34
Today, UN Secretary General Antonio Gutteres announced the creation of the Constitutional Committee of Syria. It is noteworthy that this happened a few days after the summit of the leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran. Then in Ankara, the parties of the so-called Astana format came to a common opinion that in the SAR it is necessary to move on to political processes, including the formation of the very Constitutional Committee.
Gutteres said he was pleased to announce the consensus between the Syrian government and the so-called Syrian Negotiating Committee to create a "credible and widely represented Constitutional Committee."
The UN Secretary General noted that Geneva will be the first platform on which this committee, with the consent of the parties, will begin work. Recall that in Geneva is one of the missions of the United Nations.
Today in Damascus, the UN Secretary General’s special envoy meets with Foreign Minister Valid Muallem. According to some reports, the Syrian side is ready for negotiations with opposition forces - those that are really ready for a peaceful building of the political system of Syria and who will not engage in provocations, including those leading to new armed clashes in Syria itself.
Official Damascus notes that the platform where the Constitutional Committee will begin to work is not so important, the result of its work is important.
