Child of unification

Since the beginning of the 90's, the Russian army was no longer a key customer for automobile enterprises. Gorky Automobile Plant was no exception. The lion's share of the profit then (and now) was brought by the GAZelle lorry and the medium-tonnage GAZ-3309 (GAZON). Therefore, the rules in matters of defense order were dictated by engineers and marketers from Nizhny Novgorod rather than military officials from the Ministry of Defense. It is still difficult to understand for what reason they abandoned the cabless layout of the new car. Perhaps this was the wish of the military, taking into account the experience of the mine war in Afghanistan, or a simple unification with the civilian "Lawn". Most likely, the views of the military and the possibilities of the factory workers successfully converged. In any case, the development of the old GAZ-66 patterns using the aggregate base of commercial vehicles made it possible to reduce both costs and time.

One of the first prototypes of the GAZ-3309P

The first copies of the Shishigi successor, which appeared in the 1995 year, carried the 3309P index and consisted of hybrids from the frame, cab, controls from the bonnet "gas engine" and the GAZ-5441 turbodiesel, gearbox, transfer case, axles, wheels and the body from GAZ- 66-40. Due to the bonnet layout, the frame became longer, which increased the wheelbase, improved directional stability, but negatively affected maneuverability (the turning radius increased by 1 meter). Already in 1996, the car passed state tests and was adopted by the Russian army. A major advantage of the new light truck was the cost, comparable to the price of the GAZ-66-40 - these were the fruits of widespread unification with existing cars. A minus can be considered a civilian frame, not fully designed for high loads of army operation. In the final version, the new Shishiga received the name GAZ-3308 Sadko and was initially equipped with gasoline engines ZMZ-513.10 and ZMZ-5231.10 rated at 125-130 hp

GAZ-3308 "Sadko" in the Russian army

The diesel engine (moreover, from the tractor) on the Sadko appeared only in 2003 on the GAZ-33081 variant and developed 122 l. from. There were attempts to put in a small series trucks with a six-cylinder Steyr turbodiesel with an output of 150 l. with, but, for obvious reasons, such an army cannot be sold, but for commercial exploitation it turned out to be expensive and complicated. In addition, for an ancient transmission, the torque and power of a foreign motor were already excessive and, if handled inaccurately, were able to “break it”. GAZ-3308 received a funny feature as a legacy from Shishigi: when the front axle was turned on, it was necessary to move the car back and forth so that the gears engaged. At the same time as the military version, the civilian version of Sadko was launched into production, equipped with simpler wheels (clearance decreased as a result) and devoid of tire inflation with pneumatic outlet to the trailer.

MLRS SAKR in Egyptian performance

The machine came to taste not only in the Russian army, but also in Ukraine, in Egypt, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia. “Sadko” was delivered to Syria in the middle of the 2000’s and has now become one of the symbols of the confrontation between the army and terrorist organizations. On Syrian soil, GAZ-3308 was used as an artillery tractor, a platform for anti-aircraft guns, and even as a carrier of the GOLAN 400 MLRS. The network also showed photos of the Sadko army with an 57-mm ZIS-2 gun in the back. In total, under the contracts for the 2007 year, the Gorky Automobile Plant delivered about 2000 trucks to Syria.

In 2014, the first information appeared about the next generation of "Sadko", which received the prefix "Next". We can say that in the last generation the truck stood a notch higher - load capacity increased to 3 tons. The cabin is now unified with the Lawn-Next family and is truly truly comfortable. The Yaroslavl YaMZ-534 diesel engine with an output of almost 150 l is installed at Sadko-Next. with., and a real highlight was the push-button transmission control system.

Pickup "Huntsman Next" and the bus "Boar Next" hope for a military future

Experience evolution: Sadko Next workplace and GAZ-66-40

Among the numerous modifications of the Sadko, the GAZ-3325 Huntsman and the GAZ-3902 Vepr became the most unusual. In the first case, this is a huge pickup truck with a two-row cab, and in the second - a car with an all-metal passenger body for five or twelve people. Two years ago, the second generation of these cars made their debut with a very peculiar facial expression - trucks received intricate headlights from the Vector Next bus. Such equipment cannot be called completely military, but in Nizhny Novgorod they really hope for army orders and regularly exhibit "Huntsman" and "Boar" on the "Army" forums.

Fantasies on the topic and successors

GAZ-66 is gradually leaving the Armed Forces of Russia - cars are being sold from conservation sites, replenishing the fleet of private traders throughout the country. The former countries of the eastern bloc are also gradually getting rid of the Soviet heritage, realizing Shishigi almost all over the world. Recently appeared newsthat GAZ-66 from the Hungarian army's storerooms appeared on sale in the United States. Availability of spare parts, unpretentiousness and unique cross-country ability allowed various design bureaus to develop their vision of the new “Shishigi” over time. One of the most striking such examples was the GAZ-66 Partizan, which can be distinguished from the overseas Hummer H1 only by close acquaintance. The domestic clone of the American jeep appeared in 2003, inherited from Shishigi a shortened frame, an aggregate base and individual body elements. Of course, I had to thoroughly redraw the layout of the truck, change the suspension to a lighter body and limit myself to installing all 4 seats. The most interesting thing is that they built the car at the Gorky Automobile Plant, obviously, in search of new market niches. According to another version, “Partizan” appeared in the club of amateur enthusiasts from Nizhny Novgorod and to a greater extent was just a show car, released in a very limited edition.

GAZ-66 "Partizan"

At the beginning of the 2000-s, the GAZ-66 aggregate base formed the basis of the huge 12-local SUV "Barkhan", combining the comfort of a car and the remarkable cross-country ability of an army all-terrain vehicle. This technique in various variations was produced for specific orders and was not widely used.

"Barkhan"

GAZ-66 was largely created for the Airborne Forces, but now the winged infantry is finally getting rid of the legendary car - the most lightweight KamAZs of the Mustang family are being replaced. In particular, the KamAZ-43501 model with a shortened platform and the ability to airborne landing. You can distinguish from a conventional KAMAZ 4x4 airborne vehicle by a lowered loading platform and wheel-mounted niches. Of course, this is a completely different truck - it has more power (240 hp) and its load capacity has been increased to 3 tons.

KamAZ-43501 for the Airborne Forces is the successor of the Shishigi in the winged infantry

To replace the "Sadko" and GAZ-66 in the border troops of Belarus in 2014 year was built MZKT-5002 00 "Volat". It is interesting that the military initially turned to the Minsk Automobile Plant for help, but they refused to contact a small-scale order. They agreed to help at the capital’s wheeled tractor plant and developed a lightweight version of the truck from the famous Volat (Bogatyr) series. In many ways, this is a complete analogue of the Russian KamAZ for the Airborne Forces, it is equipped with an 215 ‑ strong YaMZ ‑ 53452 turbodiesel and a completely independent suspension of all wheels.

"Shishiga" in Belarusian

Despite the fact that the descendants of the GAZ-66 were ousted from the ranks of the Airborne Forces, the platform still has a future. Machines of the Next series will not only soon appear in the Russian army, but are also actively offered in export markets, in particular, in Indonesia and the Philippines.

    The author, I agree with you completely. Before retirement, he worked in geological exploration and something can be added. For some reason, gasoline versions didn’t take root in us, here are diesel versions, they went well with the MMZ D-245 diesel engine, I can’t say anything about the YaMZ-534 diesel engine, I did not have to deal with it. The review is interesting, I liked it, I learned a lot of new things, especially about the latest developments of the designers of GAZ or NAZ, it seems like they call the plant now.

      I think that the "shishiga" should have been equipped with a modern, powerful and compact diesel engine and a normal gearbox. Well, make the cabin more convenient for the driver and passenger. And I would have served for 50 years. And so, we spent a lot of money - at the output we got the same thing, only in the hood layout.

            Agree that Motor Sich is a different state. We left a lot of things in the Union Republics, including Ukraine. This time. The firm "Robert Bosch" does not want to localize the production of fuel equipment in the Russian Federation. "CJSC CUMMINS KAMA" is a joint venture created by the corporations PJSC "KAMAZ" and Cummins Inc. in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny, for the production of diesel engines intended for small and medium-duty vehicles, "firstly, recently built, and secondly - also buys fuel equipment abroad. https://www.cummins-kama.ru/rus/aboutt/

              I do not argue that it is different, especially since I live in it and work on the "Motor". He gave as an example that if there was a desire, then there is nothing difficult. The same factories that produce diesel engines could simply "quietly, rip off" some compact diesel engine with a gearbox, Japanese or German.

                Moreover, you cannot but know that for the production of ICE you need specialized equipment specifically: multi-position machines for processing a cylinder block. crankshaft, block head. This equipment is difficult to reconfigure and operates in a narrow range of sizes: for example, VAZ 2101-2111 engines. They have two basic sizes: a cylinder diameter of 76 -79mm and a piston stroke of 66-80mm, a whole gamut of engines has been made.
                Here under these parameters production lines were created. The transition to other sizes requires new equipment, which is not cheap. That is why the motor are trying to hold on to old equipment. Another example, YaMZ. When the in-line production of 6-cylinder Renault engines was acquired, an almost new engine production had to be built in Tutaevo. (Not to be confused with the TMZ motor plant, these are different products).

                  Are there no such machines at the engine factory? Part of the operations was scattered around the machining workshops that the aircraft parts did. In addition to aircraft engines, the plant makes a lot of consumer goods - from blowtorches and meat grinders, to motor blocks and outboard motors. Everything is possible. there would be a desire.

                    Well, you perfectly understand that the engine is not consumer goods, and you also know how the army orders and receives. Even a tighter blowtorch or meat grinder for an army canteen. And the more massive engine for the army.

      Such machines "in the field" can be forgiven for the hardships and hardships associated with their operation. But when this technique has to "march" over a long distance on asphalt (sometimes you still have to get to the "field"), it is easier to put it on a trawl, which entails additional costs. This pushes KamAZ towards, despite the significant difference in cost - everything will pay off when it is possible to avoid just a few such transportation across the whole of Mother Russia.

            Did you measure the width of the gauge with the tape measure?

    There would be another 0,5 kg \ cm2 of air forced to pump during the passage of fords (bridges, box), water enters, an oil suspension forms. Unimog even in the headlights feed is :(

      Where is it going? Ours have a forced blocking of the crankcase ventilation .., and for boxes and bridges the ventilation is displayed outside the cab .. to the height of the air intake of the motor ...

        Uh ... Breathers are a good thing, but when overcoming the ford, due to the temperature difference, the seals, the metal is compressed, suck in water. Emulsion in gear bridges-kirdyk. Nissan Safari is expensive (as is the GL-5 oil change). GAS, of course, will be cheaper. But money doesn’t repair anything in battle. PYSYA: I have breathers in the frame and snorkel (Do not go to battle on Safar, I hope). And so, traveled on fords, checked the oil.

        where did you read that?

        In the factory equipment - is it displayed?
        These are all sorts of craftsmen and cooperatives / firms - they make self-made kits for removing pipes from breathers ...
        In all other respects, nothing is output and nothing is pumped.

            I have in operation 3 of the most modern cars: 2 Sadko and 1 Huntsman ...
            They got stuck with the penetration of water into all bridges.
            We change oil, we change oil seals. we change bearings - we change everything.
            Golden cow damn it turns out.

            About workmanship - I’m ready to drive an aspen stake to everyone. which indicates their reliability ...
            To those. who says about their magical patency - the second count.

            Machines work like this
            2pcs - in the region of Nizhny Tagil,
            1 in the Uvat area.

              I have in operation MAZ Zubrenok .. One of the sore spots of the checkpoint .. which is like sandy sanding, changed three .. and then one day .. we got the checkpoint from the last issues of ZIL-157 .... year of manufacture 1979 .., I went on a timber truck .. Well, they sorted it out ... I don’t even see such bearings in the store now, the axial play is -0 ... really zero .. Just put it back and put it on the car .., the feeling was that they put the gearbox from the Mercedes ... So you don’t need to compare army all-terrain vehicles and consumer goods .. I crawled out onto the ZIL with a shit winch .. in general I stood up to my chest in the water when s out of the cab .. Picking around for an hour and a half .. water in the bridges did not appear .. year of manufacture ZIL 1970th ..

    The Zyryanin-111 all-terrain vehicle is also made on the basis of Gaz-66 components and assemblies, only the aluminum body, is equipped with a domestic front-wheel drive VAZ engine, or a Toyota diesel engine, 1600x700x635 wheels of domestic manufacturer Trekol, allow the car to sail with a load of 800kg, Gaz-66 chassis (axles) , cardans, transfer case) allow the car to move on asphalt at a speed of 75 km \ hour, and on complete impassability with a minimum speed of 1 km \ hour. The machine is used in the far north, where there is a complete lack of roads, and in the summer you can only move on such machines.

    You can still experiment with nez. Suspension, on Kamaz there are such developments. The car will become lighter by 1-1,5 tons.

    It's time, not all soldiers have titanium vertebrae like a terminator.

    The Japanese in their Toyota Mega Cruiser, gracefully beat the independent suspension without compromising reliability, and added the ability to turn the rear wheels (less turning radius).
    That was a long time ago...

    Thanks to the author. Especially for the photo.
    On this unit, I rode pretty (at the time) as a driver. Rights are simple (at least I had some at that time). A regular carrier was busy (I do not remember already) with something more important.
    The engine was gasoline (it was about the year '98-99). He was Troilus and had two visions on which the world stood. But then, I thought that the machine is a beast!
    And what ergonomics !! .. It's something! Mirrors! ... What a view backward divine !. And the doors ... How deliciously the doors closed !!! With a delicious click.! Divine machine.
    The steering wheel was only a little tight compared to the '53. I also replaced the driver on it. But it's probably just the settings of the car.

    The funny thing is that at the very beginning of the journey, back in the 50s, there was an idea to create an analog Dodge 3 \ 4 laughing

    However, in the course of improvement, enlargement and optimization, they finally came to the 7-ton Sadko-Next. But the heavy jeep did not appear here. The Belarusians won Chinese buy.

    Jesus Mary !!! Looked closely at the gun on the lawn in Syria - this is the famous anti-tank ZIS-2! Looks like ours, even from the storerooms. When the deliveries started, I somehow caught a glimpse of the news on the unloading truck, whose open boxes were visible around ... I then rubbed my eyes - DP-27 machine guns!)))

    GAZ 3308:
    - dead frame;
    - creepy cab ergonomics;
    - dead engine on gasoline;
    - bad iron from which cabs are made;
    - huge engine appetite (gasoline);
    - weak steering;
    - filthy electrician;
    - normal cross;
    - all!...

    Concerning the lighting equipment of cars that are supplied to the security forces, blocking lights are a bad decision. Inconvenient access to them for replacing lamps, fragile plastic fasteners, their constant fogging and incredible absorption of moisture in the housing, high cost. The wish to the designers is not to put blocking lights at all.

    Regarding the parts used in the assembly of cars supplied to the security forces - what kind of pest thought up on such cars to save fuel with indicators of Euro 2 and higher? And what kind of deer did you think of putting CHINESE components in the transmission nodes ??? For this I want to tap on the turnip to the pepper that arranged this get along.
