In the United States, a new bill is being drafted to impose sanctions against Turkey and Russia. A proposal was made by two senior senators of the Committee on Foreign Relations, Jim Rich and Robert Menendez. This was reported on the committee website.
US senators have prepared a bill providing for the imposition of sanctions against Turkey due to the start of a military operation in Syria. The document provides for the introduction of restrictions on the sale of Turkey weapons, sanctions against Turkish officials, as well as those who sell weapons to Ankara. In addition, senators propose to consider the issue of Turkey’s membership in NATO.
By the same bill, senators propose introducing new sanctions against Russia, justifying this with its "harmful actions" in Syria, which consist in supporting Bashar al-Assad. What kind of restrictions they want to introduce against Russia are not reported.
The proposed restrictions against Turkey and Russia are presented by US senators as "confronting the instability they sow in the Middle East."
Earlier it was reported that Washington had already imposed sanctions against Turkey because of the start of a military operation in northern Syria. The restrictions affected two ministries and three ministers. Trump also decided to increase steel duties for Turkey to 50%. In addition, there is another bill under consideration that envisages the imposition of sanctions against Turkey in connection with its operation, Source of Peace. It provides for restrictions on the Turkish president and members of his cabinet, sanctions against the Turkish energy sector. It is proposed to ban US military cooperation with Ankara and impose sanctions on Turkey’s acquisition of Russian S-400 air defense systems.
