Bundeswehr troops transferred to fight bark beetle
The military could not assume that on the basis of the order of the responsible minister, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer would start a new business for themselves. She herself offered to help the local authorities in this field. As a result, the work of the military is coordinated by certified foresters.
The soldiers have a slightly different schedule of service than in places of constant basing. Accommodation and meals are provided by the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Every morning, troops leave on their all-terrain vehicles in areas of forested areas controlled by municipalities. On-site assistance is provided by enterprises engaged in logging. The main task of the military is to search for trees infected by the bark beetle and fight against the pest beetle.
Soldiers with saws and axes demolish the forest, remove the bark, and then burn it. All this is carried out under the leadership of forestry workers.
