T-90M: a fast past and a great future

55
Just a few years ago, NPK Uralvagonzavod introduced a new version of the modernization of the main combat tank T-90A called T-90M. In the future, the new equipment was tested, interested the army and became the subject of a real contract. Recently it became known about the completion of the modernization of the first production T-90M and the transfer of this equipment to the troops.

Novelty in the troops

About the imminent start of production of the T-90M and the quick transfer of equipment to parts it became known a long time ago. Now there is information about the beginning of the service of such machines. This was told by the Commander-in-Chief of the Army General of the Army Oleg Salyukov in an interview with the Red Star, published on the last day of September.

The commander noted that various models of armored vehicles are now being purchased for motorized rifle and tank units. Among them, he called the modernized MBT T-90M. The re-equipment of the parts is intensive, and the high technical characteristics are confirmed by practice.

The number of tanks already received and the units where they are sent to serve have not yet been specified. Perhaps this kind of information will appear later, for example, in the context of exercises.

Fast rates

Our tanks are fast not only in terms of mobility, but also in terms of the time required for the development and implementation of the project. From the start of design work on the T-90M to the launch of serial modernization, only a few years have passed. In this regard, the T-90M is one of the most successful modern developments in the field of MBT.

The development work of Proryv-3 to create a new version of the MBT T-90A started in the middle of the current decade. By the beginning of 2017, a prototype was prepared with a number of characteristic features, a photograph of which soon came into the public domain. During 2017, the T-90M tank repeatedly became the subject of various statements and publications.

The prototype T-90M shown in 2017

As part of the Army-2017 forum, the first contract was signed for the production of 10 T-90M tanks from scratch and the restructuring of 20 cash T-90M. At that time, the equipment was tested, but there were already plans to launch a full-scale release. A little later it became known that the manufacturer would give the first samples to 2018. A similar contract was signed for Army-2018.

At the end of June this year within the framework of “Army-2019” signed an even more important agreement. According to this agreement, NPK Uralvagonzavod should receive significant quantities of T-90A tanks from the army and rebuild them according to the T-90M project. The Ministry of Defense and UVZ did not immediately disclose the details of the contract. The media featured unofficial information about the restructuring of 100 tanks. Both MBT T-90A and older T-90 base models can be sent for repair and modernization.

According to the latest news, the army has already received the first tanks of the new model. However, the quantity, specific operator and method of manufacture are unknown. However, it is clear that this is only the first step in the new phase of a larger program. The “Breakthrough-3” project has been successfully brought to practical implementation and gives results in the context of updating the fleet.

Future future

According to recent news, there are three contracts for the supply of MBT T-90M. From official and unofficial sources, it is known about the desire of the Ministry of Defense to get armored vehicles of both new construction and redone from the existing one. In this case, the bulk of the T-90M should be produced precisely by rework.

According to reports, the three contracts of the Ministry of Defense and NPK “UVZ” provide for the delivery of a new model 160 MBT. 10 armored vehicles from the 2017 contract should be built from scratch. The 2018 order ordered the construction of 30 new tanks. Thus, within a few years, the contractor must build 40 brand new MBT T-90M.

T-90M at testing in 2019

In parallel, cash upgrades of the T-90 and T-90A will be carried out. Under the 2017 contract, such procedures will go through 20 armored vehicles. Another 100 may be negotiated with the newest contract. However, the known details of the 2019 order have not yet received official confirmation, and we can talk about a larger batch of equipment. In addition, there is no information on the possibility of upgrading T-90 tanks.

Over the next few years, the Russian army will receive about 160 T-90M tanks. This will allow for the rearmament of several ground forces. In the future, the production of such MBTs may continue in the interests of other parts.

According to well-known data, about 350 MBT T-90 and T-90A are currently being operated in combat units of our army. About a third of this amount of equipment will undergo modernization; 40 tanks of new construction will also be added to them. The fate of the remaining 200-220 T-90 old versions is unknown. Probably, over time, repairs and modernization will reach them.

According to the results of the T-90M Proryv-3 project, the state of the armored vehicles fleet will seriously improve. At a minimum, a significant proportion of units will be transferred to the updated T-90M and T-72Б3 tanks that meet modern requirements. Thus, the army gets the opportunity to build the capacity of tank formations without the purchase of completely new equipment. The proposed modernization combines high technical characteristics and a reasonable cost of work.

Technical aspects

MBT T-90M, which was the result of the OKR "Breakthrough-3", is of great interest to the army. This modernization involves the use of a number of new components and assemblies that seriously increase the tactical and technical characteristics of the equipment. At the same time, the existing platform is undergoing the project, undergoing only the necessary changes.

Test firing. In sidebar - interior of the fighting compartment

The survivability of the T-90M is enhanced by redesigning reservations and installing a set of attachments in the form of “Relict” dynamic protection and cutting screens. The layout of the internal compartments has been redesigned to reduce the likelihood of damage to the crew and important devices. In the future, it is possible to introduce a complex of active protection - at the request of the customer. Mobility is enhanced by the engine V-92С2Ф power 1130 hp Attention is paid to the comfort of the crew, for which there is a heater and air conditioning.

The Proryv-3 project proposed replacing the 2A46 gun with the 2A82-1M caliber 125 mm caliber. Also demonstrated was a prototype that retained full-time weapons. The Kalina fire control system with modern surveillance and guidance tools is used. Large-caliber anti-aircraft machine gun transferred to a remotely controlled combat module.

Based on the results of this modernization, the T-90M tank gains a number of major advantages over the basic MBT T-90A or over the older T-90. Provides higher mobility. Front projection is protected from modern anti-tank weapons; other parts of the tank are able to withstand shelling from infantry weapons. The new weapons in combination with an improved SLA ensures the use of any available shells and missiles in the entire range of ranges.

Exhibitions and troops

The general public learned about the existence of the Proryv-3 OKR and the T-90M tank only a few years ago. By this time, the project managed to go through some of the early stages, and in the near future the first order for the supply of serial equipment appeared. At the same time, experienced MBTs were demonstrated at exhibitions and other events.

The industry successfully copes with the orders of the military department and transfers the finished equipment to it. Fulfillment of at least part of the existing contracts will significantly increase the combat effectiveness of tank units and will affect the potential of the ground forces. Apparently, the release of the necessary T-90M tanks will also not take much time, and the planned re-equipment will be completed within the next few years.

With the T-14 it will be possible as well as with the Su-57. As soon as the tests are completed, the equipment is approved and the price is determined, contracts will also appear. The most important thing is to complete the tests.

It was something like this, but after it became clear what kind of equipment it would be and there was confidence that the refinement would not take much time and that no design changes would be required. And this, in turn, allowed to determine the price.

The promising Russian T-14 Armata tank turned out to be too expensive for mass purchases, and the main battle tank T-72, which is in service with the Russian army, is a completely modern combat vehicle, said Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov.

The concept of "too expensive" needs to be concretized. There is the cost of a single machine. In principle, it cannot be low. There is a machine cost per batch. It strongly depends on the number of ordered cars. The more ordered, the lower the cost. For some reason, the Su-57 dropped significantly in price before the contract was signed. As a result, 12 aircraft were ordered instead of 76.

Who said there wasn’t enough money on the T-90? Old modifications of the T-90 will certainly not be purchased anymore - it makes no sense. And the volume of purchases of the T-90M will depend not only on its price, but also on the price and the planned scope and timing of purchases of the T-14. And of the 25 years for which you speak, 20 years of procurement were single in all types of weapons, and not only on tanks. Remain the last 5 years ...

Everyone is confused in the T-90, even the generals.
The Russian army presents tanks of the 90s family. This is the T-90, A, C, SA, T, ST, M, SM, SA, AM, AK, SKA, even there are E who didn’t leave under the contract, and for sure I forgot something else.))
They differ mainly in the various sights installed, radio stations, thermal imagers, guns, fire fighting equipment, there are even different welded towers - cast ones, reinforced reservations, active protection, air conditioners and alterations for commander tanks.
And only the T-90 M, or as it is called "Breakthrough", is radically different from the entire family. It has a tower module of a new design with multi-layer armor, with ammunition storage located outside the fighting compartment and with a 125-mm 2A82-1M cannon, the same as that of the T-14 "Armata", with an increased barrel length. It also has a different engine. The tank is equipped with a V-92S2F monoblock power plant with a capacity of 1130 hp. from. Also, in the tank hull, in order to increase survivability, the placement of fuel and ammunition was optimized, screens were introduced to protect the crew, ammunition and equipment from being hit by a secondary stream of fragments.

And where to rush? Let the tank lick not when it is already in the series - which was almost on all Soviet and foreign tanks. And also at the stage of the test series.
Here, for example, the T-64 was launched into series in 1964, and brought to full condition with the cure of childhood diseases only by 1973 already having riveted one and a half thousand cars that had to be redone already in the army. For a completely fundamentally new type of combat vehicle with many innovations. The T-14 carries more innovations than the T-64, so let it be quietly finalized.

Starting with the T-90A, there is a welded tower with a frontal part at a right angle, the wedge is formed by the VDZ parts (on the T-90M Relic) to increase their efficiency.

What is now called the T-14 will remain a project or an "active demonstrator." Even if "this is it", will be purchased in series, then for parades and to create admiration among the public. The new MBT of Russia, really put into service, will not be at all what we all saw at the parades. That car will have to wait. And now it is the T-90M. True, this machine is not for defense, but for a breakthrough. A breakthrough is always a preemptive strike or aggression. And unjustifiably large losses if the enemy did not sleep.

I do not agree. First: the car is not included in the railway gauge, you have to remove it. Second: the log will be damaged when moving in limited dimensions. Yes, and the log protected from collisions from behind. It is not visible how to press the log to the body, no stops are visible. Well this is my opinion, an old techie.

No more than a couple of hundred T-90M is obtained. That is, the poor T-72B3 remain the main tank. When will the new main tank finally appear?

Because mass purchases of T-14 is not expected, why not install combat modules (towers) from T-72M on the modernized T-80 and T-90 (conditionally T-72/90 and T-80/90). Yes, on the one hand, this will lead to a rise in the cost of modernized tanks, and on the other, with the mass production of towers, the T-90 will become cheaper. In the future there is the possibility of modernization, similarly, of the Algerian and Indian T-72 and early T-90, and this is several thousand more tanks. In terms of combat effectiveness, the T-72/90 will be slightly inferior to the T-90, but significantly exceed the T-72, and the export potential (for developing countries) is high.

And there was such a T-92 project for a new gun, why was it forgotten?

T92 are American projects of experimental self-propelled guns and LT.
There was an experimental tank Object 292 with a 152mm gun (it was created to develop the concept of installing 152mm guns in serial tanks and nothing more, it was not planned in the series).

It is clear that there is no news about the T 14, the test has passed, are they preparing for mass production? Or no money ....

Why laugh at the troops of 2000 T-72, and T-90 from the beginning of production in the 90s to the present time only 500 units were able to purchase, and I recall 25 years have passed ...
What is the T-14 if there is not enough money even for the notorious T-90

Who said there wasn’t enough money on the T-90? Old modifications of the T-90 will certainly not be purchased anymore - it makes no sense. And the volume of purchases of the T-90M will depend not only on its price, but also on the price and the planned scope and timing of purchases of the T-14. And of the 25 years for which you speak, 20 years of procurement were single in all types of weapons, and not only on tanks. Remain the last 5 years ...

If there is enough money for the T-90M, why the hell did you have to mold the T-72B72 out of 3? which is clearly worse than the T-90M. they have a compatible base (unlike the T-80) so why not convert the old 72s into the T-90M right away. Replace turret, gun engine and SLA

"Over the next few years, the Russian army will receive about 160 T-90M tanks." - isn't that sabotage?
