US missile defense elements located in Europe will receive new SM-3 Block IIA interceptor missiles. The start of serial production of the latest interceptor missiles was announced by Director of the US Department of Defense Missile Defense Agency Vice Admiral Navy John Hill.
Serial production of the latest SM-3 Block IIA interceptor missiles, designed to equip Aegis Ashore missile defense systems, begins in the United States. According to Director of the ABM Agency, John Hill, these missiles will become the "central element of the US missile defense system," deployed, including in Poland and Romania.
Last week, I was encouraged that we decided on the initial production of the SM-3 Block IIA. We are moving towards serial production of these missiles
- declared vice-admiral.
According to Hill, the new missiles can "neutralize long-range threats," and the local command will receive more tools to create an echelon defense system against ballistic missiles.
Successful trials of the SM-3 Block IIA interceptor missile were reported last fall. According to the report, the new missile is equipped with high-sensitivity sensor equipment, an effective system of "rejecting" false targets. SM-3 Block IIA has an increased range and speed compared to previous versions. It is stated that the flight speed is up to 4,5 km / s, and the ultimate range of hitting a target is 2,7 thousand km.
