The most expensive airplanes in the world conduct exercises near the borders of Russia
The US Air Force deployed its strategic stealth B-2 Spirit bombers to Europe. Now the most expensive aircraft in the world (the cost of one unit, including R&D, is about 2,1 billion dollars) conduct exercises in Norway.
In addition to the B-2 Spirit, the US Air Force F-15C fighters, as well as the F-35B from the British Air Force take part in the maneuvers. It was reported that the exercises were coordinated with the Norwegian government. 3 of the B-2 aircraft (82-1068, 89-0129, 82-1071), which are part of the Target Bomber Group, were deployed to the United Kingdom at the end of August along with the B-52 strategic bomber.
Bombers are deployed as part of the Europe’s Security Initiative, launched five years ago. Its goal is integration into a potential theater of operations with NATO's European allies. It is assumed that the deployment of additional strategic forces closer to the borders of Russia will act as a deterrent and “inspire confidence” in the US partners in the North Atlantic bloc.
For operational security purposes, the US European Command, which now has aircraft at its disposal, refuses to discuss training areas and patrols of stealth bombers without revealing, they are somewhat close to the Russian borders.
Special hangars and coverage for 60 million
Currently participating in flight training B-2 deployed on the basis of the Royal Air Force in Fairford (UK). It is there that there are special hangars that can prevent damage to the sensitive coating of strategic bombers. Its complete restoration, carried out once every seven years, costs 60 million dollars per unit.
The uniqueness of these exercises is that for the first time, B-2 conducts training with non-air force aircraft. The strategic stealth bomber that entered service in the 1997 was created according to the “flying wing” scheme. The machine is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear charges.
In total, an 21 aircraft was produced, of which 1 was lost in the crash, 20 is out of order by paper.
