Already in the middle of the 20 century, the topic of hypersound became especially popular. Then we were talking about a large research program, which was to provide valuable information, both for military and civilian use in the United States.
60 years ago, flight tests of the world's first manned flying vehicle, the North American X-15 experimental rocket plane capable of developing hypersonic speed and performing suborbital flight, began. These were the first steps to full hypersound.
It all started in November 1955, when, according to the results of the competition among aircraft manufacturers, North American signed a contract for the construction of 3 manned aircraft X-15. After three years, in June 1959, flight tests began.
The North American X-15 hypersonic experimental rocket plane owns unofficial altitude and speed records that were set for manned aircraft of the time.
