Seoul breaks intelligence agreement with Tokyo
According to a South Korean official, the South Korean government has decided to withdraw the country from an agreement on the exchange of intelligence information with Japan amid worsening relations between the countries. Kim Yu Geun explained that trust between the countries was undermined and further cooperation in this area no longer meets the interests of Seoul.
he said at a briefing.
- stressed the South Korean official.
It should be noted that recently relations between South Korea and Japan have deteriorated significantly against the background of a long-standing dispute regarding the period of the Japanese occupation of Korea, which lasted from 1910 to 1945 year. The fact is that the Supreme Court of Korea satisfied the single claim of 98-year-old Lee Chun Shik, brought against the Japanese authorities for 90 thousand dollars as compensation for slave labor in occupied Korea for the benefit of Japan. Tokyo refused to recognize the lawsuit, fearing that this case would become a legal precedent in which not only former workers from Korea occupied by Japan, but also their relatives and descendants would begin to demand compensation for the labor they used.
And then Japan tightened control over the export to South Korea of three types of materials necessary for the production of semiconductors and screens of various electronic devices, explaining this with suspicions that "part of these components may be illegally supplied to the DPRK." Seoul imposed similar restrictions on supplies to Japan.
Then, Japan removed South Korea from the list of countries to which Japanese nanomaterials and high-tech components are supplied without restrictions on simplified schemes.
There is also a dispute between countries over sovereignty over the Takeshima Islands (the South Korean name of Dokdo), which each of the countries has declared its own.
