Soviet sniper terror against the Wehrmacht
Despite the hardest defeats of the first months of the war, the preparation of the best shooters in the units and formations of the front line continued at an accelerated pace and did not stop for a minute. Training snipers, in addition, was conducted in spare training units and short-term courses directly in the combat orders of the troops.
However, the military command understood the need for centralized training of "supermarked shooters." September 18 1941 of the year issued a decree on compulsory universal military training of citizens of the USSR, which made it possible to organize military training of the population on the job. The training program was designed for 110 hours. In addition to other military specialties (machine gunner, mortar gunner, signalman), the study went along the line of sniping. Nevertheless, it was extremely difficult to train snipers in such a short time, so it was soon decided to open special "schools of excellent sniper training shooters" (SHOSSP) in military districts. Training has been going on for 3-4 months already with discontinuity. The Moscow Military District alone had three such schools. Instructors for sniping OSOAVIAHIMA were recruited as teachers, who, as in peacetime, continued to train sniper cadres in their schools. In addition, it was decided to organize the centralized training of highly skilled snipers with instructor skills. For this 20 March 1942, a school of instructors-snipers (http://unitkiev.io.ua/s106217) was created in Veshnyaki near Moscow.
Our opponents of the Germans also had special sniper schools, but the Germans did not have such a broad coverage and such a serious approach in the preparation of snipers, and they were far behind the Red Army in the sniper business.
During World War II, sniping was paid a lot of attention to the troops of the anti-Hitler coalition, however, the results of the Anglo-American snipers were much more modest than those of the Russians, Germans and Finns. The most trained snipers among the allies were mostly from the British, American snipers, mostly distinguished themselves in battles with the Japanese in the Pacific.
Sniper labor was hard and dangerous, the soldiers had to lie in the snow or swamp for hours and even days, and the equipment of the Soviet sniper of the Great Patriotic War was rather stingy. In addition to an optical sight to conduct observation of targets, they had a variety of field binoculars (often 6– and 8 multiples) and trench periscopes TP and TP-8. For self-defense in a melee, a sniper often took several hand grenades, a pistol and a knife with him on a mission. If a sniper group was ambushed, the weapon was also supplemented by a PPSh or PPS submachine gun. Throughout the war and after it, up to the adoption of the SVD (in 1963), the standard sniper rifle in our army remained a rifle mod. 1891 / 30 with PU sight.
A total of 1941 1945 year in the USSR produced 53195 sniper rifles sample 1891 / 30's. and 48992 sniper rifles SVT. For wartime, this is a rather large figure, but if you look at the real number of personnel snipers trained during the same time and make an adjustment for the natural decline weapons during the hostilities, it becomes clear that all the front-line "super-marksmen" simply could not be provided with special sniper weapons (http://unitkiev.io.ua/s106217).
By the middle of 1942, Soviet snipers were actively working on all fronts of World War II, they unleashed real sniper terror against German troops, our snipers had a huge moral impact on enemy soldiers, and this is understandable because our enemy snipers shot off almost daily and almost every minute.
The most famous Soviet sniper, of course, is the Hero of Stalingrad Vasily Zaitsev, who destroyed 242 German soldiers and officers, including the head of the Berlin sniper school, Major Konings. In total, Zaitsev’s group over the four months of the fighting destroyed 1126 enemy troops. Zaitsev's comrades in arms were Nikolai Ilyin, who had 496 Germans on his account, Pyotr Goncharov - 380, Viktor Medvedev - 342. It should be noted that the main merit of Zaitsev is not so much in his personal battle account, but in the fact that he became a key figure in deploying the sniper movement among the ruins of Stalingrad, of course, the whole Soviet agitprop worked for the Zaitsev group, so it all familiar
And the main record holder for the destruction of enemy soldiers according to the "death list" was Mikhail Ilich Surkov sniper (4 sd), on his account was recorded 702 killed soldier and officer of the enemy, then by the number of destroyed enemy soldiers in the top ten go:
- Vladimir Gavrilovich Salbiev (71 GVSD and 95 GVSD) - 601 people.
- Vasily Shalvovich Kvachantiradze (259 sp.) -534 people.
- Akhat Abdulhakovich Akhmetyanov (260 SP) -502 people.
- Ivan Mikhailovich Sidorenko (1122 sp.) - 500 people. + 1 tank, 3 tractor
- Nikolai Yakovlevich Ilyin (50 GW.s.p.) - 494 people.
- Ivan Nikolaevich Kulbertinov (23 separate ryzh.br.; 7 Gu. Vozd.-des.p.) 487 people.
- Vladimir Nikolaevich Pchelintsev (11 sbr.) 456 people (including 14 snipers)
- Nikolai Evdokimovich Kazyuk- 446 tsp.
- Pyotr Alekseevich Goncharov (44 GVS.S.) - 441 people.
In total, there are 17 Soviet snipers, whose account of the destroyed enemy soldiers exceeds 400 people. Over 300 destroyed enemy soldiers recorded at the expense of 25 Soviet snipers, 36 Soviet snipers destroyed more than 200 enemy soldiers.
The best of the enemy snipers are: Finnish sniper Simo Hayha - the fifth in the general list, he has more than 500 killed enemy soldiers, of the Wehrmacht snipers this is the twenty-seventh in the general list of Mathias Hetzenauer, in his account 345 people. killed enemy soldiers and Sepp Allerberg on his account 257 enemy soldiers and officers. (http://www.wio.ru/galgrnd/sniper/sniperru.htm).
According to some researchers, the real accounts of many Soviet snipers are actually more than confirmed. So, for example, Fedor Okhlopkov, the 259 sniper sp, according to some sources, destroyed more than 1000 (!) Germans in total, using the machine gun as well, but only 429 destroyed enemy soldiers were recorded on the official combat score, probably the situation on the battlefield did not always give an opportunity to consider their results more accurately.
In the diaries and letters found in the killed soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht, there are such phrases: “The Russian sniper is something very terrible, you cannot hide from him anywhere! You can’t lift your head in trenches. You can get a bullet between your eyes ...” Russian snipers for hours lie in one place in the ambush and take on the fly everyone who seems. Only in the dark can you feel safe. " But it turns out that in the dark the Germans also could not feel safe. So, the 1-th sniper of the Guards Art Regiment, Ivan Kalashnikov (the artillery also had his own sniper) of 350 soldiers killed, and the Nazis destroyed 45 at night - this shooter had a truly cat's sight!
By 1943, among the Soviet snipers, there were already more 1000 women, during the war they counted more than 12000 killed fascists, the best of women snipers is considered Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlyuchenko, sn.54 sn, during the war, she managed to destroy 309 enemy soldiers 36 were themselves snipers.
Adopted by the Red Army in 1942, the "Combat Charter of Infantry" defined the range of combat missions carried out by snipers at the front: "Destruction of snipers, officers, observers, gun and machine-gun crews (especially flanking and dagger), crews who stopped tanks, low-flying enemy aircraft, and generally all important, appearing for a short time and rapidly disappearing targets ... The sniper should also be able to show the infantry, artillery, mortars and anti-tank guns with a tracer bullet and other important methods that are not vulnerable to the bullet: tanks, bunkers (bunkers) guns. "
And the Soviet sniper clearly fulfilled all of the tasks prescribed by him, so the sniper, marine Rubakho Filipp Yakovlevich (393 otd.bat.mor.peh.) Destroyed 346 enemy soldiers, 1 tank and disabled the garrisons 8-m DOTT enemy, sniper XNX sp Ivan Abdulov destroyed 849 German soldiers, of whom 298 people. they were snipers themselves, plus a brave fighter destroyed two enemy tanks with grenades. Sniper 5 Guts Anatoly Kozlenkov besides 283 people killed by him. enemy soldiers knocked 194 tank grenades and destroyed 2 BTR Germans and such examples are many, our sniper managed to incite even the German planes, so we know that the sniper 3-th Infantry Division Mikhail Lisov in October 82, the automatic rifle with sniper scope knocked dive bomber U-1941. Unfortunately, there are no data on the number of infantrymen killed by them, and the sniper of the 87 Infantry Division, Sergeant-Major Antonov Vasily Antonovich, in July 796 near Voronezh 1942 with rifle shots shot down a twin-engine bomber Yu-4! There is no data on the number of infantrymen killed by them either.
Even Hitler's generals died from the fire of Soviet snipers, as Semyon Nomokonov, a sniper, counts among the 367 of the German soldiers and officers he destroyed, one was in the rank of Wehrmacht. On account of the sniper 14 sp. NKVD troops
Evgenia Nikolaeva also recorded a German general.
There was even a sniper specifically designed to combat enemy snipers, so the sniper 81Гв..сп. Vasily Votes of all destroyed 422 people. enemy soldiers of them 70 people. they themselves were snipers.
The special practice of using snipers existed at this time in the troops of the NKVD. After training and special training, the "supermetrists" traveled to combat training in the army in the field. Such sniper teams usually ranged from 20 to 40 people, the duration of the trip - from 10 days to a month. Thus, a significant part of the personnel not only received special training, but also was run-in in actual conditions of advanced. For example, in the 23 division of the NKVD troops for the protection of railways during the war years 7283 snipers were trained.
In the memorandum "On the combat activities of snipers of the troops of the NKVD of the USSR on the protection of important industrial enterprises for the period from October 1 1942 to December 31 1943." says: "... Parts of the troops over the past period have been practiced in the combat formations of the current Red Army, some of which are 2-3 times. As a result of the combat work of enemy snipers, 39745 was destroyed by enemy soldiers and officers. In addition, an aircraft was shot down and 10 was destroyed stereotube and periscopes. Loss of our snipers: 68 man killed, 112 man injured. " (http://unitkiev.io.ua/s106217)
In total, during the war years, 428335 trained excellent snipers in total - this is a huge number. Not a single army in the world had such a massive training of snipers that significantly increased the battle formations of rifle units. In addition, a highly qualified 9534 sniper was trained in the training units of central subordination.
I would especially like to recall and mention Lieutenant General GF Morozov; it was he who made a great contribution to the organization of centralized training of sniper cadres, he, heading one of the departments of the General Staff, accumulated and analyzed the combat experience of Soviet snipers throughout the war.
In all, during the war years, 87 snipers became Heroes of the Soviet Union, and 39 became full holders of the Order of Glory.
