Soviet sniper terror against the Wehrmacht

98
In all the armies of the world, well-trained snipers have always been valued, but the importance of snipers increased during the Second World War. The results of this war showed that the snipers of the Red Army were the most prepared and effective in their overwhelming majority. Soviet fighters-snipers in many ways were significantly superior to the snipers of the German Wehrmacht and not only them. And it was not surprising, it turns out the Soviet Union was almost the only country in the world where training in small business was put on stream, it practically covered wide sections of the population of the whole country, trained citizens in small business even in peacetime, as part of pre-draft preparation , the older generation probably still remembers the “Voroshilovsky shooter” sign. The high quality of this training was soon verified by the war, during which the Soviet snipers showed all their skills, this skill is confirmed by the so-called sniper "death lists", from which it is clear that only one first dozen Soviet snipers destroyed (according to confirmed data) 4200 soldiers and officers, and the first twenty - 7400, the Germans did not have such a dozen and twenty.

Sniper cadets at a practical lesson

Despite the hardest defeats of the first months of the war, the preparation of the best shooters in the units and formations of the front line continued at an accelerated pace and did not stop for a minute. Training snipers, in addition, was conducted in spare training units and short-term courses directly in the combat orders of the troops.

However, the military command understood the need for centralized training of "supermarked shooters." September 18 1941 of the year issued a decree on compulsory universal military training of citizens of the USSR, which made it possible to organize military training of the population on the job. The training program was designed for 110 hours. In addition to other military specialties (machine gunner, mortar gunner, signalman), the study went along the line of sniping. Nevertheless, it was extremely difficult to train snipers in such a short time, so it was soon decided to open special "schools of excellent sniper training shooters" (SHOSSP) in military districts. Training has been going on for 3-4 months already with discontinuity. The Moscow Military District alone had three such schools. Instructors for sniping OSOAVIAHIMA were recruited as teachers, who, as in peacetime, continued to train sniper cadres in their schools. In addition, it was decided to organize the centralized training of highly skilled snipers with instructor skills. For this 20 March 1942, a school of instructors-snipers (http://unitkiev.io.ua/s106217) was created in Veshnyaki near Moscow.

Red Army snipers occupy the position

Our opponents of the Germans also had special sniper schools, but the Germans did not have such a broad coverage and such a serious approach in the preparation of snipers, and they were far behind the Red Army in the sniper business.

During World War II, sniping was paid a lot of attention to the troops of the anti-Hitler coalition, however, the results of the Anglo-American snipers were much more modest than those of the Russians, Germans and Finns. The most trained snipers among the allies were mostly from the British, American snipers, mostly distinguished themselves in battles with the Japanese in the Pacific.

Sniper labor was hard and dangerous, the soldiers had to lie in the snow or swamp for hours and even days, and the equipment of the Soviet sniper of the Great Patriotic War was rather stingy. In addition to an optical sight to conduct observation of targets, they had a variety of field binoculars (often 6– and 8 multiples) and trench periscopes TP and TP-8. For self-defense in a melee, a sniper often took several hand grenades, a pistol and a knife with him on a mission. If a sniper group was ambushed, the weapon was also supplemented by a PPSh or PPS submachine gun. Throughout the war and after it, up to the adoption of the SVD (in 1963), the standard sniper rifle in our army remained a rifle mod. 1891 / 30 with PU sight.

Unknown Soviet girls snipers at the dugout. On sergeant's overcoats epaulets, in the hands of a Mosin rifle with a PU optical sight (Shortened Scope)

A total of 1941 1945 year in the USSR produced 53195 sniper rifles sample 1891 / 30's. and 48992 sniper rifles SVT. For wartime, this is a rather large figure, but if you look at the real number of personnel snipers trained during the same time and make an adjustment for the natural decline weapons during the hostilities, it becomes clear that all the front-line "super-marksmen" simply could not be provided with special sniper weapons (http://unitkiev.io.ua/s106217).

By the middle of 1942, Soviet snipers were actively working on all fronts of World War II, they unleashed real sniper terror against German troops, our snipers had a huge moral impact on enemy soldiers, and this is understandable because our enemy snipers shot off almost daily and almost every minute.

The most famous Soviet sniper, of course, is the Hero of Stalingrad Vasily Zaitsev, who destroyed 242 German soldiers and officers, including the head of the Berlin sniper school, Major Konings. In total, Zaitsev’s group over the four months of the fighting destroyed 1126 enemy troops. Zaitsev's comrades in arms were Nikolai Ilyin, who had 496 Germans on his account, Pyotr Goncharov - 380, Viktor Medvedev - 342. It should be noted that the main merit of Zaitsev is not so much in his personal battle account, but in the fact that he became a key figure in deploying the sniper movement among the ruins of Stalingrad, of course, the whole Soviet agitprop worked for the Zaitsev group, so it all familiar

And the main record holder for the destruction of enemy soldiers according to the "death list" was Mikhail Ilich Surkov sniper (4 sd), on his account was recorded 702 killed soldier and officer of the enemy, then by the number of destroyed enemy soldiers in the top ten go:
- Vladimir Gavrilovich Salbiev (71 GVSD and 95 GVSD) - 601 people.
- Vasily Shalvovich Kvachantiradze (259 sp.) -534 people.
- Akhat Abdulhakovich Akhmetyanov (260 SP) -502 people.
- Ivan Mikhailovich Sidorenko (1122 sp.) - 500 people. + 1 tank, 3 tractor
- Nikolai Yakovlevich Ilyin (50 GW.s.p.) - 494 people.
- Ivan Nikolaevich Kulbertinov (23 separate ryzh.br.; 7 Gu. Vozd.-des.p.) 487 people.
- Vladimir Nikolaevich Pchelintsev (11 sbr.) 456 people (including 14 snipers)
- Nikolai Evdokimovich Kazyuk- 446 tsp.
- Pyotr Alekseevich Goncharov (44 GVS.S.) - 441 people.

In total, there are 17 Soviet snipers, whose account of the destroyed enemy soldiers exceeds 400 people. Over 300 destroyed enemy soldiers recorded at the expense of 25 Soviet snipers, 36 Soviet snipers destroyed more than 200 enemy soldiers.

The best of the enemy snipers are: Finnish sniper Simo Hayha - the fifth in the general list, he has more than 500 killed enemy soldiers, of the Wehrmacht snipers this is the twenty-seventh in the general list of Mathias Hetzenauer, in his account 345 people. killed enemy soldiers and Sepp Allerberg on his account 257 enemy soldiers and officers. (http://www.wio.ru/galgrnd/sniper/sniperru.htm).

Soviet snipers go to the firing position in a ruined house in Stalingrad

According to some researchers, the real accounts of many Soviet snipers are actually more than confirmed. So, for example, Fedor Okhlopkov, the 259 sniper sp, according to some sources, destroyed more than 1000 (!) Germans in total, using the machine gun as well, but only 429 destroyed enemy soldiers were recorded on the official combat score, probably the situation on the battlefield did not always give an opportunity to consider their results more accurately.

In the diaries and letters found in the killed soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht, there are such phrases: “The Russian sniper is something very terrible, you cannot hide from him anywhere! You can’t lift your head in trenches. You can get a bullet between your eyes ...” Russian snipers for hours lie in one place in the ambush and take on the fly everyone who seems. Only in the dark can you feel safe. " But it turns out that in the dark the Germans also could not feel safe. So, the 1-th sniper of the Guards Art Regiment, Ivan Kalashnikov (the artillery also had his own sniper) of 350 soldiers killed, and the Nazis destroyed 45 at night - this shooter had a truly cat's sight!

By 1943, among the Soviet snipers, there were already more 1000 women, during the war they counted more than 12000 killed fascists, the best of women snipers is considered Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlyuchenko, sn.54 sn, during the war, she managed to destroy 309 enemy soldiers 36 were themselves snipers.

Soviet sniper Sergeant Tsyrendashi Dorzhiev from the 202 Infantry Division in the firing position. Leningrad front. The battle account of C. Dorzhiev (a Buryat by nationality) before his death in January 1943 amounted to 270 killed soldiers and officers of the defender.

Adopted by the Red Army in 1942, the "Combat Charter of Infantry" defined the range of combat missions carried out by snipers at the front: "Destruction of snipers, officers, observers, gun and machine-gun crews (especially flanking and dagger), crews who stopped tanks, low-flying enemy aircraft, and generally all important, appearing for a short time and rapidly disappearing targets ... The sniper should also be able to show the infantry, artillery, mortars and anti-tank guns with a tracer bullet and other important methods that are not vulnerable to the bullet: tanks, bunkers (bunkers) guns. "

And the Soviet sniper clearly fulfilled all of the tasks prescribed by him, so the sniper, marine Rubakho Filipp Yakovlevich (393 otd.bat.mor.peh.) Destroyed 346 enemy soldiers, 1 tank and disabled the garrisons 8-m DOTT enemy, sniper XNX sp Ivan Abdulov destroyed 849 German soldiers, of whom 298 people. they were snipers themselves, plus a brave fighter destroyed two enemy tanks with grenades. Sniper 5 Guts Anatoly Kozlenkov besides 283 people killed by him. enemy soldiers knocked 194 tank grenades and destroyed 2 BTR Germans and such examples are many, our sniper managed to incite even the German planes, so we know that the sniper 3-th Infantry Division Mikhail Lisov in October 82, the automatic rifle with sniper scope knocked dive bomber U-1941. Unfortunately, there are no data on the number of infantrymen killed by them, and the sniper of the 87 Infantry Division, Sergeant-Major Antonov Vasily Antonovich, in July 796 near Voronezh 1942 with rifle shots shot down a twin-engine bomber Yu-4! There is no data on the number of infantrymen killed by them either.

Sniper of the 203 Rifle Division (3 of the Ukrainian Front), Senior Sergeant Ivan Petrovich Merkulov in the firing position. In March, 1944, Ivan Merkulov was awarded the highest award - the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. During the war years, the sniper destroyed more than 144 enemy soldiers and officers.

Even Hitler's generals died from the fire of Soviet snipers, as Semyon Nomokonov, a sniper, counts among the 367 of the German soldiers and officers he destroyed, one was in the rank of Wehrmacht. On account of the sniper 14 sp. NKVD troops

Evgenia Nikolaeva also recorded a German general.

There was even a sniper specifically designed to combat enemy snipers, so the sniper 81Гв..сп. Vasily Votes of all destroyed 422 people. enemy soldiers of them 70 people. they themselves were snipers.

The special practice of using snipers existed at this time in the troops of the NKVD. After training and special training, the "supermetrists" traveled to combat training in the army in the field. Such sniper teams usually ranged from 20 to 40 people, the duration of the trip - from 10 days to a month. Thus, a significant part of the personnel not only received special training, but also was run-in in actual conditions of advanced. For example, in the 23 division of the NKVD troops for the protection of railways during the war years 7283 snipers were trained.

Snipers Division Senior Lieutenant F.D. Lunin volley fire on enemy aircraft

In the memorandum "On the combat activities of snipers of the troops of the NKVD of the USSR on the protection of important industrial enterprises for the period from October 1 1942 to December 31 1943." says: "... Parts of the troops over the past period have been practiced in the combat formations of the current Red Army, some of which are 2-3 times. As a result of the combat work of enemy snipers, 39745 was destroyed by enemy soldiers and officers. In addition, an aircraft was shot down and 10 was destroyed stereotube and periscopes. Loss of our snipers: 68 man killed, 112 man injured. " (http://unitkiev.io.ua/s106217)

In total, during the war years, 428335 trained excellent snipers in total - this is a huge number. Not a single army in the world had such a massive training of snipers that significantly increased the battle formations of rifle units. In addition, a highly qualified 9534 sniper was trained in the training units of central subordination.

I would especially like to recall and mention Lieutenant General GF Morozov; it was he who made a great contribution to the organization of centralized training of sniper cadres, he, heading one of the departments of the General Staff, accumulated and analyzed the combat experience of Soviet snipers throughout the war.

In all, during the war years, 87 snipers became Heroes of the Soviet Union, and 39 became full holders of the Order of Glory.

Yeah, the efficiency of these fighters on the battlefield was simply unbelievable! Given that most soldiers at the front did not personally kill enemies, especially in the line of sight, the numbers of 100 or more enemy soldiers destroyed by one sniper are amazing

So on the article. I read a lot of materials on the subject of Soviet snipers during the war, as well as their struggle against the German counterparts and what I want to say. In many ways I agree with the article. But in order to dispel some of the stuffing I’ll say:
1). I would like to point out that German "snipers" under names such as "Erwin Koenig" and "Heinz Torvald" are fictional characters. They never existed in documents, and according to any archival documents, these people did not exist. In any case, I have not found any documentary evidence of their existence at the front. Surely these names had their real prototypes, it is possible that these prototypes had authority in the German units. But it is not possible yet to document that these people really existed. Therefore, I recommend treating "Erwin Koenig" and "Heinz Torvald" as mythical images and front-line bikes. Of course, Vasily Zaitsev had a duel with a German counterpart in Stalingrad, but the fact that it was "Erwin Koenig" is never said or confirmed. More than 90% can say that this was a different German and more real specialist.
2). Finn Simo Haya, who has an official list of 505, by definition cannot be on the list of the best snipers during the Second World War, since his official list is not for the Second World War, but for the Winter War of the USSR with Finland in 1939-1940. And the question about Haya's list is very controversial, since this list is not documented by anyone, and in many respects is compiled from the words of Haya himself. Whether to believe the "honest-pioneer" Finnish warriors is also a very controversial question. Moreover, at the end of that war, Khaya himself was shot down by an unknown Soviet sniper, who with an explosive bullet smashed the entire face of the Chukhontsi and excommunicated him from hostilities for life. After that, barely surviving Khaya half of his life patched his face and no longer took a rifle in his hands. So to embellish his list after the war with extra assigned Red Army soldiers - the Finn had good reasons.
        3) Of the documented German experts, who turned out to be more or less the same successful shooter as the first 200 Soviet Voroshilov shooters, there were only 5 people - Hetzenauer, Allerberger, Pine and Lithuanian in the Wehrmacht Sutkus.
The difference is just huge. Here the USSR outplayed the Wehrmacht completely dry.

The author is lying. In the first place on all the lists is Simya Häiha (according to Finnish transcription). He destroyed 742 opponents. He was born near Imatra, almost on the border with Russia. Farmer. During the war he was seriously wounded by an explosive bullet in the face.

The Finnish War lasted 100 days, i.e. 5 people a day, it is highly doubtful, it's just "Cool Sam" of some kind.
In addition, Sima Haikh acted alone, without a partner, i.e. his words are simply no one to confirm.
IMHO, this account is exaggerated, Finnish propaganda. The same exaggerated as the score of the German ace Hartman, who also always acted alone, and all victories were confirmed only by his "honest pioneer".

Those who have taken a difficult fight have simply become land and grass.

And scoundrels can be found anywhere and in any country and under any regime, but especially often among those writers from whom you read this. By the way, that's what I want to say.
After the Second World War, we practically did not develop sniping. Only after the 90s did new developments begin to appear. Now IMHO the level of sniping in Russia is 3 years behind NATO. And by the way, I consider this a great achievement.

A sniper kills a certain number of enemies - it is presented to a medal, then to Glory of the 3rd degree, then to the 2nd, then to the 1st, and there is a Star on the horizon - you only need to survive, and this is a big problem ...

In one photograph, snipers with rifles with attached bayonets, and in the rest without bayonets, it can be assumed that rifles with bayonets are ordinary, but with sniper sights. but without bayonets specially prepared.
There were recollections that the snipers weren’t particularly fond of their snipers - sniper activity was fraught, the Germans were very sensitive to their own losses, usually they immediately launched artillery and mortar raids, very effective, so there are cases when snipers were simply expelled from their sections .. .

        snipers with bayonet rifles

There was a good film about weapons, so they explained there that the Mosin old-style rifle should have fired with a bayonet. The bayonet served as a compensator. Later, in the modification of the thirties, this defect was eliminated (the rifle index was also changed, it became fractional then), the presence of the bayonet became optional.

It is logical. You want to live. I read the memoirs of frontline scouts in Drabkin's collection, they also had problems. Like "you will make a sensation here, but we will disentangle".

About the rifle. For the SVT-40, no special modifications were required to install the optics. After the modernization of 30 years, the "Mosinka" did not change the sighting, also with a bayonet. Most likely this is just a staged shot.
But rifles for sniper shooting underwent a special fit and barrel processing. My father, who graduated from the 43th district sniper school in 16, recalled that even the bolt in the rifle "slid", but in the usual one had to pull. They reloaded it like this: with the edge of the palm they knocked the bolt handle into a horizontal position and moved it back, and then sent the cartridge with the thumb. For such manipulation, the shutter must "slide".
They demanded 4 aimed shots in 15 sec. For a hundred meters, all the holes had to be closed with a matchbox.
And you are right: he remembers well - they did not like snipers. They even refused to feed.

An ordinary mosquito ALWAYS shot at with an attached bayonet, only after modernization in 1944 (the bayonet became reclining), they began to shoot without it. So the bayonet will be attached just for solidity. And then he will give out a sniper in position, no disguise will save.

    vylvyn,
without orders, probably because they can give out a sniper (there will be a flare, orders and medals glisten) and for a sniper this is death, well, at best, they will spot him and he will have to urgently change his position. But there were fewer female snipers, respectively, and the likelihood of having photographs was less.
It is a pity that we pay little attention to the preparation of real snipers after a non-war, but basically they gave the sniper rifle to just good shooters. You see, other sniper rifles would be mass-produced and bought from us instead of us from the West (SVD doesn’t count, it is good for no more than 1 km or less, and accuracy at this distance leaves much to be desired, and modern sniper rifles are much more effective farther) crying

Here is an excerpt from an article about another steppe shooter - that’s what Ibraim Suleymenov was called:
At the army rally of snipers in the summer of 1943, the famous sniper Suleimenov performed at Velikiye Luki. He said: “Why did I become a sniper? I started a war near Moscow. I saw the shot collective farmers, collective farmers and their children. I entered the houses, and people told me how the Nazis mocked them. I saw grief, suffering in every house ... Even now I can’t calmly feel .. It was hard for me to see this. I vowed in those days to become a sniper. Why did I defend Moscow? I am Kazakh, my Kazakhstan is far from Moscow. But Moscow is the capital of our entire Union. She and my capital. That is why I defended Moscow. But that's not all. I thought: if the fascists are not stopped and destroyed, they can reach my native Kazakhstan. I will not calm down until at least one Hitlerite stomps our land. I destroyed 239 fascists. I urge you to bring death to the invaders ”

Something about the kilometer and the SVD, there are some doubts. I have nothing against it and I appreciate professionalism, but my first VUS is a scout - a sniper and everything happened. In principle, there were good defeats at considerable distances and more than 1 km, but I was inclined to work at a distance of 600 - 800 meters with SVD, and if there was a strong difference in height, then less. SVD - this is not a pure sniper rifle - it is a high-precision rifle with an optical sight for working with a military unit, especially self-loading, which is difficult to combine with sniper shooting. It is still not clear that in Afghanistan one could have preferred SVD (for sniper shooting), what are the alternatives in terms of? At least they weren’t in the division reconnaissance of the Airborne Forces - and that’s all.

I agree, the system of shooting training was thought out in the USSR. Even I captured her. At the age of 60, each school had small-caliber rifles, and monthly, starting from grade 3 (10 years), rifle training took place. In addition, intensified skiing and winter swimming training were held in the winter. There was already a rifle section in the college, here the training was already put on a scientific basis, participated in city and regional competitions. In the city there was a shooting range, where literally for a penny, it was possible to shoot not only from a small-caliber rifle, but also a 7,62 mm carbine.

Not! You're lying! A stranger was given a name!
Nobody considers you to be people for a long time.

But the enemy has a lot of fighters with such characteristics. Our snipers will not be left without work ...

The article is mostly good, but the headline is frank
Soviet sniper terror against the Wehrmacht

Modestly they spat in our faces and on the graves of our fathers and grandfathers.
"Good lads" from Germany came to us in peace, and we terrorized them.

I do not see the word terror as anything offensive.
Terror - intimidation with the threat of reprisal or murder.
Is not it. The task was to intimidate the Nazis - they wouldn’t show their nose.
Grandfathers did this, as far as possible.

Eh, brothers, we would have had the qualities that were those who passed the Great Patriotic War and remained on the battlefields ... Eternal memory to the fallen in the battles for freedom and independence of our Motherland (USSR)! Special thanks for the songs!

I agree with the comments that the concept of "terror" is not applicable to snipers of the Great Patriotic War. It was a war for the Motherland, and its defense and terror are completely different things.
In general, the article is good and necessary. However, I want to add something, since my first VUS was - a scout - a sniper and this topic is far from indifferent to me.
    1) Wehrmacht officers indeed quite often noted in their reports that even the average soldier of the Red Army shoots much more accurately than the German soldiers (a huge plus to the Voroshilov riflemen’s movement).
    2) The sniper movement received special development during the blockade of Leningrad, which was caused by a long positional struggle, when sniper shooting inflicted damage comparable to artillery fire. Although during a short-term battle, a sniper can greatly turn the tide. Example: sniper M.S. Bryksin in one battle destroyed more than a hundred confirmed Germans.
A similar situation in Stalingrad - a more or less positional war and the role of snipers is growing.
    3) Some inaccuracy in the name of the TR. In fact and in principle of operation, this can of course be called a "trench periscope", but in reality it is a scout's tube.
    4) The sniper group is a very relative concept. The point is how much the commander of the unit with the sniper has his head (we mean that the sniper has it, otherwise his comrades will begin to remember him in the past tense soon) and provides the sniper with direct cover and fire support. In the normal situation (we are talking about the period of the Second World War), a sniper attracts machine-gun crews and even artillery to accomplish his task, both to cover or change position, and to mask the sound of a shot.
In general, the topic is endless, but the article is useful.

And quite a lot of optical sights were used during the war: PE, PT, VP (had 2 types of mounting brackets), PU. By the way, German snipers noted that our sights are more consistent with the conditions of that war.

In general, I would call Marinescu the greatest sniper of the Great Patriotic War. 3 torpedoes and over 9 thousand heads of the "chosen nation" went to the bottom.

without a doubt, Marinesco is our everything, although I have read a lot about him - I don’t know whether to believe it or not, but they wanted to give him to the tribunal somehow, so the whole submarine team stood up for him)))

The personal score of a sniper is, of course, wonderful, it says a lot, but it seems to me that this was not what the sniper should have been doing in the first place. I read about the goals and tasks of snipers in attack and defense, listed: officers, messengers, signalmen, observers, spotters, and only last but not least, machine gun and artillery crews. That's what you need to brag about, bunkers and guns, and not the corpses of observers and messengers. The priorities are not the same, snipers were only strained as a last resort to fight with machine gunners, when they didn’t, when they pressed them. And what is a Wehrmacht machine gunner - these are hundreds of lives of infantrymen. The machine gunner's score is not 200-300 people like a sniper's, but thousands and thousands, people went crazy from the slaughter. "" Rubakho Filipp Yakovlevich (393rd battalion marine infantry) destroyed 346 enemy soldiers, 1 tank and disabled the garrisons of 8 bunkers "" - only 8 bunkers, the rest do not even have that.
About the fullness of the mouth with a group of up to 8 snipers, I consider it sufficient to suppress almost all machine guns in the offensive zone. We had a shield on the Maxim machine gun; the Germans never had it on a light machine gun, which means they were not afraid of our snipers.
