In India, the updated tank "Arjun" Mk-1A called "reliable bull"

39

India is preparing for the DefExpo India 2020 military-technical exhibition. A representative forum will open next February in Uttar Pradesh. It is noted that, among other things, India will demonstrate an updated version of its main combat tank Arjun Mk-1A. The tank not so long ago completed testing at the Rajasthan training ground.

The developers of the Arjun Mk-1A tank are the representatives of the special laboratory of armored vehicles of the Organization for Defense Research and Development (DRDO), as well as the Research Institute of Combat Vehicles (CVRDE).

From a statement by DRDO officials:

The tank completed all the tasks during the tests and went through rigorous field trials. We expect that in the near future the country's Ministry of Defense will announce its intentions (to conclude a contract). 1 improvements were made to the Arjun Mk-72A over the existing version, of which 14 were large, specifically requested by the army.

Director of CVRDE V. Balamurugan noted that the tank has increased firepower parameters, crew protection, while the armored car has become more maneuverable compared to the previous version. A new gunner’s main sight has been installed, integrated with an automatic target tracking system. The tank also has a laser rangefinder and a thermal imager. It is stated that the tank’s arsenal now has “thermobaric ammunition”.

An additional “option” of the updated “Arjuna” is the TWMP mine device.

From the statement of the developer:

TWMP allows the tank to easily cross minefields. The device is located in front of the tank and literally plows the ground, throwing mines to the side.

In the presentation material, the 68-ton “Arjun” Mk-1A is called the “reliable bull”, which is “the most deadly tank of Indian design.” It should be noted that the initial version of "Arjuna" had a mass of 58,5 tons.

The tank is equipped with sensors for chemical and radiation contamination of the area.

From the material:

The sensor detects harmful chemicals, triggers an alarm, and the system raises the pressure to a little higher than atmospheric, thereby preventing toxic air from getting inside. The crew of the tank receives air through a special filter.

To increase maneuverability, a hydropneumatic suspension system with "fine tuning" is used. The tank uses several navigation options on the ground, including GPS.

Chassis - from the T-72 tank. So the ride will be reliable.
But over the tower they perverted. Look at it without the "body kit". It's just a box.

An article from 2004, a lot can change during this time. But, as said above:

                Of course, much can change.
Yes, and the Indians are still venturers in crossing a hedgehog with a snake.
I just think that if you replace the chassis, it’s already called the tank in a different way.
And if you upgrade the chassis, even if radically - they can leave the old name.

The tank is good, but heavy, in India, not all bridges can pass both by rail and by ordinary, because of this there is a problem with logistics.

And the main surprise was the price of the tank - as much as $ 4 million!, Almost like the Leopard-2A5 and 1,5 times more expensive than the T-90S.

It would be more correct to call him "reliable elephant", it is more relevant for India. Because. there were fighting elephants, but I had not heard of fighting bulls. And the weight is 68 tons, like the Jewish "Merkava", but it was made according to specific Jewish troubles with a cruising range of 200 - 300 km. But for India, with its distances .... How will they carry it? Or drive on your own - from east to west and back?)))

Well, if the German company did it, then obviously they did not take the Russian tank as a basis, but their own, with all the advantages and disadvantages that followed from here, and then the Indians also climbed with their "big Wishlist". The Germans have created what they asked for, but the fact that it will not drive on more than one bridge, without the threat of its collapse, so forgive, but it happened, just as much weigh all your "Wishlist"

Is the tank too heavy? How will he crawl in endless Indian mangroves?
    1. +3
      8 December 2019 17: 48
Yes. Too heavy. The specific ground pressure is small. But the problem is bridges. They are frail in India. And in order to cross Arzhuna across the river, you need to create a pontoon crossing near a highway or road.
Therefore, the Indians suggest using Arjun as a tank: 1) a breakthrough defense 2) anti-tank defense.
And for raids after the breakthrough, marches use T-90.

Most importantly 68t. ??? Where will he go? If the swamp or snow? What surface should the caterpillar be? Which engine? How fast is it? Today, a tank may have 100 tons, but the difference between a tank and a concrete bunker is that the tank is moving.

120mm rifled gun - an interesting choice

The choice is strange. Only the English Challenger has 120 mm rifled.
Smoothbore gun is more convenient for OBPS. Threaded gives more
accuracy when shooting long distances with HE or Kum shells.
