, which is slightly more than half and yes it is more than an increase in arms sales, but in the arms sector prices are mainly falling and not rising, so the inflationary effect in this sector is ambiguous

For the sake of justice, it’s quite difficult for them to compete for money. Because nevertheless, the main buyers of Russian arms of the country are poor and the budget of Russia actually pays for their purchases, while the old relatively wealthy buyers either establish their production (China, India) or go over to the side of the enemy (almost the entire former police department, for example). Yes, and the same Chinese are running out, though for some reason they were not included in the schedule (probably due to the closed information)

The price of the Abrams tank at the start of production is about 2 million. Now it is about 10 million. The price of the F-16 at the start of production is 4,5 million, now it is about 100 million.
