Small-scale control system of small arms "Serval"

In the framework of the recent International Maritime Defense Show in St. Petersburg, a number of promising developments in Russian industry were shown. One of the most interesting novelties was the so-called. small-scale control system of small weapons (M-MSA) "Serval". This product is a complex that includes controls and remotely controlled combat modules for mounting various weapons.

One of the mounting options M-SUO "Serval"

Initiative development

The new M-SUO "Serval" was presented by Morinformsystem-Agat concern. The project is an initiative development of the plant "Izumrud", which is part of the concern.

As part of "Serval" there are several units designed for installation on different media. By changing the composition and number of elements of this system, you can equip cars of various types, armored vehicles or ships. The combat qualities of the M-SLA are determined by its own devices, but depend on the type of weapons installed.

It is alleged that M-CMS Serval has already been tested in the test site and then handed over for testing to one of the parts of the Pacific fleet. Checks were completed with very good results. So, during test firing a fire mission was set to defeat several targets. The Serval hit them with only three shots, while the shooter with the same weapons had to spend 20 rounds.

After the tests, the Pacific Fleet Command appealed to the Ministry of Defense with a proposal to adopt the Serval. In addition, the developer has received an export passport. This allows you to offer a new system to foreign customers.

Thus, by the time of the first public demonstration, the M-SUO Serval managed to go a certain way and get as close as possible to the stage of mass production and introduction into the troops.

Technical features

M-SUO "Serval" is a complex, which includes several tools for different purposes. First of all, it is the operator's remote control. The complex also includes a combat unit with a weapon and an optoelectronic device for observing and searching for targets. The minimum grade of the Serval includes separate facilities, while the maximum one includes the use of a console, an optical unit and four modules with weapons.

The optical-electronic device (OED) is built on the basis of a turntable and receives a swinging unit with optics. With its help, it is proposed to monitor the situation and search for targets, as well as generate data for firing. OEP is equipped with a gyrostabilizer and can be equipped with a video camera, thermal imager and laser range finder. It is curious that the layout of the EIA presented at IMDS-2019 differs markedly from the products appearing in promotional materials.

The combat module is designed as a support device with a rocking installation for weapons. The brochures show a simplified configuration module, while the exhibition layout received an additional cover with its own camera. Guidance weapons carried by electric drives with stabilization.

Combat module equipped with automatic

The EIA and the combat module can direct optics / weapons within the horizontal sector 160 ° wide to the right and left. Vertical guidance angles range from -20 ° to + 80 °. Perhaps automatic tracking of the selected target. Tracking speed - up to 60 degrees / sec.

The customer is offered a choice of several versions of the swinging part for the combat module, designed to work with different weapons. The Serval can be equipped with an AK-74 machine gun, a PC family machine gun, a cliff or a CPV product. Thus, M-SUO Serval is compatible with small arms with a caliber from 5,45 to 14,5 mm. Also declared the possibility of using weapons of foreign manufacture.

Serval's firing characteristics directly depend on the type of weapon installed. At the same time, the stabilizer and electronic control make it possible to increase the efficiency of the fire over the entire range of working ranges. Amount of ammunition is also determined by the characteristics of the weapons used.

Control is carried out with the help of an automated workplace operator. It is equipped with the necessary controls and a monitor for issuing information. One remote control can control up to four combat modules.

Each of the M-SUO Serval modules has a mass of not more than 50 kg. The control is carried out by the calculation of two people, and some of the tasks are solved by automation, which reduces the burden on the operators.

The task of "Serval" is called the fight against small ground, surface and air targets. Such a system can be used on different carriers and in different areas, which in a known way expands the range of tasks and the list of objects to be struck.

Benefits and potential

Many remotely controlled combat modules for various purposes have already been created in our country. M-SUO "Serval" from the concern "Morinformsystem-Agat" is similar to similar products, but has a number of characteristic differences. They highlight the new development against the background of other systems, and also give it a noticeable advantage over them. It is possible that "Serval" in the near future will be able to realize their potential and enter into service.

A characteristic feature and the main advantage of the Serval project is an integrated approach to architecture. The composition of the new M-MSA includes several tools for different purposes, which can be combined in accordance with the requirements and limitations of the carrier. Thus, on a lightweight platform, you can install a minimum set, while larger ones can carry all available systems.

Small-scale control system of small arms "Serval"
Optoelectronic device

When using the minimum set of M-SUO "Serval" is an analogue of the existing DBMS. In another configuration, this system receives significant advantages and is able to solve more complex tasks. For example, four combat modules with large-caliber machine guns can be installed around the perimeter of a boat or a small ship, which will provide effective all-round protection against enemy light craft at significant ranges.

Of particular interest is the compatibility of the combat module with machine guns. Such weapons are not typical of modern SDMs, and they prefer other types of weapons. In this regard, the "Serval" is a unique system, but the real possibilities in this configuration are limited. Ammunition in the form of 30 cartridges in a detachable magazine may be insufficient for most tasks. However, it cannot be excluded that such a variant of the complex will find application in practice.

Commercial prospects

The development organization claims that M-SUO Serval has been tested at test sites and in parts of the Pacific Fleet. Representatives of the Navy were satisfied with the new model and took the initiative to adopt it. This shows that the new model, despite the proactive nature of the development, arranged the military and meets their requirements.

If the proposal of the Pacific Fleet will be accepted for implementation, the Serval can go into series and become the regular armament of some combat units. Such systems can be used on various boats and small ships. You can also expect the introduction of elements of M-MSA on land equipment. However, one should not expect that this will happen very soon.

M-SUO performed by “Serval-E” received an export passport, which allows the developer to bring it to the international market. There are a lot of developments in the area of the development of a Dubrovnik Railway and there is fierce competition, but the new Russian model may have serious commercial potential. Unlike many other systems, Serval-E offers not a specific device with weapons and remote control, but a full-fledged complex of modular architecture, adapted to specific tasks and needs.

Thus, the small-sized Serval small-arms control system can be considered a promising universal means of solving fire problems with good commercial prospects. The current status of the project suggests that new messages about its development and success will appear in the very near future.

To cling to a "cheap" Kalash is a cool sighting system on a truck that requires a not frail power supply for the servos - this is already the "top" of military-technical thought, or they will come up with something for the PM fool

But actually, instead of AK, something more serious will look quite organic on the module ...

Actually, the article writes about this.
The Serval can be equipped with an AK-74 assault rifle, a PC family machine gun, a Utes product or a CPV.

        And one more thing:
One remote control can control up to four combat modules.

The skepticism about this system is understandable. I don’t know what prospects are mentioned at the end of the article, now there are already more advanced and / or finished samples of combat modules. Now Serval judging by the photo exists in the form of a single prototype.
A serious minus of this system is the separation of the detection module and the shooting module, which leads to a significant complication of alignment of the sight and axis of the optical module, and the corrections must be calculated and entered into the mathematics of the system for all horizontal and vertical pointing angles, and after maintenance (banal cleaning and lubrication) the machine / machine gun must be adjusted again - the hemorrhoids are still the same, and how to do it? to carry alignment stands with each complex is an so-so idea. (the combined sight and machine gun in one rotary platform are also adjusted, but there it is much easier and the technology is well developed)
If the modules are spaced apart, the error will also accumulate due to errors in the angle sensors, how will it be compensated and will it be? interesting too.
The article ends with a positive paragraph, although the concept is controversial and the system is still crude, I will also be positive - I hope the guys will succeed. The system still has pluses, although I see only one thing - the low cost of the fire module, the removal of the detection module separately, due to which its vitality is slightly increased, of course, can also be considered a plus, but with some stretch.

            Advertising slogan and complete nonsense!
Judging by the materials of the article, anyone who has even slightly touched the development of weapons and military equipment will say that this system is very, not even VERY! far "to the stage of mass production and implementation in the troops", although in our time everything is possible (which is very sad)

Regarding the layout of the system with separate combat modules and the detection / tracking module, the reason for choosing this layout is most likely related to the developer:
The new M-SUO Serval was presented by the Morinformsystem-Agat concern.

In short, the developers brought their usual ship-based ZAK "to the ground", having armed it instead of the AO-18 with an assault rifle / machine gun.

              17 July 2019 14: 07
This is understandable, but the fact is that if for ZAK some error in aiming is still permissible since the defeat is carried out by a field of shells (for which AO-18 shoots with a certain dispersion), then for a system with tasks that Serval must solve, aiming accuracy is a critical parameter. There is a solution to this problem, but I did not see it in the article.

In fact, this is not always a minus. In some cases, it will be more convenient to separate modules.
And regarding adjustment, isn’t it easier to use a laser target designator installed on the weapon, which in situations that you described or others to check with the sighting device of the complex? This can be manual or automatic, but there are fewer problems. And the precise adjustment is much less often.

Judging by the implementation of this system, the maximum that was used is a cold shooting cartridge.
I agree that the separation of modules is not always a minus, but still in most cases it is a minus.

Yes, I’d even take it into service with the police, when dispersing and calming violent demonstrators - you identify the organizers of bothering from above and process them precisely, you can shoot a dart with a sleeping pill, drive a gas, throw a net on top so that they do not run away, but you can come up with a lot of interesting things!

A dart with sleeping pills is very good, especially if it gets into the eye. Gazkom also likely the drone can take away a lot of ammunition for such firing and nets.
And when fired from a trauma, or even when a proletariat’s weapon hits, one can lose equipment worth several thousand dollars. What does the idea seem to me so-so, maybe this is not being applied, and not because all the fools are around?

                18 July 2019 16: 38
A javelin or a traumatic ammunition used directly by a policeman can get into the eye, a hand-fired grenade thrown by hand can hit a man’s collar and now what not to use all this? The drone can be knocked out of a slingshot (excellent slingshots are now sold) or pneumatically pumped, this does not mean that you should not abandon the method of neutralizing active provocateurs, which can stop the conflict in the bud.
And about the price - the drone is just the tip of the iceberg, because for its use it is necessary to allocate, train and train the drone calculations, create the infrastructure for this and introduce the police into the organizational structure, which will really cost a penny. Most likely they are not used to a greater extent not because of price, but because of organizational difficulties.

You are technically right. But please do not forget, this is not a war. :)
You know many things without me, but I will just remind you. Organization of riots is always a well-thought-out business, well, if you do not take some completely leftist speeches. Often they are developed by special services and it is not so easy to neutralize it. People are divided into small groups, each knows its task, and at the right moment the foremen give a signal to the crowd by the very active provocateurs whom you mentioned. Their total number is sufficient, and their teams know the task. Moreover, as the events in Hong Kong show, generally networked management is applied and the organization can be changed at any time. Through the networks of the near radius. And so on. And all this is not so scary, but until a situation envisaged by law is created (for example, a threat to life or any other), and even during it, a person has rights. You can't shoot him like that easily.
Not only that - a drone or any other moving system is perceived as an active opponent. What immediately escalates the situation, increases resistance and in many ways plays into the hands of demonstrators.
Indeed, such performances in the vast majority are organized not for the sake of any achievement, but for the purpose of demonstrating how the state will confront them.
Therefore, they most often try to use passive, easel means, if possible. I think the interaction with the riots shows good China in Hong Kong. Be sure to learn a lot from them. But now this is not about that.
In fact, the drone can only be used for discreetly taking a position and operating the camera. In all other cases, its use is either illegal or no longer playing a role.

No difference in Hong Kong or in the village of Porosyaty. In case of mass riots, you must first of all identify and neutralize the "commanders" and "field advisers" in the crowd, the very ones you are talking about. The drone is, first of all, an observation and ultra-precise system of destruction. About observation of roofs and other sniper points too. So - this is exactly a war, just the enemy works from behind cover and uses non-combatants as a weapon, his shield and disguise.
Illegality for specialists and especially the military is not registered, only the civil sector is regulated. Using non-lethal methods as a payload: ultrasound, networks, spot spraying, etc. such drones are better than assault groups and massive special equipment to neutralize the hotbeds of aggression and provocateurs. Their price in this context is no more important than physical and social consequences.

You cannot read and fantasize in vain. I wrote in detail above that the commanders and others are sitting at home. And they communicate through their representatives, who do not even need to shine, they transmit commands or some other things through the network, and organize themselves along it. Moreover, many groups each with their own tasks take part in the action. For example, they create a picture for the press, well, even if you take the main thing, everyone knows their roles, it will be somewhat less effective, but will not stop their work in any way. And to get into a few hundred thousandth crowd to detain someone there, to neutralize it would be equal to acceleration, with all the consequences.

                      Counterterrorist Terrorists? something familiar... :)))
And about the military this is also nonsense, excuse me for being blunt. Laws also apply to the military. But hostilities and martial law still need to be declared if you did not know not only in your head, but also in a country or region.

No, of course. I will reveal a secret, the mind works best. Not delusional consciousness, but the mind. I'm still waiting for your examples from the village of Piglets. From Hong Kong, I can give examples where the demonstrators were given the opportunity to take various actions. For example, break the glass and break into the state building, paint the walls there and show off in every way. And this turned out to be much cheaper than any impact, including not giving the demonstrators what they were seeking. And then work with everyone personally in the framework of the local Criminal Code. Without breaking the law.
PS Please, I beg you not to write me more of such tales. It’s not difficult for you to discuss and pour all this on someone else? I'm just not mentally prepared for discussions at the kindergarten level.

On the one hand, it is logical, but on the other, it all leads FROM what this construction implies. As I understand it, the main idea is simplicity, cheapness, dimensions, weight. With all the improvements, all this is instantly lost. Food is not necessarily tape, there are large-capacity stores, under a hundred like cartridges. For various tasks, this is enough above the roof. And for something more serious, more serious complexes are needed.

There are "Tigers" with the "Crossbow-DM" module, you won't have to lean out there:

It’s probably not worth it to start food under the roof for this type of weapon. This will greatly limit the scope: it will be necessary to cut through the roofs of transports, to actually fence a full-fledged tower with turret parts for the sake of a small caliber, to give part of the internal volumes. And here it is enough only to conduct the cables (control, power) inside. Now if the caliber is more, then yes:

        17 July 2019 14: 34
To reload both Serval-E and Crossbow-DM, you need to stick your carcass under fire or leave the dangerous sector (if possible, for example, on an undermined chassis in an ambush). Part of the internal volume for crew safety is rather a necessity, otherwise armor would not be needed for either tanks, self-propelled guns or armored personnel carriers. A tape store with the possibility of replacement without sticking out under fire is in any way better than for example regular for Korda with 50 rounds or an ordinary store for AK.
By caliber, the AGS in the load or a pair of Bumblebees on the side seems to me more useful.

Under fire, no one will reload, of course. And this car is not intended for a serious battle: it’s a patrol, reconnaissance. And where there are not enough 450 12,7-mm bullets, there are, by definition, cranks. Unless it was still possible to transplant a machine gun from the T-90MS to try:

Armor, unification ... Well, even without it, it weighs about 250 kg (the roof will not bend?) The AGS is better in its own separate module on another machine. Bumblebees ... not sure, disposable + it's dangerous to roll on yourself.

One amendment - a maximum of 150 ammunition on the same tank cord and even two boxes with ribbons (standard) of 50 each will not give 450+ shots:
Therefore, if there comes a situation that is usually called obscene - you have to crawl out onto the roof under fire.

Yes, I found it here in more detail:

Although technically combining 3 tapes into one and increasing the volume of the box is no problem.

The total mass of the BC and the drive. Cartridge 12,7 x 108 mm - 132-140 g (depending on the bullet) without even considering the tape and the box itself about - 59-63 kg. Total - adult weight on the side - additional problems. I propose to start the tape feed under the roof and pull the box inside the car. Minus - you need a place, plus - significantly increases the survival of operators.

And if so, the total weight is 250 kg, of which 21 kg (8,4%) on the BC. We add another 42 kg (300 rounds) and increase the total weight by 16,8%. Of course, the drives can not but affect, but they can be strengthened. It is possible to re-arrange the module itself, somewhere it is possible to facilitate ... If you set a task and give money for development, then there will be a solution. Recharge from under the armor is a complication of the structure and weakening of the roof (or the need for a tower of equivalent thickness). Actually, it will be well maybe a couple of times during the life of the machine. You can implement:
                  1. The whole BC in one tape is fed to a machine gun in an armored casing (one tape for 150 is not an option - there is no way to open a machine gun and refuel the end of each new tape) and hangs under the roof. The BC now does not press on the support from the side, but it will have to be rotated horizontally anyway (and the mass has not disappeared), so the problem of horizontal drives will remain. I also suspect the problematic uniform delivery of cartridges at different angles of vertical aiming (especially extremely large). Well, you still have to disfigure the roof under the armored casing.
                  2. BC in the standard form remains at the barrel, and the whole module will have to be sewn up with armor and make a normal tower. But now from the inside, even under fire, you can safely change the box, pull out the end of the tape, open the machine gun, refuel the tape, cock ... It will not work much less:

It may of course be better, but even more complicated and expensive.

The armored housing for feeding the tape is also flexible. Provides declared vertical angles of up to 80 degrees. Bring it under the roof through the mounting plate of the module and already under the roof into the mount under standard boxes, which can be changed simply by coupling the tapes in turn. Or immediately start the tape from laying (from the floor to the module it will hardly be twisted more than 360 degrees). Harder, but not harder than giving birth and raising soldiers. And by the way, the greatest number of losses just falls on the cases that happen 2-3 times over the entire combat path of equipment.

Compactness and capabilities for different platforms - not the main thing. The remote module is designed so that the operator of the weapon remains protected, and in this case he will have to recharge the module with a risk to his life. I have already mentioned not enough BC for stationary points.

Naturally, the main point of any DBM (I do not like this abbreviation) is to control the fire from the shelter. Here I can not disagree. But further categorically disagree. Read about managed modules, especially similar small designs. One of the most important aspects of the design is the absence of elements or their minimum in the reserved space.
The point is that the DBMS, primarily small ones, do not require serious alteration of the medium.
Regarding "Compactness and possibilities for different platforms are not the main thing." This is not so. It is clear, however, that a module with the ability to use hand weapons will be installed not on a tank, but on a light vehicle. Where is compactness, dimensions come first, otherwise it simply cannot be installed. Such a module, even in principle, will not have any commercial attractiveness if it cannot be installed on the roof. This is not a heavy module for fighting tanks, which weighs under 4 tons and the possibility of its installation is calculated in advance for the equipment. These small modules are designed to be installed on almost any equipment that can support its weight and recoil. This cannot be not basic, this is generally their whole meaning of existence.

You stuck on one idea. And then there is a recharge or something else. here is a module that can be put almost at the checkpoint, in the back of even a civilian car, perhaps even without much preparation for this. To invest in it is not some complicated device, but the same AK as everyone else around and it will shoot, moreover, as they say more efficiently than a person. What is the recharge? if necessary, you can install a more capacious store, you can tape feed. This is the second thing, because it can be implemented in general on the spot.

What other stationary points? why for them a system with AK, for them it will be much more convenient and efficient to use PCT, for example. Or any other easel product that already has all the capabilities initially.

In general, a dispute between two deaf people about a bathhouse. The module for easy shooting - yes, it makes sense to do one. But look at Serval - a block with guidance separately and will not fit into the roof of the same Tiger at once. And everything that is larger than 14,5 mm is already quite heavy and limited by this external BC on the module.
By the way, it suddenly came to mind: for a Mirnyk in the fleet, such a module combined with firebreaks would allow watering pirates without threatening the crew.

I agree with almost everything. But it seems to me that the separate also has its advantages. They can be installed in different places on the equipment, for greater secrecy, if not installed on the equipment, it is even more convenient, by the way, one fire monitoring and control module can serve several rifle ones. But for some typical applications, everything in one module is certainly preferable.

I read opinions on this system, installing a simple machine is really not serious. In fact, honestly and seriously, the most optimal thing is something like the good old Maxim machine gun with water cooling, which should be forced to add a pump with a radiator and a fan from the car, put a box of ammunition supply system for 500 shots ... and there really will be happiness, will be able to work in long bursts without the threat of barrel overheating.

"What are the fools manufacturers", and the installation of a simple machine from a great mind. What the developer actually said "Such systems can be used on various boats and small ships.", I will see how they will reload on such ships during a full turn, and the main use of this weapon is as an anti-sabotage and anti-terrorist purpose, try to hit a fast maneuvering a high-speed target, and for an air target, it will not be bad to create a high density of fire .. "What are the fools of the manufacturers, they did not think to put water cooling and a fan from the car.", a purely constructional proposal, which will help to solve the overheating of the barrel from the common technical elements available by and large in every auto parts store. This is from the series for which Shilka is loved, for the density of fire provided by forced-cooled barrels.

I don’t know, you write that you read the comments.
This can be not only an automatic weapon, but any small arms and the scheme itself is interesting in that the weapons that are here and now can be used. By the way, the article says so.
"The customer is offered a choice of several variants of the swinging part for the combat module, designed to work with different weapons. The Serval can be equipped with an AK-74 assault rifle, a machine gun of the PK family, the Utes or KPV product. Thus, M-SUO Serval compatible with small arms with a caliber of 5,45 to 14,5 mm. "
What did the PC not please you or something more serious? If the task requires it. Modules designed initially with heavy weapons, with special capabilities, but their dimensions and mass are many times greater. Have you definitely read the article? Everything is painted there. That the weight of each part of the module does not exceed 50 kg. So it can be transported by a person to the place of use.

"Why didn't the PC please you, or something more serious", how many PCs can keep a high rate of fire in long bursts, after which shot from heating the barrel can you light a cigarette and wait until it cools down?

So name some other DBM that can be carried and weighed in the same way. And also due to its characteristics it can be installed even on small vessels.

Calculated barrel change after 500 shots. As you would like - 500 rounds in the tape. Practical rate of fire of 250 rounds per minute.
              What is wrong?
As it is written in the article "The organization-developer claims that the M-LMS" Serval "was tested at proving grounds and in parts of the Pacific Fleet. The representatives of the Navy were satisfied with the new model and came up with the initiative to put it into service. This shows that the new model, despite the proactive nature of the development, it suited the military and meets their requirements. "
The truth is not indicated in what configuration. But again, it turns out that you are an opponent to developers and potential customers. Only they rely on their trials, and you on what?

What have you refuted by this? Do you have any calculations or calculations about the need for such a system to produce a large practical rate of fire?
For relatively accurate shooting, this is completely unnecessary. And in order to cover the area, multi-barrel systems have long been used.
