In search of a Russian submarine: in Sweden found the source of the encoded signal
The large-scale military operation of the Swedish Navy, which began in October 2014, to search for the alleged Russian submarine in the territorial waters of Sweden and ended in nothing, brought the Swedish military nothing but additional costs for the operation and the conviction that "the submarine was there." But as it turned out, all this time the military was looking for a faulty meteorological buoy, which sent this encoded radio signal.
In October 2014, the crew of a Swedish submarine patrolling the territorial waters of the country south of the Stockholm archipelago intercepted an encoded radio signal, allegedly sent from a foreign submarine in the waters of Sweden. The country's Ministry of Defense initiated a large-scale operation to search for a submarine, it was assumed that a Russian mini-submarine penetrated into the territorial waters of Sweden. Searches were carried out for two weeks, 1,8 million euros were spent on them, but nothing was found. However, Swedish Minister of Defense Peter Hultqvist said that "confirmation was received that there was a foreign submarine in the waters of Sweden."
As it turned out later, the signal was sent by a faulty weather sensor, and the error was that the crew of the Swedish submarine, intercepting it, incorrectly determined the direction of the signal.
- said one of the participants in the operation to search for a foreign submarine.
The Swedish Meteorological Service confirmed that a weather beacon that had failed in the Baltic Sea sent a signal of its malfunction. Its encoded transmission was intended for the second buoy, located near the Stockholm archipelago and it was she who was intercepted by a submarine of the Swedish Navy.
According to the journalists of the publication, the Minister of Defense and the government of the country learned about the real source of the signal in May 2015, however, due to bureaucratic red tape, the parliament was informed only four months after that, without disclosing the details of the incident and after approving the increase in defense spending 923 million euros, including the search for foreign submarines.
