“Verba” and “Barnaul-T”: protection of troops in the near zone

44
A few years ago, the Russian army adopted the 9K333 Verba portable anti-aircraft missile system. It is designed to organize air defense units and gradually replaces older models. Technical, operational and combat advantages over the Strela and Igla families are ensured both by the growth of characteristics and by improving control systems.

Tactical and technical advantages

The “Verba” MANPADS includes a new anti-aircraft guided missile 9M336, which has a number of characteristic features and is characterized by improved characteristics. While maintaining the general ideology laid down in previous projects, this missile has a different composition of components and is made on a modern elemental base. All this leads to an increase in flight performance and an increase in basic combat qualities.

One of the main innovations of the Willow project is a tri-band optical homing head. The search for targets is carried out in the near and middle infrared, as well as in the ultraviolet ranges. Such a GOS is more sensitive, and is also more likely to distinguish a real air target from a false one. The missile is protected from other modern counteraction systems.

A new solid-fuel engine with improved performance was also developed for Willow. With its help, the 9M336 missiles are capable of attacking a target at ranges up to 6 km and altitudes up to 3,5 km. Target speed - up to 400 m / s in oncoming courses or 320 m / s in overtaking.

Thus, MANPADS 9K333 - even without the use of communications and control - has obvious advantages over other domestic and foreign systems of its class. At the same time, the project “Verba” provides for the use of additional funds to ensure the integration of MANPADS into a single control system.

Management tools

In addition to military equipment, the Verba MANPADS batteries should include other instruments and devices that ensure the use of weapons. To simplify the production and operation, these components of the Willow were taken from the tactical link management system / Barnaul-T automated control system.

For the benefit of the Verba MANPADS battery, the small-sized 1L222 Garmon radar station is used in a portable version or on a self-propelled chassis. Such a station provides target detection at speeds up to 700 m / s at a distance of 40 km - far beyond the limits of the “Willow” area of responsibility.

Information from the Garmon radar or data from higher-level air defense units is processed by a control point, which can be performed in several forms. So, the 9С932-1 reconnaissance and control machine carries radars, data processing devices and target designation equipment on one chassis. Automation processes incoming information, determines goals and distributes them between MANPADS calculations. Over the air, data for firing is transmitted to the operators of the complexes.

Data from the ACS command post is displayed on the helmet mounted sighting device MANPADS in augmented reality mode. The operator learns about the direction to the target and the distance to it, after which he can perform preliminary guidance. Using data from higher-level systems allows the operator to prepare for an attack in advance, before the target appears in sight.

When the target enters the affected area, the MANPADS operator launches the rocket. Further, it all depends on the product 9M336, equipped with a modern high-range tri-band GOS. The architecture and parameters of the rocket make it possible to obtain a high probability of hitting a target of the type “airplane” or “helicopter”.

Characteristic Benefits

MANPADS "Verba" and the controls from the automation kit air defense / tactical link management system "Barnaul-T" can with high efficiency to solve the tasks of air defense in the near field. Significant advantages over previous domestic and foreign MANPADS are provided, which sharply reduces the likelihood of a successful air attack.

Devices from the Barnaul-T make it possible to fully incorporate the 9K333 Verba MANPADS into the general air defense system of the ground forces. The command post and anti-aircraft battery reconnaissance equipment can work independently or in conjunction with other air defense systems. On their own, Verba and Barnaul-T control a zone with a radius of 40 km. If necessary, they can receive air traffic data from other radars or higher command posts. Thus, the "Willow" become a full-fledged element of layered military air defense, complementing other air defense systems.

The benefits of Willow in the overall air defense control system are obvious. The battery command post is able to constantly monitor the air situation using third-party radars, including outside the area of responsibility of its own "Harmony". Battery automated control system processes incoming data and provides information on combat assets MANPADS 9K333. The latter have the task of defeating objects that have managed to break through other echelons of air defense.

With the independent operation of the anti-aircraft battery with all necessary means, the advantage is lost in the form of an early warning of threats. However, the characteristics of the 1L222 and 9С932-1 products are sufficient to maintain the necessary fighting qualities. The approaching aircraft will be timely detected and attacked.

In certain situations MANPADS "Verba" can be used without the means of the Barnaul-T system. In this case, the operator will have to independently monitor the airspace, notice the targets and attack them. Due to a number of objective factors, this method of application limits the capabilities of the portable complex and does not allow to fully use its potential. As a result, new control systems are developed and implemented that provide well-known advantages. Old techniques for the use of MANPADS are now considered only as a last resort.

Implementation issues

For several years, Verba man-portable air defense systems have been in mass production and are entering the troops. We are already talking about the complete replacement of older MANPADS in various units of the Russian army. In addition, there are export contracts for the supply of Verb.

Components of ACS "Barnaul-T" in the execution for the airborne. In the foreground is a machine with a reconnaissance and control module, followed by a control module. Photo by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation / mil.ru

In parallel, various means are being manufactured from the Barnaul-T system in various versions. First of all, different types of chassis are used, unified with the basic equipment of different types of troops. For example, reconnaissance and control vehicles based on the landing gear of an airborne armored personnel carrier are offered for the Airborne Forces.

Supplies of equipment and weapons lasts several years, and regularly reports about their progress. So, on August 1, the Izvestia publication, citing its source in the Ministry of Defense, reported that by the end of the summer the army would receive the latest products from the next brigade set of MANPADS and ASU. For what formations of the army are these supplies intended - not specified. It is indicated that “Willow” will replace in it products of the “Needle” family.

Current processes have several obvious consequences. First of all, there is an update of weapons and control systems, which in itself is useful for defense. In addition, new products can optimize the composition of military air defense and increase its combat effectiveness.

The result of this is the construction of a modern, advanced layered air defense forces, including a variety of means and systems. It is able to detect and hit targets at ranges from hundreds of meters to hundreds of kilometers. In such a system, portable air defense systems with modern ASUs play an important role, making a necessary contribution to the combat effectiveness of the troops.

The American firm Northrop Grumman has developed the Nemesis on-board optoelectronic countermeasures system (BASOP). It is designed for individual protection of aircraft and helicopters from surface-to-air and air-to-air missile systems with infrared seeker.
BASOP includes: a missile launch warning subsystem, equipped with optoelectronic sensors for their detection and tracking; information processing subsystem, providing a definition of the type and priority of defeat of UR; a set of countermeasures.
The main advantage of the system is that the countermeasures include a laser device that provides functional damage to the infrared seeker array photodetectors of promising SDs that are resistant to the effects of radiation of currently widely used infrared traps and modulated incoherent infrared radiation devices (cesium arc lamps). Guidance on the UR of the laser beam is carried out using a turret type device.
This system provides detection of the fact that the enemy launched missiles from any direction at a distance of up to 10 km (when using a set of six optoelectronic sensors operating from six optoelectronic sensors operating in the ultraviolet range of the spectrum) or in the viewing area 360 degrees in azimuth and 100 degrees in angle places (if there is a set of four sensors); accompaniment of UR with high accuracy (tenths of an angular degree) by cooling to a temperature of 77 K of a matrix photodetector measuring 256x256 sensitive elements from a compound of cadmium telluride and mercury; classification of the goal, and also selects the most effective means of counteraction and issues a command for its use.
The main component of the system is the AN / AAR-54 (V) missile launch warning subsystem, developed by the American firm Westinghouse.
Aircraft will be equipped with two BASOP - for the upper and lower hemispheres), and helicopters - one, only for the lower hemisphere.

I am certainly not a great specialist in this field, but in my opinion the mirror coating of glass photo lenses or heat sensors somehow reduce laser exposure to a minimum. The fog or cloudiness of the cloud will add complexity to the laser.

So you have written - will be equipped winked Therefore, the question arises, what kind of aircraft in reality received this economy? How much such a turret can generally be added to an existing aircraft (and even 6 sensors on the sides). We don’t talk about large UAVs (for small UAVs, I think this is not relevant - it’s unlikely that the Verba GOS captures them)

Design features of the Nemesis provide the possibility of its placement with low labor costs on military and transport aircraft and helicopters of various types without significant refinement of their structural elements.
The total value of contracts for the implementation of the Nemesis program is estimated at $ 500 million (the UK share exceeds 270 million), and the cost of one set of equipment can be about 2 million.

The maximum range and height of the defeat of the target MANPADS significantly depend on the speed of the target and the course parameter.
The higher the speed and the larger the parameter, the lower the maximum range and height of the lesion.
For a fixed target, the affected area is generally a hemisphere with a radius of 6.5 km.

Damn, what kind of trash is this "Harmony" radar - the first thing the enemy will do is to remotely blow all radio-emitting "Harmonies" to hell with the help of proto-radar missiles.

Since all MANPADS, including the Verba, are designed for use only in conditions of visibility in the optical range, the equipment for monitoring the airspace in the command vehicle must be passive optoelectronic, including a high-definition television channel and a thermal imaging channel.

Radar "Garmon" is an obvious budget pile.

The performance characteristics were not discussed, but they showed that our MANPADS consists of a tube with a rocket and a control panel, it can be thrown to the ground and nothing will break. And the same "Stinger" has a lot of "bells and whistles" that you can (even accidentally) break, not to mention falling to the ground! So I see that our “Willow” has become more and more like “Stinger” with its “bells and whistles”!

This is logical, their function is not to hold the blow, but to shoot down planes and helicopters

But in war everything happens, and it would be better if the blow were kept than not.
