Following the change in sergeant ranks in the armed forces of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada decided to take up the generals and make some changes, bringing them in line with those adopted in NATO. It is reported by the Ukrainian military portal.
Bill No. 2247 of the 09.10.2019 of the year was introduced in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, providing for the introduction of new general ranks in the Ukrainian army. In order to get away from the "Soviet" system of ranks and come closer to NATO standards, the existing ranks of the army general and colonel general are canceled. Instead of Colonel-General, the title "general" is introduced, it also becomes the oldest military rank in the Armed Forces. Also introduced are the military ranks of the brigadier general and commander-admiral, which previously were not in the armed forces of Ukraine.
According to the same law, a “pan” or “pani” appeal is introduced when addressing the Minister of Defense of Ukraine and his deputies, who are civilians. When applying, a soldier must pronounce the word "pan" (pani), and then add their position.
Another change is the replacement of the name "regiment" with "brigade" and, accordingly, the regiment commander will now be called the brigade commander.
The main goal of the adopted law is to abandon the Soviet system of ranks, which, according to Ukrainian lawmakers, is not suitable for the professional Ukrainian army, as well as to adapt ranks in the Armed Forces to NATO standards.
