New pistol cartridges for the US Army

At the beginning of 2017, the U.S. Army completed the XM17 Modular Handgun System competition, which aimed to select a promising gun to replace existing samples. The winner of the competition was SIG Sauer with its P320 pistol in two versions - M17 and M18. Together with pistols, the armed forces requested a number of new cartridges. In the near future, another ammunition is expected to enhance combat capabilities. weapons.

In the process of rearmament

In fact, the program for the search for a new pistol was launched at the end of the 2000s at the initiative of the US Air Force. Subsequently, the army launched a similar competition. A real search for a pistol for rearmament began in the early tenths, and in the 2014, comparative tests began. The final MHS contest was launched at the beginning of 2015.

The Pentagon received proposals for eight pistols of American and foreign production. After several stages of comparative tests, the military chose the most successful. At the beginning of 2017, SIG Sauer was announced the winner with its P230 pistol, customized to customer requirements.

In the same year, several batches of serial pistols M17 (full-size P230) and M18 (compact version) were transferred to the customer and distributed between a number of parts. In 2018, there were additional requirements for the refinement of the design. The production, supply and operation of weapons continues.

In the foreseeable future, the M17 and M18 are expected to completely displace several types of existing pistols. According to Pentagon plans, SIG Sauer products will be used in all types of armed forces. This will provide all the benefits associated with the unification of the army’s weapons.

Cartridges for MHS

As part of the MHS program, it was planned to choose not only a gun, but also new cartridges for it. The M17 / 18 uses the ammunition 9x19 mm Parabellum. Especially for him, it was necessary to develop two new live ammunition with a shell and expansive bullet. At the design and comparison stage, these cartridges were called XM1152 and XM1153, respectively. To date, they have gone into the series and have lost the letter “X”.

Weapons adopted live ammunition development company Winchester. Due to customer requirements, ammunition is based on existing products and has limited differences, which allowed to quickly launch production and reduce costs.

The M1152 cartridge uses a lively shell lead bullet with a flat nose. Mass - 115 gran (7,45 g). Muzzle velocity at the exit of the M17 pistol - approx. 400 m / s. Such a bullet should combine sufficient penetration with the maximum possible stopping effect. M1152 is considered as the main cartridge for M17 / 18, designed to solve most of the tasks.

For special operations, the M1153 cartridge is offered, the bullet of which has an expansive cavity (JHP). Winchester developed such a bullet based on the existing T-Series range. In terms of its parameters, the M1153 bullet is close to M1152, but has significant differences. The cavity in the nose of the bullet should provide a more complete transfer of energy to the target.

New pistol cartridges for the US Army

The M1153 cartridge is offered as a special munition for use in special situations and in individual operations. It is argued that in a number of situations the proposed bullet design will allow hitting targets without the risk of penetrating through and receiving collateral damage. The developers also indicate that the bullet does not contradict international agreements and can be freely used in the army.

The M1156 training cartridge has also been developed - a copy of the M1152 combat without burning components and with a hole in the sleeve. There is a single M1157. It differs from the combat one by the presence of a burning cork covering the sleeve of the sleeve.

Defense companies have already launched mass production of new types of cartridges and are supplying them to the army. Thus, the Pentagon has so far received the desired rifle complex, which includes several new products.

Apparently, due to this complex, it is possible to increase indicators and existing weapons. The new 9X19 mm cartridges are fully compatible not only with the M17 / 18, but also with older army pistols. However, they do not plan to use such opportunities for a long time. The aim of the current program is a complete transition to modern pistols, and in the end the new line of cartridges will only be used with the M17 and M18.

New ammunition

Recently it became known that another cartridge with a special bullet will go into service with the US Army. Back in March, the procurement department of the Ministry of Defense posted documents on planned supplies of cartridges with the XM1196 index. Unfortunately, most of the information on this munition is not yet available, but there are various estimates and assumptions.

Shops with M1153 cartridges. Photo US Army

The exact requirements for XM1196 are unknown. Obviously, this will be the cartridge 9x19 mm Para. The bullet should have an expansive cavity and ensure the effective transfer of kinetic energy to the target. The cost of a cartridge with a new bullet is 31 cent apiece.

It is not known which companies participated in the competition, who won and how the bullets of their development differ. It is expected that some of these data will be published in the foreseeable future. This will clarify the situation and provide answers to basic questions regarding the cartridge and the entire MHS program.

It is currently unclear why the Pentagon ordered the development and production of a new cartridge with an expansive bullet. In the recent past, the Winchester M1153 ammunition, which showed sufficient characteristics, came into service. Now, for some reason, the army requested a new, similar cartridge.

The appearance of an order for XM1196 may indicate the Pentagon’s desire to expand the range of ammunition for pistols under 9x19 mm - primarily for the latest M17 and M18, which will become the main and unique in their class. At the same time, the order could be the result of dissatisfaction with the existing M1153 product.

Despite the adoption and arming in the series, an existing cartridge with a JHP bullet may have certain problems and may not fully meet the requirements. Deficiencies can occur in the form of insufficient penetration when working on unprotected and protected targets. Also, insufficient transfer of energy to the target cannot be ruled out. If so, then the new cartridge should be free from such shortcomings.

Unfortunately, very little is known about the XM1196 cartridge yet. In fact, so far only information about its existence, about the main design feature and about purchases has become public knowledge.

Great responsibility

According to current Pentagon plans, over the next few years, all types of US forces will abandon existing pistols and switch to the latest M17 and M18 from SIG Sauer. These products will become the main weapons of their class for the next few decades. For this reason, the choice of a pistol and cartridges for him is of particular importance and is associated with great responsibility.

The issue of choosing a weapon has already been resolved. The problem of updating the ammunition stock for him was only partially solved. Four rounds of various purposes were adopted, and a fifth was created. At the same time, the reasons for the appearance of the latter are not yet entirely clear on the reasons for the appearance. It can be an addition to other products or a replacement for one of them. There is no exact explanation on this subject yet.

However, all the options and explanations discussed are consistent with the importance and responsibility of the MHS program. Based on the results of all current work and procurement in the arsenal of the entire US Army, a full-fledged rifle complex with a modern pistol and a full range of necessary ammunition will fully meet the requirements.

    flat-shell live lead lead bullet

Well then, not a lively form.
In general, it’s rather mysterious about the cartridge. In fact, the cartridge is purely police, not army. He will strike an unprotected target, but I'm sorry, the same warrior holds splinters, but there’s nothing to say about army armor — such a bullet to them like an elephant shot. Once again - because police weapons and therefore police - his task is not to kill, but to stop. But the army - it is necessary to break through and kill.

DO NOT kill, but injure, and preferably a heavy-expansive bullet when unfolded inflicts severe wounds. When a leg is injured, shock occurs and the possibility of movement and reaction becomes extremely difficult, when you return to consciousness with a large loss of blood, what will happen? You can not continue ..

The bullet has a clear expansive notch. Such cartridges are prohibited on the basis of a declaration that was adopted in The Hague back in 1899, entered into force on July 29, 1899. Later, the ban on their use was repeated in 1907 by the Second Hague Peace Convention.
Nevertheless, they were used during WWI, bullets called the flowers of death, if they took a soldier with such cartridges in captivity, they were often shot with the same cartridges.

The bullets are similar to Nagan bullets, which had worse penetration characteristics than not only 7,62x25 TT, but also, all scolded, 9x18 PM. But in Nagan the use of such bullets was forced, due to the so-called obturation, but here a flat nose is not clear for what. For a more powerful expansive or stopping action?

The United States has not ratified many of the documents of the Hague Conventions, including the "Declaration of 1899 on the Abolition of Bullets That Are Easily Deployed or Flattened in the Human Body", so Americans have the right to use such bullets for military purposes.

Moreover, any state participating in hostilities with the United States (not important as an adversary or as an ally) has the right to use such bullets in connection with the corresponding legal clause in the Hague conventions.

It is high time for the Russian Armed Forces to adopt the expansive bullets for use in military conflicts involving the United States and other states that have not signed or ratified the Hague Conventions.

The exact requirements for XM1196 are unknown. Obviously, this will be the cartridge 9x19 mm Para. The bullet should have an expansive cavity and ensure the effective transfer of kinetic energy to the target. The cost of a cartridge with a new bullet is 31 cent apiece.
The exact requirements for the XM1196 are well known. It’s just that the author has copyrighted an article from Warzone, but the article is in an enemy language unknown to the author, and the gugledragoman gives nonsense incomprehensible to an individual who is far from understanding the issue.
In fact, the M1153 cartridge does not satisfy the army team for one simple reason - it does not pass the Brass Fetcher Ballistic Testing tests, as described in the article that the author copied, at the very beginning.
The new cartridge is "barrier blind," meaning that it can penetrate through certain types of obstacles, such as a window or a plywood door, first without expanding and losing much of its stopping power.
That the service is buying them at all would indicate that it is not entirely satisfied with the barrier penetration qualities of the existing M1153.
In short, the bottom line is that an expansive bullet must maintain shape when firing through certain obstacles: multi-layer clothing, an automobile body, drywall, plywood, car glass. And only after overcoming this obstacle, when hitting the target, the bullet should show its expansive properties. Such ammunition is already being produced, for example, Hornady 9mm Critical Duty Ammunition using FlexLock® technology.

Who will choose the army for the supply of such ammunition will determine the competition. Then it will be possible to talk about the specific characteristics of the cartridge.
As for the Hague Convention, to which there is a strong appeal, the USA did not sign it, but, as a rule, abided by its provisions. At the same time, the US military and special units consider it possible to use expansive ammunition in certain cases, based on the position that it is advisable to use these cartridges in battle when there is a “clear military necessity”.
In an article on Varzon, this question is also covered in detail, but is not available to the author. But in empty empty verbiage the author has no equal.

A hollow point bullet for the express rifle. Torn to pieces or "fragments".

New bullets have a high "stopping" effect, they can even "push" the attacker away from you and do not create fragments "fragments", which is important when providing medical assistance to the wounded.

Even if the attacker wears a bulletproof vest that will not be pierced, the impact of a bullet, not a "Makarov" one, will make the attacker lie down for a while, collect his thoughts.

LEGAL SUBSTANTIATION TO THE SECTION ON MILITARY CRIMES AND CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY ....
It has been argued that the Hague Convention is not applicable here in accordance with the clause on the extension of the Convention in Article 2 of the Hague Convention of 1907. This paragraph provided:

“The provisions contained in the land war rules referred to in article 1, as well as the rules of this convention, apply only to signatories and only if all warring parties are parties to this convention.”

Some warring parties in the last war were not parties to this convention.

According to the Tribunal, there is no need to resolve this issue. The rules of warfare on land formulated in the convention, undoubtedly, were a step forward compared with the existing international law at the time of its adoption. But the convention definitely establishes that it was an attempt to “revise the general laws and customs of war,” which it thus recognized as existing. However, in 1939, these rules set forth in the convention were recognized by all civilized peoples and were seen as expressing the laws and customs of warfare referred to in Article 6 (b) of the Charter ....

This decision of the specialized International Military Tribunal was aimed solely at creating a legal basis for the trial of Nazi criminals - regardless of the spread of the Hague Conventions during the Second World War, in which, among others, states that did not sign, did not ratify (like the United States) or quit from the Hague conventions (like the USSR).

The decision of the International Military Tribunal does not apply to military conflicts after the end of WWII (for example, the actions of UN troops in Korea or US troops in Indochina).

    Unrecognized MVT sentence not observed

See, for example, the US position on American war crimes in Korea and Vietnam, or on the same adoption by the US Army of ammunition with expansive bullets.

If some modern courts refer to the decisions of the International Military Tribunal in cases against non-Nazi war criminals, it’s only as a precedent, not a source of law, since the MVT was a very specific body that combined legislative and judicial functions - it worked out norms of law and he himself judged by them.

Additional evidence of the narrowly targeted purpose of the MVT is the withdrawal from the scope of its consideration of the actions of opponents of the German Reich in WWII from the point of view of violating the Hague conventions (guerrilla warfare, organization of the resistance movement, liquidation of representatives of the collaborative authorities, etc.). If such anti-conventional actions of German opponents on the Eastern Front and the Balkans were justified by the repressive policy of the German Reich towards the population of the occupied territories, then on the Western Front (France, Italy, Benelux, Denmark and Norway) there were no such grounds until 1944.

The ILO was a one-time decision of the victorious states, but based on the basic principle of the Hague Conventions - that in the event of a military conflict with the participation of their non-signatories, other legal standards apply, which was actually implemented by the victorious states in WWII.

The ILO was directed against German war criminals, that’s true, but the verdict and decisions are comprehensive.
And it applies to cases of war crimes charges against not only Germans, but also partisans, too.
There is a decision of the ECHR in the case of partisan Kononov, who was accused of a war crime in Latvia, the case was examined by the ECHR, and the first part of the sentence lists international legal acts on which the decision of the ECHR is based, including the quote from the MW that I quoted, a similar quote from the Tokyo Tribunal, and other decisions, including a conference of the 19th century, if I am not mistaken, formally not being adopted laws, but considered in that capacity.
If you don’t find it yourself, I’ll drop the link when I get to the computer, save it somewhere, look for it.
And, I think, you will not find official statements by the Americans that they will not comply with the convention, since they did not sign it. There will be completely different excuses, but the fact that they are not required to implement the convention, I doubt very much what you will find.
Try it yourself, you will understand ...

As for the unjustified support of Kononov’s conviction, based on the decisions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it would be right to prosecute the judges of the ECHR for aiding Nazi war criminals - given that such crimes do not have a statute of limitations.

As for the Americans, who did not recognize in practice the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I have already mentioned that what they say there is propaganda at the level of the words of a criminal who denies his acts.

If everything is correctly translated and understandable, then it is strange that there is no armor-piercing cartridge or subsonic. Absolutely not
But there is expansion, which is generally new, but the effectiveness of the impact of pistols will undoubtedly increase
By the way, it is not clear whether the SOCOM Mark23 remains in service with its 45, or does it remain?

SOCOM, USMC, US Army, etc. - these are all different offices bully
And the fact that the Army adopted a new pistol and new cartridges for itself does not mean anything to the rest. If they want it, they will also accept it, they don’t want to - they will remain with the armament available.
And about armor-piercing and sabsonikov - xs, apparently they are satisfied with the existing ones. Anyway, how often do army units use silenced pistols? KMK, this is a diocese of the same SOCOM, for example.

With all due respect to ammunition connoisseurs, the illustrated M1153 ammunition is not expansive. This is an ammunition for short-barreled small arms with fragmented throwing equipment. In other words: this is not an expansive, but a fragmentation bullet (if it hits the target it is fragmented due to a violation of integrity). Hello to the surgeons.
It was from such a bullet in Israel in 2018 that Ethiopian unrest arose. The policeman who shot Solomon Taco shot into the wall, the bullet was fragmented and one of the fragments hit the chest cavity and, as a result, the corpse. And the Israelis use ammunition as their own (fully copying American) and American-made.

Confused nothing? The most common expansion is "flower"

You haven’t confused this beauty here?

No, it can, of course, be fragmented - but if it hits a solid wall, this happens with any soft "police" bullet

You illustrated two different types of cartridges: at the top with a dum-dum-type bullet, and here at the bottom there is indeed a fragmentation bullet. But, your two options are not the combat M1153s described in the article.

the shape of the bullet is different, maybe there was a review and comparison with the dum-dum bullet on the site?

As part of a ballistic examination, I examined the ORS produced by the Barnaul cartridge plant and I declare responsibly: it is not fragmented!

It would be more correct for me to say "the bullet is deformed". And it all depends on the nature of the obstacle, the angle, the speed of the bullet, well, you yourself know.
And PRS, if it gets into a sufficiently thick metal sheet, or old brickwork, can easily break to smithereens ...
it’s completely lead, consider the shell not

    B7 greetings from Argentina.
Well, now, the Yankees have taken another "small step" with an expansive bullet.
Clear light that their army is a police army.
