US Marine Corps begins testing non-lethal 81 mm caliber mines
The Marine Corps began testing mortar shells of the caliber 81-mm with non-lethal impact. As explained in the United Directorate for non-lethal arms, such ammunition is becoming increasingly popular in the "gray zones", where the use of conventional weapons is excessive, but it is impossible to resolve the conflict peacefully. This mainly applies to the African continent, where ethnic and religious conflicts constantly occur.
said Colonel Wendell Leimbach, head of the Joint Directorate for Non-lethal Weapons.
The characteristics of the new non-lethal projectile are not given, but, presumably, they should correspond to the standard 81-mm caliber mine for the M252A1 marine mortar, adopted for service in the 1987 year. The mass of the mine is 4,2 kg, the minimum firing range is 83 m, and the maximum range is 5600 meters. Ammunition filling - 14 stun grenades.
Leimbach said that the American army is in dire need of non-lethal weapons, such as, for example, a remote electromagnetic stop system for vehicle engines, which are being tested, as well as other developments. For some reason, he cited Russia as an example of the use of non-lethal means.
- said the colonel.
